Damn what a game, from point of losing the coming back. This was the art of war right here. When you are about to lose, capture water, use siege ships, when you lose fire gaints to medusa, spam valkerys. Those valkerys came in clutch at the last moment.
This is one of the best strategic games I have ever seen. The raids, the fights, the pathblocking from both sides. You're absolutely right about The Unknown map to be included in the map pool the players get to choose. It really spices things up and sets the match up for some spicy strategies.
What a great game! Thanks Boit and everyone else involved. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. It was such a smart move to come back and hit the water like he did. Sun Tzu is the man.
This is the first time I’ve seen sons of slepnir being used in a very effective way at a high level. Crazy. PS. Did u know sons of slepnir affects attacks on Sentinels ?
That was Epic! I always thought it was impossible to stop late stage greek playing norse on the back foot. Since you are loosing your buildings and you need your army to either fight or build more buildings. I would have thrown the towel once the heliopolis were at my town center. This was a case of Suntzu JUST NOT GIVING UP. He kept choosing avenues he could win. Hitting the water at that time was genius! Incredible will.
Wouldn't be a BoIt commentary without a jab at the Forest Fire use haha! Stellar play from SunTzu especially, the late game Valkyries were putting in work. Aurora Borealis!? At this time of year, at this time of day, in this part of the country, localized entirely within your AoM match!?
You actually do need to make some towers since those ships die nearly instantly to them if they get in range. Therefore, they need to siege down the towers before they can siege the town center, which gives you the time to make hammer ships from multiple docks to fend off the attack and keep the tc up. The mistake here was not making hammer ships in addition to the tower.
AoM was the first RTS I ever played, love it to death but these days I've enjoyed watching high level SC2 more in general just because of the faster pace, smaller scale of maps and economies, and more micro potential making it feel more intense sometimes. But this game to me highlights the exciting aspects of Age games. Massive field and a lot more potential for decisive outmaneuvering, plus the more emphasis on pushing with buildings and contesting resources in neutral ground as opposed to SC minerals and gas. Awesome game, awesome casting, love to see it.
Honestly, SC2 got me into competitive content creation and I live for these sorts of games. I want to go around and cast a bunch of other RTS games for funsies, I think I'll give it a go in the coming weeks. ;)
@@BoitTV Would enjoy watching that for sure. While I've got you here I'll say thanks for your dedication to covering this game. My brother and I have loved AoM since we saw it randomly in some store in like 2008, and your videos have been really enjoyable to watch together and have even inspired us to get back into the game a little even though we're pretty bad lol. Not sure it would have happened without stumbling onto your channel. Keep it up
Seeing top player pick and win with Thor makes me wonder: is Thor meta now ? Would love it if yes, this God is really fun to watch games of, especially as a Norse fan.
You can certainly play thor and be competitive. With his recent buff to the gold mine he can get to the heroic age fairly reliably (on voobly). It is very difficult to play well with him though and matchups like hades and zeus are still not great
I would think a Thor flaming weapons ragnarok would be OP. Even better than frost because you would just shred. But you'd have to wait until you got to mythic and save them both. I guess the good thing about frost is it saves you if you're in a bad situation.
@@AchillesWrath1 i think that is a pretty much all in condition. Skady has excellent upgrades for lategame, as does tyr. Flaming weapons can be deadly in some matchups but hermes or skady can easily counter that, or someone who has a very good defensive setup
Marianoo should've won this game, but made a few missteps that were so easily avoidable: - After rushing his archer ships, he did not sneak docks everywhere to grab the fish. Can be done after fully winning water as well, but he only made 3 more fish ships. - Post-ragnarok, he never even attempted to build Sun-Tzu's third (middle) tc. Instead of building a third fortress, this would've given him much more map control and pop advantage. - Ignoring the oxy ship, never making hammer ships to stop it and then building oxys of his own to finish the docks/tc on the other side. Big one. - Not making a granary when his tc went down, making him lose all those farms. combined with not making hammer ships when having the pop. - As mentioned, not making medusa's early enough. - Not making 80% myrmidons (aq) with 20% toxotes (manually rebuilding when they die). Sons of sleipnir is SO strong against toxotes that it is more efficient to fight myrm vs throwing axemen at full pop than archers against those cav. With bellerophon jumping in the middle of those TA continusouly and drawing their fire, they die very very very fast to upgraded myrms. Or walk a helepolis in the middle of them to tank, or heracles will do as well. Once you have the res to upgrade hippikon, you could keep 3-4 hips in your army to draw their fire as well. Without the +20% dmg from heph tech since he went hera this is a bit weaker, but still very strong. Obviously the raiders would melt to this in a similar way the toxotes did to raiders. - Combined with the above: forgetting to make heroic age myth units after 3 medusa to further deal with throwing axemen. A hydra will quickly get enough heads to one-hit them every other second. Manticore splash and general strength crushes them. This further forces hersir, which are such weak units lategame for non-loki. Note: Jarls can get medusa'd, so they dont really work unless they are really massed, at which point there already are too few TA and myrms wreck those jarls. Also, remember that hera upgrades boost all myth units hp/attack, making them much better for lategame use. - Late farm upgrades. - Missed potential: Hitting mythic on a map like this earlier also allows you to make just two oxy juggernauts to kill the water-range tc followed by all the docks (and likely the market) when the norse cannot build hammer ships due to being way over pop limit from the rag. - Similar to the above: not making a transport ship to hide gold miners in from raids, since all gold mines were pretty much aroudn the water edge. However, he found a sneak so it is kinda moot. - Going hera post-post-post rag. At this point, with the way his eco was going, forge of olympus + plenty vault would've been so so so much better. While the initial fire giants would still be a bit of a pain, since he did not make medusa early it would've gone the same against them. And once their mass is gone, having a perpetual belle + heracles on the field makes them irrelevant. Though the way he also cast it almost makes me think he thought Sun-Tzu would just resign when he hit mythic and cast it. I've gone hera myself when I was sure of a win and just wanted him to click resign. Given how it was 140/140 vs like 70/120 pop, that might've been his mindset. But somehow sun-tzu climbed back. On Sun-tzu's end: - Casting rag at 85/140 pop. It would've been better to garrison all vills in his tcs, queue units into longhouses, to get as many regular units out before he HAD to rag. a 212/140 rag will almost always be survived on maps like this. - Having a majority of his rag idle, sending 1/3 in to fight marianooo's army near his base. This further lowered his pop so much that it was guaranteed that marianoo would survive the rag. - As mentioned, not having enough longhouses in the post-rag stages. All this is not to say that both players did not play very well - they did - and some of those things can be forgotten under pressure. But those were the things that got me saying 'aiii' when I saw them.
Great game, great commentator (i dont know if thats the word, sry my english isnt that technically good), i stand for mariano cause he is argentinian (from a fellow argentinian lol) but damn boy, sun tzu is a beast. Thanks for the content Boit!! and thanks for amazing game to the players!
love the stream of aom content :D you should maybe consider putting your twitch link in the description to make it easier for us to find your channel on twitch :)
Where can i download the mod to make my screen look like this? Where the bottom 1/4 of it is usable and visible around the commands and controls and stuff.
at 47:00 im telling all of you noobs this ❗️❗️❗️❗️ when the map is soo chaos like in this map than you cant make a long trading route. just make a safe one. also dont mine gold. your villager just keep dying and you lose idle time
Even if mariano used only myrmidon as infantry he could win easily. For late game and if u are someone who are late to go into last age u should use plenty power and other stuff.
Mariano biggest mistake was no eco upgrades very late eco upgrades massing hoplites again and again not getting upgrades Athena upgrades man saving all those favor just makes ya think going hepthusus forge of olympos and champion hoplites would be gg
why Thor avoids fighting ships in the early minutes of the game, zeus dock is far away, ships need a lot to come, of course Thor will lose ships...such a noob playing
mariano throwing away the game at 45:00 - 50:00 minute. and not building tc. suntzu is playing cunning. always attacking goldmines and sending 1 ship to attack tc. also mariano bad choice hera and thtowing away lighting storm.
@dansil92 It wouldnt be fair. they lose and start crying bringing excuses like the sun was shining in my eye. 1vs1 and you lose against me i normally i play against 2 or more. so im satisfied
