On April 6, 2020, I set out to Berea, OH after catching CP 7011 lead Q166. This train was 56K and it was so loud I could hear it howling 3 miles away! Enjoy the video!
Great catch! The EMD 710 turbo howl is quite a sound to experience. I've heard ot from a UP ACe, and that sound carries for miles and miles. This sound is normally caused by the turbo bearings getting ready to call it quits. The shape of the exhaust routing acts like the bell of a horn and amplifies the sound creating this distinctive howl. A common misconception is that the traction motor fans are making that noise. However if you have ever heard this sound in person, you'll know first hand the noise is coming straight out of the stack. Great catch!
Indeed, I thought it was the fans for the longest time too. In truth, as others said, the fans would blow apart long before they would ever make a noise like this.
