How do your joule ringer videos not have more views?? Your videos caused and encouraged myself to go down an amazing scientific rabbit hole. Thank you for your contributions.

This is an excellent overview of your coil. What a simple process. Most thought it would be more complicated. Using an O-scope is revealing as well. Thanks again for your kind sharing.

when the transistor opens and closes very fast, it pulses the DC input so you get an equivalent ac output. The opening and closing of the transistor is driven by the magnetic saturation of The coil and its iron core. Those devices can pulsate at megahertz. You can get DC and AC readings at the output. (anode and cathode of the transistor).

I have had some high voltage trouble with my joule thief. I then converted it with an lm 358 op amp to run a 12v led. Before my pnp transistors were over heating with the op amp and I felt some high voltage tingling on my fingers.

My findings: Add a tap resister at the base and connect to positive with a momentary switch or your can tap the positive from the resister. Also: you can add a small single coil by it's self at the beginning of the positive wire to the primary coil and it will increase brightness output without messing with the transformer windings. I have been using a 20uh coil and it helps big time the ones I got out of a monitor or you can use a small ferrite bead and wind 20 turns of 14.

Hi, Today I have successfully replicated your SJR 3.0 with 1 3/8in=3.5cm OD yellow toroid, 2n3055 TR & 200+ winding 26G secondary & for 23G primary, started with 72 winds & then unwind it in many steps & ended up at 15 turns with the best brightness of one 30w CFL). I am a hobbyist. I live in Greece & here we have 230v AC, I mean the lamps are rated 230v, as such the winding ratio must be differing with respect to yours. Anyway all credits go to lasersaber. cheers. You think I can add more cfl in parallel, Please reply me if you have easy time. Thanks.

Can you upload this schematic to your website. This one helps out the most since it tells us which one is the primary and secondary

Now i have got it to work by increasing the amps, going up to 13v and removing some winds on the thick coil. it only restarts if i disconnect both poles and reconnect... leaving the neg on all the time stops it restarting.I noted my coil was 20mm not 24mm thick like your spec. Thanks lasersaber, I am very happy with this:)
@aracknidd
@aracknidd 10 лет назад
think i had difficult time getting it to go because i was using a cfl and 11 watts at that.. but it lights up great, i would guess its doing what a 8 watts mains cfl would do. Uses a lot of amps.. currently its running of 12v bat (8 D size 1.5v)
@mnasim31
@mnasim31 10 лет назад
Hi, I saw Lynx put one diode from E to B of transistor. You can try this setting. D-bat is rated 4733mAh/Alkaline one 17000mAh which is probably not enough to start/run a cfl driver like this one.

after fiddling with this circuit a 100x i finally realized why i think it doesn't work.. I'm based in UK so need a 110v bulb! Da! How many winds for 220v bulbs? Would the wire thinkness be the same?

can any one help me.. I have the above circuit and have a 9v bat, when i connect it the bulb flashes once and stops, then after a min i reconnect it flashes again.. any ideas about what is going on?

@WhatTheHeckTV 10 лет назад
reduce the 9 volt to six volts,you can try 3 or 4 a a batteries to or 6 aa batts ,i think you are giving the bulb to much current or you have a dead battery

If all else fails then just use a Radio Shack 12v transformer (backwards). It really doesn't matter if it isn't super efficient if you can't get your project to work at all-- OR it sceams so loud that it makes the neighbor's dog bark. Lasersaber's projects are great ---just adjust them to your personal needs.

You're driving a LED bulb there. There's an easier way. Just replace the high voltage dropping resistor inside the LED bulb with one that drops the voltage just enough for whatever lower voltage you're using. Common modern LEDs run at 3.4 to 3.8 volts (older styles run on 2.2-2.8 volts).

what is that annoying high pitch sound. Does it need to function with this high pitch or is that also "tuned" out?

A toroid is an easy thing to make Just find a transformer from any micro wave or in a 1980's radio 110 A/c to 12 volt wall wort A metal pipe or bar 12 or 8 inch's copper wire of two sizes Oh yes you would have to use two NPN in order to be able to be used but it would have to be a flip flop arrangement but the heat would be a factor ib the design or just find an old junk TV some where.for a PNP transistor it a PNP type used here

Sorry to bother you im having issues. I have a transformer that has 2 wires for 240v on primary to 5 a wire secondary with 30v or 15v center tapped or 7v. I followed your guide using a 2n3055 and used the 15v center tap and 240v windings with 9v battery but nothing happens. The impedance says 255ohms primary and 17ohms secondary or 9ohm center tapped and final at 3 ohms. Spent a good few hours and really scratching my head. All connections fine, transistor is fine, battery fine. Transformer? thx
