That. Was. Freaking. AWESOME! I get into that position ALL the time with bigger guys and they pass my guard. My problem was I wouldn't get onto my shoulder like you did, such a crucial detail! Thank you so much!

Reak55 Bigger opponents often threaten a heavy stack with will destroy your triangle. This armlock allows a player to transition into another submission without having to simply go back to closed guard and play it safe.

In class I was rolling with a much biger dude than myself, we were working on triangles and at the end of class during live rolling I couldn't sink the triangle but caught him in the armbar 3 times because of this video. MUCH THANKS

i use this move alot in competition and in training , its just natural when the opponent tries to posture , very fast and effective arm bar , gets an instant tapout .

Nice video thanks! Many people often neglect to engage their hips when attempting an arm bar from the bottom position. Again, nice video!

really tight armbar.. this is one of the tightest ones if you extend it will pop their elbow real nice
@ConnectionRioBJJ
@ConnectionRioBJJ 13 лет назад
@amcknnn - With the standard arm-bar you are correct but with both legs over the opponents shoulder, the knees are pointed forward instead of outward and it does in fact help to hold the arm in place for the submission.
@ConnectionRioBJJ
@ConnectionRioBJJ 12 лет назад
If the opponent is playing anti-game with their arms retracted in your guard, No-Gi it can be difficult to attack directly. Your legs are going to do most of the work for you here, pushing the opponents arm with the knee behind the elbow. For the armbar grip, use your outside hand cupping behind your opponent's elbow. Equally important is setting up the submission by creating a reaction... make the opponent react by committing to your first attack.

Every once and a while... that keep me in check remembering to complete the motion without breaking it up into a one two. When the arm bar is defended, try switching back to the triangle or hip out to replace your full guard.

managed to pull it today for the 3rd time in a week, and had my opponent taped out, thanks to the detail 'be on the shoulder'. My opponents were bigger, but I went straight to the armbar not even trying the triangle, and they got surprised each time. Very good technique. Thank you for the extra tip!

Sometimes pulling off a move that hasn't been taught yet may actually impress your instructor, because he'll see that you really know your technique, I had a BJJ instructor about 2 years ago, and on my first day sparred one of his upper belt students, and I caught him in an Omoplata, and got the tap, and he was actually very impressed, because I was the new guy.

There are several ways of dealing with this defense, however not seeing exactly what the hand placement of your opponent is makes it more difficult to answer you. Generally when my triangle is blocked by the opponent framing against my thigh, I cross-grab behind that elbow and hinge the arm outward. All the while keeping the framed hand pinned against my own leg. This allows you to finish with a shoulder or wrist lock and if the opponent lets go armbar or triangle. Good training to you!

the only thing i do different is i push with my legs at same time as they posture to keep them from trying to stack me as i throw leg over, i find it helps me alot as i have thicker legs(harder to get triangle) so i use the armbar, good video never seen it explained as good

Thank you for watching and for the feedback! I suggest drilling this until you know it like the back of your hand, able to pull it off without hesitation... then apply it in free training. There is no disrespect in executing a legal move effectively on your opponents, regardless of where you learned it. You obviously respect your professor enough to ask and there is something to be said for that. Use it with without questioning yourself if it is OK or not. Let me know how it works for you.

@HapaTee it seems like your hips would actually be below the elbow if you aren't getting the tap because you're only attacking the forearm rather than opponent's elbow. try using your cross arm to cup beneath the elbow joint so that it stays within the range of your hips.

@madbowler6 Outside of rnc, guilotine, and kimura(double-wrist lock variations) majority of techniques are risky if you do them inccorectly. Train them over and over until your confident with the technique (excuse my spelling)

This works great! I've been practicing on my husband and I desperately want to try it on the men in my class to prevent stacking, but I don't want to look disrespectful to my instructor by trying a submission that hasn't been taught yet. Do you think it will be disrespectful if I go ahead and try it anyway?

Thanks for the video Dennis! When I have the triangle set on a larger opponent, often times they defend by bringing their arm (the one that's through my legs) and posting their hand against the the inside of my leg/knee, and I can't rip their arm out to properly execute the triangle or get the armlock that your demonstrating here. Can you help please?

I know this is an old video, however if you read this, can you tell me if there is any benefit to raising the hips first, then throwing the leg over? This way the arm is locked in at an earlier stage? For example raise hips at 0:57 then throw the leg over? Rather than leg over head, and then raise the hips. I know it slows it down some, but would be tighter?
@Reak55
@Reak55 11 лет назад
The most common transitions there are in BJJ/SW ? But as you show, why not hold on to the triangle? He only has one attempt to lift you until his strength vanishes.

@ConnectionRioBJJ
@ConnectionRioBJJ 9 лет назад
Lester, yes you may apply the arm-bar without throwing the leg over. However you also risk insufficient leverage to finish if the triangle is loose. I recommend drilling the technique until it feels comfortable, then using it in live rolls, followed by competition. - Dennis

idk if you've already addressed this question or not, but if i'm grappling no gi, is there a certain way to keep hold of those arms? cause the guys i train with are pretty slippery and its a real pain the keep wrist control at the start of that move
