Super Easy Tractor PTO Hack! 

The struggle is real!!!! My backhoe was sitting for 2-1/2 years. When I went to disengage the bushhog to hook the backhoe, the spline was rusted onto the shaft. I had to use some heat and a prybar to separate it. When I went to attach the bushhog again, I wire brushed the splines and coated it with Never Seize. Still, it was hard to connect. But next time it should be rust free.

Good try on this. it's the most frustrating part of using a tractor & attaching / reattaching the mower. On mine the space is too small - I can't see the connection - so I have to "feel" the damn thing in. And hold it up. And push it in while pulling back the covered-in-slippery-grease, very difficult sleave at the same time. While crouching down in a tensed pretzel stance - inside the cage-like area the connections make, with newly greased up fittings inches from each side. Don't get me started lol. Tough job. Glad it worked for you.

The crazy thing....I keep a paint pen in my toolbox and never thought it to use it on the PTO shaft. Thanks!

I use a large crescent wrench on the tractor shaft and rotate it just slightly to feel the grooves line up and remove the wrench and on with the lock collar it goes. You have to have the tractor turned off and have to get in there with the pto shaft you can’t do it from a spectators position. Works like a charm ever.

I have the same brush cutter. On yours, do you have to pull back the sleeve in order to get it to slide on to the PTO? For some reason mine will not go on there without pulling back the sleeve. It is difficult to pull back and push forward at the same time!

That’s great except when you have an implement you can’t rotate by hand.

Get a PTO Link and save yourself the hassle.

If you also spray some silicone lubricant on the pto it will make a world of difference!

I’m not strong enough to pull push slide all at the same time, damn … but gonna do this for sure. The do the silicone., I didn’t understand what that first guy said, but every little bit helps for sure. Thank you.

It’s look like the grease worms have eaten off all the grease on shaft and spine. Install some grease and make it lots of easier.

Great idea! Don't why I didn't think of this! It's a pain to hook-up bushhogs...so anything one can do to make it a little easier helps!
