It was a really beautiful city in the past. But the Industrial revolution, the two world wars and the urbanistic horrors of the 1960s and 70s have damaged it really hard.

Same fate befell countless, mainly North European, cities: Plymouth, Portsmouth, Brest, Southampton, Le Havre, Calais, Dunkirk, Rotterdam, yes, Liege, Orleans, Hamburg, Cologne, Warsaw … the list, alas, is endless. All of these cities, the old photographs tell us, were once quite beautiful.

Brussels has large tranches of loveliness amidst the urban sprawl. Bruges, notwithstanding its deadness to all real, daily life, is splendid. Ruined by tourists, though. Antwerp and Ghent I have visited after my youthful indiscretions, and with clear eye appear quite beautiful urban spaces, on the whole. Soft spot even for wee provincial Mechelen; not much to the place, but what there is, is well worth half a day of anyone’s time. But, alas poor Liege, I knew her well, in her beautiful youth before the bullets, bombs and bulldozers got her …
