Welcome back to my ‘Ben Collins Gaming’ channel - the place where I'm documenting my journey into a weird and wonderful corner of the motorsport world that’s undeniably exploding in popularity right now - sim racing.
Now I've well and truly started out on my sim journey, I thought it was high time to bring along a much more experienced friend of mine to see just how far I still am from sim racing domination. And that person is the one and only ‪@Super_GT‬.
Steve was a huge help on the day, as we spend a considerable amount of time in Porsche Cayman GT4 race cars at Oulton Park, slowly dialling in my lap times as I discussed his fascinating history.
It's fascinating to see just how good Steve is at pedalling these digital machines around - a skill he's recently been transferring quite impressively over to real-life racing too.
Huge thanks to ‪@simmotorsportuk‬ for having us down for the day: www.simmotorsport.co.uk/

@@ElShogoso Nah, it's not. It's about realizing that rookies is not about winning races, but about getting safely around the track. It took me all of four races to "get out of rookies" which basically means nothing, except that you're allowed to race in faster series. The racing is not necessarily cleaner , up until you reach around 1.8k IR, except in the Superformula Lights series. That's basically bumper car racing without bumpers. I'm still racing the rookie series because it's fun,...just against higher rated drivers.

I swear it's like the n'th time I saw a "pro" sim rig and everything is just turned up to absolute max because bigger number = better. Just because the wheel can be set to break your wrist every time you corner or crash doesn't mean it should. I once sat in a rig like that and the brake pedal was so stiff that I couldn't push it in to the max without almost standing on it and ffb was turned so high up that it was just constant clipping on every movement.

The thing I've always found regarding motion and tactile transducers, is that less is more. You want just enough to feel it, but not so high that it's distracting. The same thing goes for the wheel force feedback - just because the wheelbase is capable of 25-30nm doesn't mean that you should set it that high. I guess you're the better judge here, but I don't think you'd be fighting the wheel like that in a real GT4 with power steering.
@BenCollinsGaming

💯 its useful for sensing initial weight transfers and bumps to sense timing, not for G force
@slaphead90
@slaphead90 11 дней назад
@@BenCollinsGaming Oh I don't disagree, but having visited a couple of sim racing centres I've always found that they've been set up for a so called "experience" - you pay your 30 or 40 quid and just get thrown around for half an hour with every thing set to 11, rather than it being a more realistic experience, and by realistic I mean how one would have their own rig set up for long stints. Actually what I am looking forward too is to when you do finally get your own sim rig, have it set up so that it feels right to you, and then see how much you improve. I'm guessing it will be by quite a lot.
@rexoid0800
@rexoid0800 6 дней назад
I agree, i use transducers and just feeling the road bumps and curbs really enhances the immersion without being too distracting. If you could almost eliminate all the sideways motion but keep some of the lineal i think it would be much better.

Youre definitely learning a lot now! Sim racing to me is learning how to feed off of the subtle visual cues of the cars motion, and coupling it with the steering feedback. Came here to say this. I've done a few sessions with him and the dude is racing Yoda. One of the things he explained to me really clearly and well was how to set up force feedback and interpret what it's telling you, something Ben's obviously struggling with. I bet he'd pick up on Ben's track usage - sim racers abuse the curbs and track limits in a way that you just can't do in real life.
@Stefan-if7kp
@Stefan-if7kp 11 дней назад
The way they both describe the concept of getting used to seeing when the car is sliding is definitely a key to sim racing. No matter how detailed the force feedback is, there is still a visual element you learn to rely on in place of the "seat of the pants" feeling. I find that if you're directly behind another car (in sim), you can lose the visual reference of how straight the car is tracking, it can be really disconcerting if you're used to irl. Really good video. Lot's of good points.

There's definitely some steering feedback adjustments to be had to make it feel more like hydraulic power steering rather than a rack & pinion binding over bumps. Also, vehicle setup is key in sim as it is in the real world. Adjusting a setup to get the car to behave to your preference can make all the difference. Unfortunately in sim, the "ultra fast" people will use unrealistic setups that would never work IRL but are favorably calculated by the game engine. That said, there are plenty of people and real world drivers that setup their cars appropriately (and realistically) and may not be THE fastest but still fast enough to put up fights.

It's a shame the sim rigs aren't set up properly. Ben's comments about the force feedback being too strong, and the motion rig shaking him about too much, tells me all I need to know about this sim company. Although the hardware is capable of very high forces, the correct way to set it up is to dial it down so the feedback is subtle, not obnoxiously overpowered. In the last video, someone mentioned that iRacing wasn't a software they normally use, and that their equipment is well set up for other software. Now here we are on Assetto Corsa, and the equipment is still very poorly configured. Ben, please, avoid this company and go learn how to build your own rig. Your experience will be tremendously better, I promise.

Loving the content - Ben, if you want to drive GT cars in iRacing - you need to get out of rookies and get your 'sports car' license to D. To do this, you need to do sports car racing - Rookie MX5 is a good pace to start. I'm about a week into my iracing journey and i'm already at a C license and able to do GT4 and Porsche Supercup. To get out of Rookies quickly, just stay out of trouble. The game doesn't care about your results at first, just stick at the back out of trouble and pump in some boring but clean laps with no off tracks, spinning or crashing into anything!

Avoiding the turn 1 pile up is an art in iracing. Good quali will save a lot of headache. Stay on the inside on turn 1. Least chance of getting punted there.

It’s pretty simple to get out of Rookies in iRenting. What I did was: Drive the MX5, start at the back, don’t race anyone and just concentrate on doing clean laps. Also having the rig set up correctly helps massively too.

iRacing is worth your struggles Ben, if your struggling to get to A class then it will be either your hitting people or getting yourself into situations where people hit you, also stay on track as the off tracks will stop your climb to A class. Remember that IRacing will log all your races then build a picture of how safe you are on track, so race after race you are building this picture so be consistent in safety not speed, just like the instructor when being judged for your real life race licence. Think of it like getting your actual race licence, but your being judged over many races, if you treat it like this then you’ll climb to A Class fast, iRacing classes are based on safety not speed 👍 Once in A class then you can concentrate on your i-rating as this is the rating based on speed or race results not safety 👍

Lemans Ultimate would be my choice for Ben, iRacing is way to strict for irl style of driving.

I started iRacing in my mid 20s, I haven't been totally continuous on the service but 13 years later what has stuck is the tracks I learned first (i.e. when I was the youngest) are still my best....I think what I'm saying is the younger you are the easier it is to get good at!

@@lilibordei721 100% agree, Bens a better driver than 99% of the player base. iRacing is more like a piano lesson, repetition repetition repetition... drive the perfect line that you have memorized over and over again, don't drive the car to the limit, don't battle people, let faster car though or be punted. ultra clean driving is more important than winning or you get put down a class.

AC is brillant, you should sign up to LFM, its like iRacing but in AC and its free apart from any DLC you might need.

Curious choice to use a mod track. Ideally a laser scan means more precision for the point map and more accuracy to real life for someone who might have driven the real track. AC has enough laser scanned tracks to use.

Drive around at the back on iracing. Don't worry about where you finish, just finish without incident until.your safety rating is up and you can get in the gt3s And always ask them to turn the force feedback down if it's too strong. You'll be faster 😊

Good fun to watch, I seem to suffer the same problems you do on Sims, funny that, racing in a car, you dont notice all the movement, your senses are tuned into different feelings, ie, grip levels, body roll, breaking pressure. but on a sim, it just feels like a bone shaker, thats not connected to the car, all my race car mates all have the same problem, Youre exit speeds are great, but the braking is so hard to judge, it seems easier going from sim to car, than car to sim 😂 if i turn all the movement and feedback off, im much faster. Be great to see, you take the same car around your fav uk track and see the time difference between sim and realword racing, i cannot get anywhere near my lap times in a sim.

Honestly theres no need to have motion on, especially lateral. Its pretty redundant and will detract from the experience.

The problems you're having with iRacing is, as others have said, almost certainly a poor internet connection. I moved from the Sussex coast, which had pre-war telephone wiring, where it was virtually unplayable to a large town in Kent where, by pure chance, the phone exchange was about 50 meters away and the difference was night and day.

About iRacing rookies, results don't matter. Safety Rating is based on "number of turns × number of incidents", so if you finish last with 0x you can always rank up.

I think the bumpiness may also be due to the track geometry. I am pretty sure there's no official Oulton Park for AC and the available one is some sort of fan conversion of rF1 track. The geometry on modded tracks may sometimes be a bit rough, which may account for some of the weird feedback.

Hey Ben, I have only one unsollicited advice! Stop going to experience centers. Get a good alu sim rig, a good pedal set!!!! Very important!!!! A good FFB base with a steering wheel you like.... And then taylor it to you!! Just like in real life, the car is taylored to the drivers....special pads, movable pedals boxes, molded seat fillers. In case of sim racing, if you are arcade racing and sim racing from being a baby...meaning you can be competitive with a rubber band wheel, and the fov cranked op to sitting in the rear of the car....you don't care. Coming from real life racing........you don't have that experience. In the sim the only feedback you can get is your eyes, sounds, and ffb. Haptic is more fun than necessity...(I love when my ass gets a massage going over curbs...) and that moving rig: LESS is better. Your rig should be adjusted to you... Your height, height of the steering wheel, pedal distance..seat position. Once you feel like sitting in the real thing (thinking GT 3 to classic oldies), then comes the FOV police!!!! Get those monitors right, correct height, distance as close as possible, calculated FOV and set correctly. Then adjust the view (seating position) so you get the feeling yep, this looks and feels like I am in the actual cockpit. If you have a moving rig, dial it in to what you know is realistic...you will never get the real feedback....never. But small jerks and movements can give you an idea what the car is doing. And then, last, but the most important part: get you braking pedals adjusted to what you like, what you want. And there is the point, you can ask GT what was the first thing he noticed getting into a real race car.....James Baldwin, Jimmy Broadbent (though he is more serious in a real car then in his sim)...and lots of others said it: the brakes!!!! In sim racing you can go two ways: turn on all the nannies, use auto for everything, don't care about realism, fake the brake and throttle curves, never reach 100 brake force so you never lock up. Super soft brakes with looong travel....so you can easily get that super precise brake line, needed to be fast in iracing (what is making iracing less realistic, but more of a ..".if I can do this very well in iracing and reproduce it in the real world I will be fast thinking."...check Lando's and Max's..video's). OR!!!! you make it as hard and real as it get's. No nannies, no auto stuff, the shifter on the right place, flappy pedals for flappy pedal cars, stick shifters for sequential boxes, H pattern for old skool cool cars. And as realistic as possible brake feeling!! If you get in a well adjusted sim rig....you will be faster then anybody else....because your natural experience will recognize everything. The dash is where it is supposed to be, the A pillar is as always in the way (yes I am talking about you Aston Martin!!!), your vision will have everything in place (part of causing your motion sickness). Any track you go, you will be fast. TIP: use some kind of radar....because mirrors are not really mirrors in sim racing, causing situational awareness issues. For the Brakes: my example.. I have Heusinkveld sprints, spent a year figuring out how to get the feeling right. Now I have the exact same feel as my Track day car. I instanly gained 1 second. And then my biggest tip: brake way earlier in the beginning. You are going way faster then you think in a sim!!!!! If you think ...hmmm...doing 150 kph, going to brake there for that turn.....you are probably doing 250 kph, going to brake too late, having to brake way too hard, struggling all the way through the turn, and being 3 secs down. Ask me how long i took me to figure that out.. (only being sim racer for 4 years now, never done karts or some car racing in real life). Remember old skool....RPM and gears!!! Why not go and pay Daniel Morad a visit????? His rig is sick, has great videos, and wins GT3 races in his Merc!!! He even got his community to do laps with his race cars!!!!! Interesting video on that!!! And last but not least: have fun!!! Welcome to the rabbit hole sim racing is.... It starts with a g27 on a desk....and ends somewhere in the 24 hours in a real racing car, or in your case, you start in an expensive race car...and end up with a 50000 pound sim rig in the garage and an angry wife!!!!
