Thank you so much for your direction! I have been a self learner--and did not know the "little secrets" of applique on the threads! I love this blanket!! my grands are going to LOVE it!
Ty for being so kind in your videos. You and your Mom always brighten my day! And all your tips and tricks and fabulous patterns are a bonus. Can't wait to start making your quilts.
Fean thank you for all the wonderful tips and tricks for using the blanket stitch and knee lift. The blanket stitch is my favorite stich for appliqué too. Now to dig out my knee lift and practice with it. Thank you again. Amazing tutorial.
I just want to say Fran what a joy you are to watch. You have such a sweet and gentle demeanor all while giving such great instruction and information. Thank you. 😊
Fran this was an amazing tutorial! I am kind of self taught with appliqué and have not used the blanket stitch, it looked so much cleaner than the zigzag stitch I’ve used. The trick of pulling the top thread to the back to secure, is genius!!! Thank you! I cannot wait to make my next appliqué and will save this video until your lesion is experienced knowledge stored in my brain!!!
Very helpful information. I love machine appliqué. In fact just finishing up a BOM last appliqué block!! Great timing! Thanks so much for your tutorial!!
Hi Fran, Great tips for embroidery. I'm happy to say I just received my new book 3 Yard Quilts for Kids! I get so excited every time I watch one of your videos! Something I have learned to do when I satin stitch is: when I begin stitching I do a straight stitch to my starting spot, then I turn my piece back around and begin the satin stitch. This gets rid of one of the tail ends because I am now satin stitching over the top of it. Hope this makes since. Happy quilting!
Thanks for all your tips and tricks! I love your calm voice and thorough teaching skills. I may try this now. You gave me the confidence to try it. Thanks
Great tutorial Fran! You make it look so easy! I know it takes practice because I have tried it. But it is certainly something that can be learned with practice. So adorable!
Fran Thank You for such a great video on applicating. I learned a few tricks I didn't know. For instance on the blanket stitch, I didn't know that placing the needle on the outside edge of the fabric. By doing that I can make adjustments. To the outline of the pattern being appliqued. I've watched previous videos, of other RU-vid channels. And they did not mention this trick. I'm so grateful that I'm watching this video today. Because now when I do my blanket stitch on my appliques. They will turn out so much nicer.
Fran, this is an awesome tutorial. I think the fabrics chosen are great! I really appreciated you walking us through the appliqué process, especially in which appliqué stitch would work the best & why. Sometimes I need a visual & this tutorial was extremely helpful.
I mentioned not long ago that I wanted to do applique and here it is! I was so happy to see this. Great video. You are an awesome teacher. The pattern is printing as I write this. Can't wait to start. I know this was long for you but please consider doing more.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I was taught to do satin stitch on the full appliqué and I find it so difficult to keep a nice line of stitching around curves and points of the appliqué. I have some black noses and eyes that I’ve been procrastinating putting into some pieces animal heads. Using the blanket stitch like you showed, I’m ready to get my quilt done. Your tutorial was so helpful.
Fran you are an awesome teacher and you are amazing at details. Thoroughly enjoyed learning about appliqué from you enough that I will undoubtedly give it a try. Thank you for your patience and knowledge!
Thank you very much Fran , for this tutorial . All this time when I appliqued, I just ended the stitches on the applique, not knowing about tying them off. Doing it your way tells me I won't worry as much about fraying or unraveling. You have changed my appliques for the future. I liked that you talked this thru' so well. As einstein said if you truly know something you can explain it to a child. You know your craft .
Thank you Madonna! Yes, we've found that tying off the edges is an important step and one that really helps finish off the appliques 😊 So glad it helped!
This is the work smart not hard method. I should have rewatched before I did this I missed a step it worked but was a lot of extra work and headache. This method is awesome. This was my first time and it was midnight soo. Lol
Great tutorial Fran! Copy paper works great as a stabilizer for the satin stitch. It easily separates from the stitches when you pull it off at the end.
Fran, I have never done the finishing off technique that you used. I usually tie mine off and put a drop of Fray Check to keep the knot solid. I like your way of using a needle to lace it through the stitching. I have only used that way when finishing off serger seams. Thanks for enlightening me!
Thank you, fantastic Fran! This is perfect timing for me, because I just purchased 3 of your kits and got your new book free. I was going to start on the puppy quilt, but was hesitant about doing applique. I generally avoid applique because my brain says, "Huh?" when the directions say 'applique as desired.' This video explains the details and I thank you for it. Fran, you need your own channel because I think this is the best tuturiol your company has put out. One more thing: Do you put a small amount of Fray Check all around the applique so it definitely won't unravel?
I have always wanted to learn how to do applique! Please teach more in another video...you are so clear in the directions of do's and don'ts. Do you sell a kit to go with this pattern that includes everything you used? I dont know what to get¿¿ I am going to watch your tutorial again. Thank you so much for this wonderful video⭐❤✂️🧵
Hi Sherrol, we do have a kit that is used in the tutorial - www.fabriccafe.com/Playful-Petals-3-Yard-Quilt-Kit-p/8022327.htm - the only other thing you will need is; Paperback Fusible Web and tear away stabilizer. Let us know if you need any other help! Good luck!
Hi Carol! You certainly can have your machine knot the ends. From my experience, 2 things happen. The knots don't look very nice and they tend to pull out with wear. You also need to make sure there are no tails on the knots or the tails may show through your light fabric. I hope this helps. - Fran
Hi Mickey! The Heat & Bond I use acts as a stabilizer when doing raw edge applique. I feel like it gives the fabric plenty of support. When doing other applique, like the whiskers on the kitty, I do use a tear away stabilizer on the back.
Hi Deb! The 1st edition did not include enlargements and was written in an older style. The 2nd edition updates the layout to our current format and adds enlargements to all 8 quilts. Thanks for asking!
