In the meantime, we upgraded the bike with a 3000Watt motor and put on a 72Volt battery. Check out the new video. :) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mPOsyUhzgmE.html
Hello, I bought the same bike last week and i love it.. I'm a girl lol But i want to upgrade for a better Rear or mid 1000W or 1500w (Simple upgrade for a noob lol) Sorry for this question, but what motor fix this wheel? is this 20 inch ? or maybe i'll put a mid motor like your....(seen easy) , i'm looking one on amazon mid Banfang, but i see after the 1500w, i see t42, t52, t46, ect what that mean? .... so i can choose the right one.. Sorry my noob question. I will appreciated if you respond.. THANK YOU AND I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS.
Hey there, first of all congrats to the new bike! :) No worries about the question, you need to start somewhere. To your first question, I would go with a bafang kit. It's easy to install and it looks very clean. Another advantage is that the middrive motors are lighter than the hub motors and the controller is already hidden in the motor too. Don't forget that you will need a battery too. Luna Cycle has great batteries. The numbers with the t's mean the number of the teeth on the sprocket. In my case, I do have a 36 teeth on my front sprocket and 16 teeth on the rear. I would go with the 42 teeth and 100mm bottom bracket version (amzn.to/2XeiIri) in your case since the 36 teeth sprocket is an aftermarket one that you can change later.
@@johnnypuetz Thank you so much for your kind and details respond!! You are the best.. That's what i thought too..the middrive look easy and clean compare to the rear, taking off the tired and all that lol. I'll give it a try!! thanks again.
@@johnnypuetz Hi! is me again :) , I'm wondering what's the size for the Bottom Bracket on the z1 ? just to make sure the mid motor fit on it like your? haha, (I think i'm buying the BAFANG BBSHD MID DRIVE), and i need to choose the size before order, THANK YOU!!
@@alerumba Hey! You will need a 100mm bottom bracket size. If you are ending up buying the BAFANG, please use my affiliate link to support me! :) (amzn.to/2XeiIri). You can pick just the motor or you can also order the kit with a battery. ..Select the 100mm bottom bracket version and like I said before. I would go with the 42teeth sprocket version.
Love this build and it’s exactly where I’m going with mine. I purchased a ZG this week and ordered my BBSHD a couple of days ago. I did join a few forums for some help / advice however I’ve received a lot of negativity by people saying I’ve bought the wrong bike, I’m defeating the point of a mid drive motor, I should’ve bought the model up, BBSHD doesn’t work on single speed etc etc……
just to answer ur problem regarding the controller cutting off when u give beans to both motors is because the luna batteries are designed with a feature call low voltage cut off, so in order to bypass that u either need to lower ur output of controller amps of bbshd, u can do that by connecting ur bbshd with luna provided usb dongle and u can set how much amps bbshd outputs, or u can power the 2 motors with 2 seperate 52v batteries but the batteries need to be of same specs..enjoy...
Running just a bafang BBSHD 52v bat 42-11 sprocket I can hit 34mph of flat ground. When you spin the BBSHD backwards it becomes a generator. The clicking is called cogging. I have lights hard wired into my electrical system when I back the bike up the lights come on with the battery power off and the light switch on. Awesome dual motor set up though. Good thing you have the hub motor to start off since the BBSHD likes high revolutions. To go faster that rear cog will need to be smaller or the front cog to be bigger. I figure your gear ratio is around 2.40 ish as is. If you could put a 11 tooth cog on the back it would break 30mph. Be like 4.36 gear ratio. You would want to use hub motor to 20 then engage the warp drive.
NYangryguy thanks for the detailed comment!! Currently I am running a Cyclone 3000w and I removed the hub motor with a standard mountain bike hub. The bike is now a little bit stronger than the dual motor setup. Most improvement is the weight. The single motor setup saves a few pounds. My limiting factor is now the battery. ..I am working on a new video for the new Super73 3000watt build. Is coming up soon! :)
Hi bud, just came across your video and was wondering if u charge to install extra battery for the z1. Want to purchase it but the range is what’s stopping me.
What I liked most about that bike when I saw it was the fat tires on it and that empty frame. Hell you could throw a thumper motor in there like they do in the hood 😂
Surely the hub motor is made redundant by the bbshd. Better to swap the rear hub for a geared or standard hub and just use the bbshd and save the weight.
love this video. im gon a do this with the Hyper Radster in silver because even though its smaller battery and motor, it has front suspension and rear derailleur.
Hi nice ebike and video, appreciate if you can provide the mm size of the bottom bracket or at least the bafang/mid drive size used for this build? Thanks!
Hello, I just came across your channel and loved your channel!! If you can please answer me, I went to lunacycle to buy this same mid motor. but in the options i need to choose " the Bottom Bracket Size * 68mm-73mm (Standard) or 120mm (Extra Fat) they only gave me those 2 options..any of those will work? Which one did you have in this mod? I will greatly appreciated if you tell me.. Thank you!!
Hey, you will need a 100mm bottom bracket size. Neither the 68mm-73mm nor the 120mm will work. You can order the motor here: 42T - 100mm & 52V 14Ah Downtube Battery (amzn.to/2XeiIri)
@@johnnypuetz Thank you for your replied. Yes I noticed that motor on amazon , but i want to buy the Luna motor 1500w you have in this mod.. How did you get it fit? if they only sell 68mm-73mm and 120mm . it doesn't show 100mm so i can choose..... did you mailed them? Thank you for the help.
proxt11 you need the 100mm version, that’s what I bought. You can reach out to Luna and ask them why they don’t offer this size anymore or when it’s available again.
Specs 150mm dropout rear wheel 138mm dropout front wheel 36t front sprocket 16t rear sprocket 100mm bottom bracket size I think the wheel axles are 10mm. Not 100% sure
Greate job Johny, im planing to do mid motor swap in SG model, can I stay with oryginal rear wheel that have shifting, if I just turn rear engine off from the bike?
Does the Super 73 have to be turned on while you charge it? Mine had yellow light after full night of charging and it did not accelerate for more than 2 seconds....
Michael Bills sorry to hear buddy.. I don’t have any issues. But I don’t use any original components anymore. Motor, batterie and controller are aftermarket.
How about wiring the battery, that the bike included, with a matching third party battery in series for higher voltage or in parralel for better range?
Jacob Reuss you will risk to burn the moto because it’s not made for way higher voltage. Also you need to switch the controller because it won’t be able to handle it either. Second battery with same specs for more range is doable.
@@johnnypuetz or just get the usb cable to program the BBSHD. Or even consider an HMI with bluetooth/phone app (www.bafang-e.com/en/components/component/hmi/dp-e12uart.html)
Great video & very well done Johnny! Looks like we just found us some serious modification competition - We just subscribed. Have you thought about fitting a third battery yet & do you have any other plans for more mods to the bike? Best wishes from the UK! (We are not an official dealer)
Sam I Am hey Sam, thanks for reaching out! The video itself shows almost all steps. Not really in detail, otherwise it would be way too long. But let me know if you have a specific question!
Johnny, I was wondering if you could help me? I bought the brakes you suggested and tried to install them but they won’t adjust properly. I kept the same rotors on that came on the bike originally. Is there any extra step ? What am I doing wrong lol?? I can’t seem to make it work ... Any suggestions ?
Edgar Candelas hmm.. I didn’t have any problems. What do you mean with they don’t adjust properly? ..this is how I adjust them: loosen the screws on the brake caliber (4 of them). Spin the tire and break. Hold the break and tighten the bolts at the same time. That works fine with booth tires (front and rear). The tires spins free and the brakes work great. ..let me know if that helped or if you have an other issue
what an awesome video. I was looking at the coast cycles and also the Luna cycles "like the S73". I can build easily battery packs and can assemble DIY stuff. What do you recommend me to do? buy the Z1 like you did and over power it ?
@@E-sk8Fr Because of a few things. It comes with a motor and battery that is at least comparable with the S73 S1 and comes with the same price tag. But the key for me are 2 things, it is 30% lighter and that is a game changer! I need to carry my bike 3 floors and this makes things way easier. 2nd argument is the size of the bike and the wheels. The Zooz bikes have bigger wheels with great moped tires for better performance. ..But at then end it comes down to the questions what you want, need or prefer.
I’m having bad luck with this z1. The shipment almost got delayed. The tube valve got rip in half for no reason before I even had a chance riding it. Are these tub really that poorly made?now I can’t ride with my friends this weekend.
I did the same hack for dual battery as well...but I used a 36v 20ah battery instead. My “extra” battery does the job so well (mileage, duration, speed) that I never use the original battery anymore😏. And honestly, since I’ve learned about batteries and watts and amp-hours...I gotta tell ya - the original battery for the Z1 is pretty anemic at 36v 11.4ah (but again you don’t know what you don’t know🤷🏾♂️)... Question tho: for the money you spent (+ $2,000) and for the advantages u accomplished...why didn’t you just purchase a new bike? Curious... Great video. /Bklyn👑
Robert Motión I recommend to upgrade to 52volt. It’s a big jump and you will feel the difference. This built costs about $2400 including necessary tools and the bike itself. This is still cheaper than the OG model, faster and has more power. Check out the the 3000w built. This is in the same price range but does 44mph on flat ground.
johnnypuetz good stuff. Would a 52v battery and controller work on the 500w Super73 Z1 motor though? The only other hesitation I have is that...at that speed seems like you definitely would want or need tire suspension, no? That’s my only hesitation. I clocked 36mph on my Super73 today literally and you definitely can tell you ain’t moving slow😏 /Bklyn👑
I will do that in the next video. I already can tell you that the bike goes 30mph on the straight and I did already 35mph+ downhill. More details soon! :)
Nice work. Sweet video! That's how these wimpy cheap bikes should come stock. In the end, with the adjustments what was your top speed? We are also running 52volts but are geared way down in order to tow a heavy trailer up steep hills...oh and pop wheelies!!!
Pure Water Window Cleaning I can pop wheelies with the 48t sprocket too. Ends up to be more smoother to balance the wheelie in the sweet spot. Top-speed is 29mph with the 48t and 25mph with a 36t.
@@johnnypuetz Thanks, i ended up doing the same local bike shop. Now the only other issue i am having is what axle did you use? I have the same hub, but i noticed that the axle on the original motor was slightly flattened. Any tips on where i can find a similar axle? Or should i just round out the drop outs?
Hey i am from The Bronx and just ordered one The Original, would love to meet up this summer for a ride around. GREAT video here. What Boro are you in?
Brian D Howard that wasn’t an option.. I reached out to Luna if I can purchase the ludacris controller. But they don’t sell it separate. You only get it with their bikes.
@@johnnypuetz it's says right on there page, hot rod tune.. 250.00 upgrade...Am I missing something?? There is 2 different tunes 1- the hot rod tune ( for off road use only on any bbshd ordered ) 2- the Ludacris tune.( Only offered on Luna bikes)
@@johnnypuetz your correct. I went back and double check.. the 1000 watts should get you well over 30.. I have a BBS02 and hit 27-28mph all day.. I just got a Z myself and will be doing hydraulic brakes, a headlight, and a second battery. Nice install of the BBSHD.. .. If I was you I'd get the program cable and play with the settings. Have you thought about getting ride of the hub motor, it may be causing some resistance.. Just wondering..
Make your own ludicrous controller you’d need to remove the silicon that fills the controller body(potting) , desolder the shunt resistor and replace with a different value. You’d also want a USB cable from eBay to program your motor
johnnypuetz nice man I don’t think I’d get away with super73 or cyclone in my area, BSHD looks fairly stock without external aluminium controller boxes so don’t get many headturns.
PS4 Custom Gamer I extended the wire harness and the controller sits under the seat. It looks not too bad, besides of the 72v battery. :D ..I did a second video about the build. Check it out if you wanna see how it looks like.
johnnypuetz I did it on the z1 exactly like this video what sprocket do you have on this video and what controller do you recommend ? Thanks for the reply
I was running the original controller, built into the motor housing.. you did something wrong. The original motor brings the bike up to 21mph along already.. the bafang is way stronger. I don’t rember the gearing of this build
haha. Yes, I was playing with the idea. But I put a 3kw mid-drive motor on it. Here the video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mPOsyUhzgmE.html I don't find a bigger hub motor that fits in the frame without widen the dropout. Let me know if you know a hub motor that fits.
Hello Johnny :) At first, nice vidéo. I am here too because I will soon receive mine too ... I can't wait it !! I just wanted to know, if there is no way to remove the speed limit without changing the motor and battery ? And after, as Alerumba, I want to upgrade it just to have like 30 miles speed. I do not need a moto, but something no very expensive in order to go faster. As you recommend her, you think the best is "42 teeth and 100mm bottom bracket version" ? Thank you in advance if you take time to read me. Have a good day.
Derelle Charles you can get almost 30mph out of the original motor, but you need to unlock the limiter. There is an option to cut the white cable and I know a couple guys doing it. But please do some research and I take no responsibility if you have problems afterwards. Let me know if the mod works for you
@@johnnypuetz Hello. Yeah I understand a lot about responsability, and it is my proper decision for this. I just want to unlock this bike when I need it, like in town I don't need it. About the white cable I never found a video about it. I think this is cable inside the controller ? I just need to cut it ?But this will use more the battery ? Do you think is this good to add another baterry too with my future super 73 ? Thank you for answer me by the way ;) Have a good day
I don't have them connected to the motor. I do want it to be able to brake and control the acceleration at the same time. ..it's easier to control wheelies.
johnnypuetz ahhh gotchu i noticed that i can get more power if i do not connect my brakes to the motor. Thanks man I’ll get the bafang kit once i get enough money
@@wreckitralph2037 My current build has the Cyclone 3000w motor from Luna Cycle. This is a cheaper alternative, that can handle more power out of the box. ..I just finished my build and will do a video about this build soon.
Anyone tried cutting white wire in controller yet? I’m in UK so power restricted to 250w. Would like to upgrade to bafang bbshd and twist throttle - currently only have power assist, no thumb throttle. No idea if this is all possible on EU version but continuing to research it. Tempted to cut white wire but haven’t seen any proof it works so a bit nervous!
Donna Clack you are welcome buddy! I would just go for it. You can always solid then cable together again. :) please let us know what you are ended up doing! I know that the US and EU bikes because ebike rules are different. But I’m pretty sure that the throttle only hack isn’t too complicated either. Keep us posted!
johnnypuetz I may just add another battery to improve range (not to run parallel), snip white wire and add a throttle. Do you have a link or can you remember which throttle you used please? Not sure if I need to upgrade motor in order to use different throttle or whether I can just replace the one it came with (pedal assist only as EU version so I have no throttle at all currently). Thanks for any help - as the EU Super73 has only recently launched we’re all newbies over here lol
Connector is different on EU pedal assist unit on handlebars. It’s green and 5 pin so not compatible with any throttles that I can find online. Think I’d have to run a new compatible wire from controller in order to do it - even then not sure it would work. May have to wait a while and see if any further mods/hacks come up
Jun Max I customized my bike again. Now with a 3000w and 72v battery. I never did a full distance test but I would assume that I can go 20miles if I don’t ride too aggressive
Art Museum nope, 29mph. But we are working on a faster version already. :) ..if you go bigger on the front sprocket (+48t), you will go faster than 30mph with the BBSHD setup
Did you build a new rear wheel or did you just use the original with the hub motor in it? If you just kept the original be careful as the BBSHD will shred that thing to bits. The reason being is that the freewheel is attached to the hub motor access plate and secured by 6 small screws. Because it is a hub motor and the access plate is only designed to handle the torque from pedaling it will explode on you like it did on one of our bikes... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bR4TjQqR1bo.html
Thanks for the advice. I already swapped the moto to a 3000w mid drive and I build a new rear wheel without the heavy hub motor. Video is coming soon! :)
