@@jp4431 Well, we visited this forest area to do activities like learning about wild life and such. There were 3 cabins in total: one for the boys, one for the girls and one for the teachers. The area had this myth/story to it, that most of us chalked up to being nothing but a story. Right by the cabins was an old abandoned well and one of the kids told me that a guy fell down there and broke every bone in his body, and all he could do was scream for help and that he now haunts the place, occasionally screaming for help, hoping someone would come rescue him. I had recently received an Aztec death whistle as a birthday gift, and I was absolutely thrilled (I was a bit of a weird kid) and I decided I’d bring it along for the trip, so I could attempt to mess with my classmates and try to scare em. I had done something similar 2 years prior in my scout troop. I had found a way to make incredibly realistic fake edible blood (easy to deal with) for Halloween and wanted to pull a prank on them. So on a trip with the scouts I put some “bloody” fingerprints on the outside of the cabin window. Then the girls would see it, freak out and go get scout masters. In the meantime I’d quickly walk over and wipe it off before the scout masters saw it. As soon as the scout masters walked over and didn’t see anything, they shrugged it off and no one believed those girls. In the end they thought they were going crazy. It was quite funny. Anyway, I wanted to try messing with my classmates this time so I brought the whistle and from time to time when we weren’t doing activities and were allowed to explore the area, I’d go a little distance away from the cabins, blow in it a little and quickly move to another area. I had a couple accomplices that made sure no one found out that it was me that made that noise. The boys told the teachers they heard someone scream and asked if any animals in the area made noises similar to a human scream, and the teachers just gave them a weird look and were convinced that they were just joking around. It turned into a whole project of solving the mystery in the boys cabin. They’d gather “evidence” and keep a look out for anything out of the ordinary, connecting what they heard to the story of the guy from the well. It was a struggle not to break down laughing. I managed to keep it under control though. On the last night I wanted to give them one final scare and I stayed up way past midnight and snuck over to their cabin. I then ducked right below an open window and gave that whistle one final big blow, and they literally screamed. I booked it back to the girls’ cabin. I had woken a lot of people up, including the teachers. I saw lights turning on in their cabin as I was running back to the girls’ cabin. Definitely felt an adrenaline rush there. The girls’ windows were closed so most were still asleep when I got back. Only a couple were either already awake or had woken up by the sound of me coming in. I explained what I had done and convinced them not to tell anyone. The teachers rushed over to the boys cabin to see what the hell was going on. The boys said they heard an almost inhuman scream right outside the cabin. Most of them were quite freaked out. The teachers didn’t believe them though and guessed that one of them might’ve screamed from a nightmare and that’s what they heard and that they were already riled up from the story and encouraging each other with their “mystery solving”. Those boys left the trip CONVINCED that that place was haunted. A few years later the mystery was eventually solved when one of those girls from my cabin eventually told the boys what had actually happened. They expressed a mix between disappointment and relief. We all laughed about it, and now it’s just become a funny childhood story.

The "death whistle" is actually one singular tiny whistle found with a bunch of musical instruments, the whistle really sounded like a soft wind and we have no idea what it was used for. Anything other than the fact that it may have been used for religious ceremonies because it was found with a dead guy in a temple with death imagery is simply untrue or unsubstantiated. This is just a 3d printed enlarged version with cool skulls on top, irl it would have been much quieter and much less scary, although it probably would have been spooky at like a sacrificial ceremony or something.

@@Thedude71513Really this type of whistle was common throughout the region and existed long before the Aztecs, although some of these were very different in sound. This only means that we're not sure where exactly the origin of this sound can be traced to, although having heard some of the originals I wonder if this one which imitates a human scream is actually much more modern than we would believe.
