To allow for large bosses in games on Nintendo, games used the background layer to move it around rather than a series of sprites (which capped out at 5 per scanline I believe) and just programmed collision detection that moved with the background. (Basically if you came up to a single-color background, a large boss could be nearby at any time. :P) Another part of the background layer with some chips was to allow it to split it into two parts, one for the background that you're already walking on and one to move the split 'boss' background around. Now if that part of the chip malfunctions yet leaves the rest of the instructions intact, I imagine that'd make some fun glitches like this. Might be hard to duplicate this exactly.
alex_9000 I have seen this exact glitch in the yellow devil fight, but I can't remember where again. Was bullshit though with the boss being invisible.

My cousin has an absolutely wrecked copy of Street Fighter 2 Champion Edition for the Sega Mega Drive, every time you turned it on you could only play it for about 10 mins before a load of what looked like hexadecimal code came on the screen still in the game font which could be edited with the joypad. All we could really get it to do was change some of the pallet colours or make sprites invisible. good times.
The Pork Wizard reminds me of one of those games I had for PS2, I think it was snk vs capcom 2, and you could edit the colours of every sprite to whatever you wanted. So you could say make ryu's gi bright blue instead of white, or whatever
Hey the Fireball weapon isn't bad in this game (original Contra it is), but for overall power it's right up there, just behind the Laser. You can hold down the button and charge it up, and release a super big fireball, works great on bosses (if you have patience).
I'm not in a situation to test this myself, but I believe that this can be replicated by lifting pin 13 of the MMC3B chip inside the cartridge. I would not be surprised if a dry solder joint wore out, causing this particular bug...
When i was a kid and had a famiclone the ones with yellow cartridges usually. I had this multicart from 90' And when playing Mario 1 there, and physicaly shaking the inserted cartridge in the system, it would glitch,corrupt the game in a weird way... Often it was VERY playable, instead of showing number of lives, it had weird graphical icons, and had new levels, bowsers early on, new block placements, and many other things, it was addicting af to do xD idk how that worked, but it did in a very playable way most of the time...
4:20 like James says this happens in every Super-C. Happened to me all the time as a child. It’s from being in the ground and often happened when you land into the corner of the ground. I’ve never seen it happen from being in the ground and hen having the scroll instantiate it though!
James has this distinctive face when he says "Fuck"... I just love this face. It's filled with frustration anger and madness and somehow it's so relieving to watch.

It would still be worth a try to dump it. One of the address lines could be shorted or corroded so that it would still dump the garbage code. It may have something to do with the mapper. I'm sure this could be reproduced via emulation regardless
Haha, I can relate to Mike here. Going back to early 2000's I put my wallet in a "safe place" only to remember where I put it 3 years later. That sucked cancelling credit cards, bank card, losing a few hundred dollars for three years. The upside, when I found it I got the $260 back originally lost which made me laugh and feel good at the same time.
I was a pretty competent gamer as a kid. I used to get thru Contra no problem. Then Super C came out. I rented it. But for some reason I couldn't even pass level 1. After seeing these glitches I feel like that was the issue I had. Especially that glitch where you die from touching the edge of a step or cliff. Makes a lot of sense 28 years later lol!
I remember this game, I played it since I was young, but I don't have a problem with it, but sometimes it gets glitchy when the game froze. They should called it "Super C: The F***ed Up Edition". I played a lot of NES games the years, but when one of the cartridge connectors are dirty, the game glitches and completely crashed while I was in the middle of playing a game. I got frustrated. The problem with my original NES is the screen blinks and not loading the game. I blow the connector and tried so many times and I got frustrated too. That happened a long time ago.
Invisible bosses sure does make it harder for anyone. I'm pretty that mysterious cartilage glitch probably effects the map sprites than just the game play.
I just remember that story of James having a wound in his finger and it starting bleeding again while he's playing and that just sounds so fucking metal
My friend had a glitched Zero the Kamikaze Squirrel cartridge. I think it was the final level where you ascend the level with a jetpack or something and once you reached a certain spot in the level you would be blocked by an invisible barrier so you couldn't complete the level.

Remember having RC Pro AM 2 and put the cartridge a bit tilted. Just a little bit. It didn't have too much side effects, some graphics were a bit glitched but the funniest thing was the money was basically infinite. It showed some weird random data from the chr ROM instead of numbers.
I have the same issue with forgetting where I put stuff. It can be pretty frustrating sometimes. I have accumulated a lot of stuff over the years and it can be hard to keep track off it all. Not to mention I am getting closer to middle age years and have a tendency to forget silly things. Lol
In Area 7, at the beginning part of the stage, where you’re descending on these rocky slopes, if you shoot the magenta-spawner-like creatures when they are partially onscreen and offscreen, the enemy will die but it’s still exists in plain sight and won’t hurt you.
There is another corner we're you die in stage 2 during the boss fight, if you run into the edge of the right side doorframe behind the boss your character just does the death animation without rising, it just plops dead to the ground.
I used to have a super Mario all stars where if you pressed select in Mario 3, you could choose any power up suit you want. I'd play the whole game in a tanooki suit.
soooo glad you captured the glitch where the ground's corner killed you hahaha. I specifically remember that happening to me too as a kid and was wondering if I was losing my mind haha.
The super c glitched game mike has should be a nerd episode think of all the funny lines he could say. I think there could be so much he could do with it
I don't like many gameplay/let's play videos. People like Pewds and Markiplier are way too ott and false where as James and Mike are naturally funny. It's just like being in a room, sat on the couch with your friends playing a game. Keep up the great work guys!
The NES can only draw a few sprites at once, so whenever there are large things moving around, those things are actually drawn on the background layer. The thing is, the NES has only 1 background layer, so games actually have to change the position of the background mid frame so it looks like different parts of the background are moving independently. This game uses the MMC3 mapper chip, which has an scanline counter that games use to time the exact moments when to change the background position. For some reason, that scanline counter doesn't seem to be working, so the background remains at the position that was set at the beginning of the frame all throughout the picture. The MMC3 simply isn't telling the game code when to modify the background's position, so it never does. Dumping this cart would probably result in a normal ROM that works fine on emulators, since it's the mapper chip that appears to be malfunctioning, not the ROM chip, where the program is.
A friend of mine had a superC cart that was all scrambled something was wrong with it. Funny thing is, he knew the game so well, he was still able to beat it playing it all scrambled. It was insane I didn't believe him until I watched him do it. This was in the mid 90's I doubt he still has that cart or can still remember how to beat that game when you couldn't hardly see anything going on.
