What does it take to be a Paralympian?
The Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games begin on the 24th of August 2021, with 537 events from 22 sports to be contested. They are the culmination of five years of blood, sweat and extreme sacrifices made by all the athletes competing.

You know something? This trailer for the Paralympics has been the highlight of the Tokyo Olympics for me! It's just brilliant... inspired choice of song and completely unique (and funny) take on what it takes to compete at the highest level in sport... any sport. Maith thú from Ireland!

how is it warm? “to be a paralympic there’s got to be something wrong with you” or their other slogan “it’s rude to not stare” benifits of switching ableist phrases to being good and inclusive. people with disabilities *are* stared at and ridiculed for something they can’t change nor is their fault. channel 4 are trying to capitalise off of the trauma disabled & neurodivergent people experience by turning the negative phrases that are so often thrown at them into marketing campaigns, which is not warm at all. telling people there is something wrong is not going to drive acceptance at all.

I'm genuinely not saying this for kudos or for people to say "oh look at you, how inclusive you are!!", but I can't wait for the paralympics to start, the athletes who compete in these games really are super human. Well done channel 4 for another great advert and for covering things that other networks are apparently not willing to cover. Come on team GB!!!!!!

This is great! I love seeing Boccia here too, because the disabled people at my school used to do it for PE. My friends had disabilities including blindness and cerebral palsy as well as things like autism but it was something all of us could do that was accessible! We just needed someone to clap or have a ball with a bell or something in it for the blind girl! We even went to a local competition with other schools!

Actually this ad acknowledges they made a mess of previous paralympics ads and they have taken on the criticism. eg. The ball smashing the word super abs leaving it just as human, because for some reason they used the tagline superhuman (when disabled people are anything but)

They are not super humans. In the ad a ball smashes the word “super”, leaving it to read “humans” to show we need to stop thinking of them as super humans, we need to stop thinking of them as inspirational. Disabled people have to battle against the obstacles put in their way by abled people. Branding them as “super humans” is in poor taste

@@cking5530 they're super human to me and inspirational. I've had Covid and been left with crutches and calipers... Because I couldn't walk at all at first. It severely affected my spine. Every single time this comes on during the day? I'm inspired, even if it's just taking my bins out or doing my own shopping because you've no idea how hard it is for some people. But we fight and live life to our best 👍😉 So be grateful for your active physical life because it could change in a heartbeat. 💜

@C King has a point. After the 2012 Olympics in London when Paralympians were first branded as "super" human, disabled people, of which I am one, got a LOT of abuse be it straightforward or underhanded. The thinking was that "if Paralympians could do it, than why do you need extra help mate?" I had taxis refuse to stop for me, many doors I was unable to open because of spinal issues, constant questioning of my disability even though I could barely breathe as well. I LOVE the fact that they smashed the "SUPER" part. After all, no one was calling Olympians "super" human. All of them are humans at the top of their skills.

If we generally think peak athleates who go on such exraordinary lengths then olympians and paralympians are superhuman . Not because they are disabled they are not angels sent from the heaven or every shit i hear . We all are humans with diferrences and they should be helped as non disabled people have needs and they are helped Like with airplanes instead of your own wings or cars ...

I thought it meant in a ‘it’s so intense, tough and exhausting that you must be mad to want it so much and put your body and mind through it’ type thing. Kind of a exhilarating, determined sort of desire. But equally I see how it can be taken the other way too.

Basically there's a song ( which I can find the lyrics for you) and characters are not speaking. Well almost. You can hear some groaning sounds and the lady at the end arriving at the restaurant saying FFS at there's no special entry or steps being built for people using wheelchair. The rest is just about ironic scenes of people trying to get normal but they can't. If you need any help ask me! Xxcc

Looking back for nostalgias sake and believe me… even if the campaign intends to explain the human side of athletes in training and determination at its grittiest. Lots of thought went into this, even at the “might as well quit” line worth defying for greatness. Strength, always!

This as is not supposed to be inspirational, because disabled people should not be your inspiration when they have to fight against obstacles put in place for them by ableds. eg the ad actually shows a wheelchair user unable to get into a shop because of one step.

I think that it's a lot of people being offended on behalf of other people. The Paralympic's is a big thing in the U.K. and it ran with the tag line 'To be a Paralympian their must be something wrong with you', to be a Paralympian it's all a bit tongue in cheek so I don't see what the issue is.

This video has been added to the media studies A level this year. it has replaced " Claudia sings Sunshine on a Rainy Day (Full Version) | WaterAid" this is an outrage. the community we built up in that comment section so Claudia could get some water has been demolished. Really looking forward to seeing our TeamGB athletes competing in Tokyo. I know a lot of disabled athletes hate the 'inspirational' label, but putting aside their disabilities for a moment, what other word can you use for someone so dedicated, who has worked and trained so hard to reach the peak of their sport, and also had to overcome all the financial and other barriers put in front of them by society? They are badass.

If could PERFECTLY be either a middle name or Dee like the letter "D", for Doevendans, which is the OP's last name as well.
