Every year there is one Super Metroid hack that stands above the rest. Last year we had Subversion, in 2021 we had Super Duper Metroid, 2020 was VITALITY, 2019 was Ascent etc. This year had been very disappointing until now, because Super Junkoid is sure to be the SM hack of the year.
World Building Lore: The snake has followed her every day for years after she gave it water. Because the snake worshiped her to the point of idolatry, it wanted her to be a goddess. But the snake was small and mundane, until it entered her dream where it could be great and powerful. Every night she dreamed the same dream of the snake trying to place her as a goddess, but the dream was imperfect and the snake struck her down in the dream, which is why there are so many twisted and broken Junkos in the world. It did this every night, each time trying to make her a goddess in the dream so that it could worship her for years, placing things in the dream to make her more powerful until finally she was strong enough to lay the snake low as it worshiped her, and ascend from her dream back into the waking world.
@@_Majoras Haha, reminds me of the original DOTA, when it was a WC3 map. Literally any hero using the black king bar would shout "FOR KHAZ MODAN" in the same dwarven voice as the vanilla dwarven mountain king. Doesn't matter if it was some eldritch horror, an old man, or a sorceress. EVERYONE grew larger and became magic immune for Khaz Modan.
@@_Majorastheres some custom songs that do (example: Radix - Fire and Ice) but for the most part its just easier to use the existing one instead of taking the time to create a entirely new sound set
I don't think I've ever seen Magic Soap (that is, the ability of a save point to recharge you actually be turned on from an in-game item) EVER implemented into a hack before. I must say also, Junko's pose when she acquires a Suit is... awesome. This little lady's been through a lot but she's still spunky and spry and ready to face the world ahead. And ready to probably become an indie game star, I'd say. I've played Guacamelee and Gato Roboto, or "Mexicotroid" and "Meowtroid" as I call them. Junko absolutely might join them.
@@phillipfaile3122Because evidently it's a pain in the ass to change sounds. The SPC700 audio processor is separate from the main CPU and uses separate instructions from the CPU. Changing music is one of the biggest breakthroughs in SM rom hacking IMO. The tools for hacking this game keep getting better and better, lowering the bar of entry and at some point, SM will become basically just a game engine that anyone can tweak the their purposes. For the most part though you have to know ASM to do these kind of hacks. Otherwise, all you can do is changing graphics and room orders.
The moment the intro music stopped, I kinda got chills. Damn, this girl really had no chill over an overly affectionate snake... Then again, that snake's probably a creep. ...in hindsight, I think I now understand a bit better what the snake is meant to represent. It is called Asmodeus, after all... Also, this is one a those hacks where it feels like it being a hack of another game is actually holding it back, because this looks so good, it might actually become even better if it became its own thing, freed from the constraints of another game!
@@PastelHime yeah... not only that, it seems like it's trying to clone Junko, down in the Deep Purple, with the many failed clones being sent to the Blood Bethel. Lord knows what he wants to use these clones for... although I do have a shuddering, horrible idea. And now for some extra squick value: we already know what the serpent motif is meant to represent by its... shape, so to speak. So what do you think is the white-ish, gooey substance that's filling the lower levels of Sheol? Also, I found a secret room right before the final boss. A bedroom, arguably a recreation of Junko's bedroom, with a frog statue that says something along the lines of "why can't we stay here forever?" Something that brings me comfort is that the gigantic malformed Junko clone sacrifices herself for the real Junko, and when it dies it gives her the power of Love, which is the beam power that kills Asmodeus. As the demon of lust, Asmodeus only understands carnal passion, and blind, obsessive worship. Sacrificing oneself for another is indicative of a deeper bond than flesh or crazy devotion... it shows true, actual care and love for others, which Asmodeus can't truly understand. I don't know why that particular Junko clone was the one to spare Junko (other than the fact it has to fit with Super Metroid's structure), but still, it's nice to think about.
@@Mike14264 OH GOD I didn't even watch the whole longplay (I've noticed that it has content that triggers me) but still, thanks for the rundown of the lore of the game. Your perspective makes a lot of sense
@@PastelHime uh, yeah, it has some stuff that's... somewhat more intense than your average Metroid game, but nevertheless, I'm happy to have helped! This is mostly just my perspective, but given the theories regarding the first Junkoid, it's probably not very farfetched.
it throws my mind a little every time i notice the player character has jiggle physics; literally the last thing i expected to see in a metroid hack for some reason XD;
This is ABSURDLY Good, and I hope they're working on their own projects as well. I also kind of wish they'd changed the jump sound and art, but perhaps they're more skilled at art than programming.
Complete mind blown ohhhhhhhh my god. This is creativity at it's best. Love the music too , if you guys can upload the soundtracks for this game,I will be gladly appreciated. Well done
To the creator of this Rom hack, you're actually pretty damm talented, you should actually make a Indie Game, so i hope you're actually are making one as well, it looks brilliant for a super metroid hack! Like i can try & create a cool soundtrack for Super Junkoid's update that has vibes of Dreams & Nightmares.
There's this song i was tryin to remember what Game is it from, and I got it: Majora's Mask Great Bay Temple. But it translated PERFECTLY into SNES hardware. I recognized a few others from Castlevania too.
Man I gotta find this music somewhere, absolutely slaps Edit: 2 of these songs are from Castlevania can't remember which. One is from Scv4 and the other is Castlevania 64. It's called malus disaster
I don't usually play many hacks but oh my... This one is an absolute banger! Got the same guilty pleasure to play it as the first-time playing SM when I was a kid. Need to play Junkoid (NES) now but sure, this universe needs his own metroidvania game. It will be an instant buy for me. The next "Axiom Verge"?
Now I do think this rom hacks art style is quite wholesome in some way Although seeing moments like this 14:44 Does give me some lore expanding brain and a little bit creepy but still I think the lore could go deep with these corpses Edit: and Mabye show how the death looks… or Mabye don’t I’m reconsidering Edit: even shinesparking into the sky to escape looks super badass even though this art style was I guess meant to be adorable but also moments like that is just… wow I wish I could do something like that in the original super Metroid
Amazingly thorough reworking, I wish there were more like this. It's a shame that there aren't any similar ones for Scurge: Hive, Sonic 3D Blast and Chaos Engine.
A very good hack indeed. I completed the hack 2 days ago. Today I found all the items cause the statue in the final area was saying in order to proceed one must master magic, so I ended up finding all the items, returned to the final area to the statue. I'll leave it up to you all to master magic (find all items) & to discover what awaits you when you return to said statue.. My only caveat of the hack is that the escape sequence could've been longer. I love a good escape challenge I feel it's like the best part of the game :) But nonetheless Damn good hack overall.. 👍
This hack is totally amazing. Who ever made this did an excellent job. Finally, something new AND fun. To the Creator of this SUPERB hack, You have revolutionized Super Metroid, with this hack, FOREVER.
Just in case anyone was curious what the first stage theme of this game was originally from because it racking my brain to, this is a super Metroid remix of the waterfall theme from Castlevania 4.
I usually don’t play Romhacks but decided to give this a shot to scratch that Metroid itch. It was really fun! I just beat it now I’m trying out the original NES rom hack and I noticed a similarity. The first game’s main character looks similar to the boss that replaced Ridley in the SNES game. I wonder if there’s some lore bits there 🤔
I gotta love that opening storyline. "I saved this thing's life. It thinks I'm a goddess now. I MUST KILL IT." I didn't watch the full longplay because soon in I decided I might just play this myself, but I suspect there might be a plot twist where Junko is kinda nuts.
the problem isnt the thinking shes a goddess...its the fact that it trapped her in a dream world in order to keep her as a goddess. thats in the opening monologue. "the snake was always there, even in my dreams / in those dreams it towered over me / it wanted to worship me and keep me in this dream forever". but then she still might be nuts, who knows. i didnt watch the full playthrough either i just skimmed for a few ideas of how it plays.
@@sariarosegold In the first Junkoid game the snake was actually just a manifestation of the nightmares she kept having, so it's possible this is all just some weird nightmare she's having.
Who needs Metroid Dread (even though it is an amazing game!). This has to be one of the coolest and unique Super Metroid rom hack. I love the wake-up animation that replaces Samus Aran's apperance animation. And also, you can drown if you stay underwater for too long. That's a really neat twist.
The level design is what you'd expect from one designer--pretty straightforward with few instances of true surprise while exploring--and the boss encounters are utterly weak. Sure, they're thematic, but they are way, way too easy and even simpler than the originals. However, the atmosphere and even the item system hit the spot. Only real objective trouble, then, is to switch out some sound effects. There has to be a way to do that, though few designers ever bother. The mod would benefit from having some house sound effects--not to mention original soundtrack, as I've recognized a few tracks from Castlevania 64 for instance. What was used does suit the freak show mood. Overall, this is a good indicator that the mastermind should consider rounding up a bunch of like-minded souls and make this game happen on its own game engine.
