it's so funny to hear someone saying that the Deutsche Bahn is on time because here they have a big reputation for always being late😂
@RogerDeelaw
@RogerDeelaw 4 года назад
the other day i took the train, that already came 10 minutes late. Accidentally it was the wrong train, so i got off at the next station as soon as i realized. My destination was only 1 Station in the other direction. The next train was scheduled in 5 Minutes. Then it proclaimed, it would be 5 Minutes late. 10 Minutes later it proclaimed it would be 15 Minutes late. I ended up walking to my destination, it took me half an hour, it was cold af but it seemed to be the better choice, because these things happen on a regular basis, in a major city. Can't imagine how it is in the US, when THIS is considered "on time" xD

You forgot the most important bus question :D If every double seat is used by at least one person and you enter the bus, you will sit next to a stranger. On the next bus stop other people leave the bus and there are free double seats but you sit still next to the stranger. Would you change your seat to a free double one or would you remain seated? Because if the stranger next to you switches his seat, you would think he/she did this, cause you stink or he/she just doesn't like you. So as not to sadden the person sitting next to you, you're bus buddies for the rest of the bus ride and you don't change your seats even if there are several free double seats.

The Bus-logic is real: sitting at the seats in the back, like the 5 seats at the back is for wanna-be cool five to six-graders, sitting exactly in the front seats is for nerds or „unpopular“ people, sitting in the back, but the seats right infront of the last ones is actually the coolest. At least that was the bus-logic in our bus, but it could have changed already. :D

I can really relate to the bus-rant! For me, the order of where to sit goes like this: First, look for a free row. If none is available, look for a four-person seat with only one person in it. If that exists, sit diagonally across from that one person. If not, sit next to someone else in a row. AND as soon as you sit down next to a stranger, that is now your destined friend for this bus ride. You never move away from that seat, even if another row becomes free. Would look rude, I guess... even though you would avoid sitting next to them at the start... huh.

There are three busses to town in the morning - ten minutes apart, because those busses drive through other villages as well and you can't fit all those people in one bus. And then there is a bus from the town back to my village - one at twelve, one a one o'clock, one at three and one at five. After five classes, six classes, eight and ten classes a day. And if you are an adult, you just have to drive with all those school children, or go by car, which most people do
@lazironlauski916
@lazironlauski916 4 года назад
At my village, on a normal school day there is first the Schoolbus to Highschool (Gym, Rea, Haupt-), a little later there is the bus to elementary school (Grund-). The next bus is COMING from two of the Highschools (Gym, Rea) a little later the other Highschool (Haupt-, their school ends later), then from Elementary school and at the afternoon one at 4:00 and on at 5:00 o'clock for the School projects that last till the afternoon. That's all. Only School busses. They don't even drive at Weekends and holidays, so if you are an adult you have to either drive to work or hope that the bus driver lets you in to sit next to all the Pupils. Some don't even let you in because it's "only for pupils". We don't have a train, subway (i mean the train kind, not the Sandwich shop) or anything else to get somewhere.

thing about experiencing Germany: every place is different. Especially every region is much different. People and culture in in north differs so much from the south, same fro west and east Germany. So my advice for experiencing Germany is, visit vastly different geographic location, but also visit big cities and rural areas. Live in Germany is colorful and each part has it's own unique charm
@swanpride

Yeah, it pretty much is a matter of your own taste...I mean some people are really into churches and old castles, others prefer some city life, the next wants a little bit of both, then there are the ones who prefer the mountains and the ones who prefer the beach but at the end of the day, every area of Germany has something to offer. It just depends what you are looking for.

the reason why the gum is so spicy to you, even compared to like hot asian food, is, that menthol spicyness doesnt hit your heat-receptors like chili, but the cold receptors instead. thats why your moth feels cold after the gum, like your mouth is hot after curry. basically, your hot receptors are tpretty tolerant, youre used to hot "flavor" in your mouth, but not to cold "flavor".

The trick at the register is to sort your items already while putting them on the conveyor thing. I usually put heavier things that can't break first and lighter or fragile stuff after - same order I'm packing them into the bag. It is also useful if you have more shopping bags to put stuff that they have to weigh - like fruits or veggies - as break items in between bags. Like this you have time to switch bags while they are weighing your stuff. Nobody is a born good shopper by the way, we all have to learn. :)

Efficiency is the word that the big supermarket(store)chains use. As a former cashier I saw people spending hours deciding what to buy but complaining to me that they are waiting too long in line, and I was really fast. I cannot imagine a world where I had to actually put my clients groceries in bags when I have 20 other people in line. Of course it's natural to help out a mom with a kid, an elderly person but when you're a healthy grown up I expect you to put your own groceries in the bag. If you have a plan of how to do it it's even better :)

You are NOT the only one getting all stressed at the supermarket (I grew up here). Some tricks: * Open your bags in the moment you walk past the cashier, so you are ready to throw stuff inside. * Pay by card, thus keeping the cashier busy for some time (they have to press a button, card goes in, waiting, ...) * Most important point: Already sort your groceries on the conveyor belt in the order you want to put them in your bag (preferably heavy and solid things up front, lettuce and bread at the end) * aaaand: don't get nervous when letting the people behind you wait. Finish packing your stuff, then pay. If it takes a while, so be it. If you skip this you end up mixing up all your stuff with that of the person behind you and they won't be happy either.

You avoid sitting next to another person on the bus as long as its possible... if there is any empty row left, you take that first... only once there are no empty rows left, then you can sit next to another person... usually you pick a skinny person, so there is still some personal space left... or you just stand instead, there are people who rather stand then sitting next to someone else... personal space is a real thing here. I know it might sound crazy but that is now it works here from Flensburg to Freiburg. Only some people don‘t follow those unwritten rules: 1) crazy strangers who want to talk (hope that never happens to you) and 2) old people that have a favorite row, usually next to the exit... if an older person wants to sit next to you, you will accept that with a smile or even offer to leave the row if that senior citizen has shopping bags. But other than those two exception, pretty much everyone follows those rules described above.

In the summer you can go swimming in the lake which is really cool because it's in the middle of Konstanz, and there are a lot of beautiful castles and churches around this area. (Also some old volcanoes with castles on top) On February 20th there is carneval or Fasnacht as we call it, its super big here in Konstanz and in Köln or Aachen. An expat's tips for handling grocery store checkout in Germany: 1. Keep 1€/ 50 cent coin with you before you got to the store. Take the trolley for shopping. In case you don't have it, at least take 2 store provided shopping baskets in your hands as you enter. 2. Keep your shopping basket/ trolley with you while checking out. Just throw in each item as it gets scanned into the basket. Transfer it to your bag in peace later. That way, you can sort properly like keeping the refrigerated items together and don't end up putting the grapes or tomatoes at the bottom of your shopping bag. 3. If possible, pay with debit cards (Credit cards are still not accepted in some of the low cost stores.) 4. Try to keep the cost of checked out items below 25€. With modern contact less cards, it would not ask for a pin that way. You can just flash it close to the payment machine and move on.

I work at lidl and the reason we scan the items so fast is because they take our time while we do it (iteams scanned per minute) and if you are to slow you get fired and lose your job. I dont think there is a single person in Germany who likes that we have to go so fast but we just dont have another choice. I hopes that helpes to understand. :)

I can definitely relate to the whole bus and grocery store thing! I really like Hamburg cause its just beautiful, you are close to the sea and they have this place called Speicherstadt which is also interesting. it looks a bit like Amsterdam but with bigger buildings. Outside from Germany I can recommend you Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Den Haag in the Netherlands cause its close to Germany and they are also close to each other. Also if you should get the chance to go to Italy, use it! For me its one of the most beautiful countries in the world!

Cities to visit in Germany -Berlin: It´s so not representative of the rest of Germany BUT its very multicultural, the art and music scene is good and it´s just a fun time! -Dresden: They don´t have much but visit the "Liebfrauenkirche am Markt" and eat at the italian Restaurant that has direct view on the Church (yummy!). They also have really nice art galleries (one of the most known art colleges are there). -Bonn: because it´s the old capital and really: it´s such a small an nice city! If you´re there visit the Cafe Varitee (they have super nice tea and cakes) and I can also recommend Tuscolo (again: italian restaurant). From there you can visit the university (which was once a castle) and other historical buildings (e.g. birth house of Beethoven). -Hamburg: it´s another very big, very classy city with beautiful restaurants, nice architecture, great musicals and amazing shopping opportunities (it´s expensive tho). Hamburg is one of the wealthiest cities in germany and you see quite a lot of luxe there, but I promise: the people are usually super friendly! That´s it! There are many more places to go but I think those really have a nice european flair and are enjoyable.

I am 100% familiar with the bus seat heuristics. 😉 There is a German joke about the differences in attitude between the north and the south, which is sometimes told with pubs, and sometimes with trains or buses; it goes like this: “If a Bavarian gets on a bus and there is one single other passenger on it, the Bavarian will sit down on the seat next to him. If a northerner gets on a bus and there is one passenger in each row of seats, he'll get off again, because clearly the bus is full.” 😁 The trick to avoiding stress at the super market checkout is to throw all the items back into your basket, as soon as they whizz through the scanner, then pay, then take the basket off into a quiet corner to pack your bag at your own speed. In some super markets there are even tables or counters just for that purpose.

Glad you have learned your bus etiquette:) Germany and England similar for that. Find in small town all the old people and anyone not a kid will often say hello as you walk but not to chat. Big city not as you likely don’t see the person again.
