I actually think you not knowing about base SM64 gives this video a very unique aura. It's like a creepypasta protagonist who hears about a game that gives so many people, including their friends, nostalgia in a comfy but unsettling way. So they decide to buy a copy of the game themselves to check it out, only they don't get the game most other people do. Then they try to talk to those friends like "yeah I get what you said about it being kind of creepy, the first level taking place in a pitch black void was pretty uncanny." Only for their friend to respond "... What are you talking about? None of the levels look like that."

It’s deeply fascinating seeing someone who has no familiarity with Mario 64’s weirdness play this. Someone familiar with the game wouldn’t think twice about the floating eyeball enemy, and immediately know how to defeat it, but to The Librarian, it’s kinda confusing and offputting
@MyFoot
@MyFoot 5 месяцев назад
its wild. I assume the romhack would have figured you'd play the orginal, so youd know to defeat bowser, or long jump, or all of that. what the numbers mean when you unlock certain things. Recording your self and watching it wasnt a thing when it came out, but i imagine this is what it was like figuring stuff out on your own.

In the original Super Mario 64, the castle wasn't all that big. There was a front door leading into the ground floor lobby, and beyond that there was a basement and a second floor. It was all normal for what you'd expect from a castle, fairly congruent with its design, and undeniably iconic. There were fifteen courses, and they were all very cut and dry. There was a grassy battlezone populated by Bob-Ombs, a vertical tower upon which the Thwomp King ruled, a desert world, a lava world, a few water and ice-themed courses, and three Bowser levels. The game was revolutionary, but it always felt a little lacking. You always wanted there to be... _more._ More _castle,_ more _courses,_ just... _more places._ Imagine that there stands a single door before you, and behind that door stands three more, and behind each of those doors is four more, and along the way, you'll come out of a door some dozens of doors later and find yourself standing before a single door again. That's what B3313 is. It's more castle. Wherever you go, and however long you search, there'll always be _more castle._ You could walk through door after door for hours, and it'll only be after hours that you find the hallways have started _repeating._ There never _stops_ being more castle. There's always another door to go through. There's always more fun to be had. But it's not Super Mario 64. Very little of what you experienced was in the original game, and even what seemed familiar wasn't... _right._ Nothing is how it should be; nothing makes sense. Nothing's congruent, there's no way of knowing what's behind any door, and what you _think_ you knew is more like a scattered memory. It's like a funhouse mirror or a rippling pond; everything stands just... _an inch to the left,_ or the geometry is _bigger_ or _smaller than it should be, or... _ distorted_ and _uncanny._ The music is never right. The shading isn't right. The HUD is wrong, and it keeps... _changing_ between levels. The enemies don't look the same, and Mario sounds like someone else. His moveset is all wrong, and the physics don't work the same. Luigi isn't supposed to be here, and... there was never a _painting of Peach there before._ A shadow stalks the endless halls. You're still trapped inside your own walls. The Toads peer back with blank faces. _It hurts. I'm not having fun. Turn it off._ Can you hear the Princess calling? ... ...Didja like my dramatic prose? Anyways, I was a little leery when I heard you hadn't ever played SM64 before, but I think the nauseous levels of confusion really added to the experience! It played very well into the kind of phenomenon you're always talking about, where the childhood memories you have of something just... _aren't right,_ and when you try to recreate them, everything just feels _wrong_ and _uncanny._ In trying to imagine what it was _supposed_ to be like without _knowing,_ I think the feeling came down on you _twofold!_ This hack _really_ isn't for beginners, but you provided a truly unique outlook in playing it as one, so I'd be very interested in seeing more! I'm a _huge_ fan of B3313, myself, and it was a special kind of _freeing_ to watch you bumble about, _stars in your eyes,_ chasing whichever door seemed most interesting. My only experience with this hack has been _mapping_ it, which, by the way, is _horrendously tedious!_ In the outdated version I gave up on mapping, the one you're playing, the map I made had over a _thousand_ data points of entrances, exits, and potential courses-and I wasn't even _close_ to done. With the dozens of hours I devoted to it, there were still a _bunch_ of areas I watched you go to that I'd just never _seen_ before. It's even worse in the Unabandoned version, which has... I believe somewhere above _400_ stars in it. There are rooms upon endless rooms, some of them loop into identical rooms which are actually _different,_ and as you get more stars, I've heard that some entrances actually just _change._ If you haven't picked it up, yet, the hack is largely predicated around the phenomenon of liminal spaces, and it strives to present every individual room as _disconnected, jarring,_ and _slightly eerie._ I genuinely think that, if you were to devote the _Librarian treatment_ to each and every room, isolating it and examining it as a sole entity, you'd probably never run out of content. There's just... _so much castle_ to explore, and it's all _super janky._ Not that there aren't _other_ draws, as well. Hidden with varying degrees of success throughout the game are what the community calls _horror events,_ where... _bad stuff_ tends to happen. You found that cave in the castle grounds, which is probably the easiest to stumble on considering it just about tells you _don't go in here, it's spoooky._ I was biting my lip as you went through the Internal Sewer System, though, because you entered through a junction that allows you to find _another_ horror event, and you just happened to go down the safe tunnel. So... if you wanna see somethin' _freaky,_ you could retrace your steps in a revisit! As Yoshi said, though, it's best to experience this as a _dream._ Let the doors take you where they will, let your feet guide you, and you'll have _all_ the SM64 you could ever want. Forever.

Right off the bat, your point about that era of games being kind of creepier than they intended to be, SMB64 was actually one of the first games that gave me legitimate anxiety because the underwater levels terrified me. And they still kind of do to this day. And I was like 16 at the time when it came out. But the feeling of disorientation and the limited controls and general new, unrefined approach towards 3d polygon rendering really made that stuff tense.

To be clear, this is actually VERY different from the original. Still, quite interesting to see someone not know what's different and what's original. To think your memories of this game going forward will be so different from most people's is a bit like a Mandela Effect, which I think is part of the point of the romhack in the first place.

I'd definitely recommend playing this more like an exploration simulator than a standard collectathon platformer. The aim of the game isn't at all to get all of the stars, there are far too many for that to be feasible, getting lost and forging your own paths of areas you want to explore is part of the fun. There is much to explore in the castle. Ps. After collecting a red star, try to explore Marios move-set a little more! (Very exited for part 2)

I remember playing the 2002 Spider-Man game, based on the Sam Raimi movie, having a creepy atmosphere that probably wasn't intended. The first time I booted it up on the PC, I started the Tutorial level. Once the loading finished, I was treated with a black screen with only the HUD that showed the health and the character portrait staring at me. What didn't help was the constant sound of wind and ethereal wooshing that went along with it. I could move the character, as I could hear only footsteps when I pressed the movement keys. Somehow, I managed to make him fall off a building and die, only to be treated with a Game Over. I was shocked to the core, as a child I had now idea this is what I would get from a Spider-Man game. Turns out the black screen was a bug and it was fixed with a patch. But even when I did manage to play this game as it was meant to, there was still something that felt off. The training level is a couple of buildings in an dark, massive room that is empty and with almost oppressive atmosphere. As if it's a simulation, but a sinister one. The early CGI render of Spider-Man felt off, something I couldn't really place. Maybe the eyes are bigger, or the reflections are out of place. And some levels, especially the ones that take place in Oscorp, are really tough and the level design barely makes sense. A very oppressive atmosphere overall. Sorry for the big text, this was something I wanted to share for a long time and found the opportunity to do so.

Also, a few random tips incase you need them for future experiences with the game (if any): - By pressing L, you can play as Luigi instead of Mario or vise versa. - There's a bunch of different variants of the actual castle, some accessible through others. Try to find them all! - I'd recommend trying to play the original Mario 64 to get more of a feel for the controls, you may need that. B3313 is based off of the BETAs of Super Mario 64, and the whole iceberg made around the game.

Damn, haven't seen this hack in while. Gonna leave a few gameplay tips, spoiler free ofc: -The castle hub when you start the game, has separate versions of it, one of which leads to a nightmare sequence if you ground pound the floor. No matter where you are, even if a nightmare sequence is triggered you can use the pause menu button to escape, downside being if you are deep in the castle walls you'll have to find your way back from the start. -nightmare sequences can happen usually on corners of the castle, or on excepcionally long levels, some are fast and quick others are slow and subtle, there are no big jumpscares as far as I remember. -to win the game you have to find and press all of the cap switches, EXCEPT THE YELLOW ONE, those are the red, blue and green. After that, somehow find the actual final bowser world within the castle, which you'll need all caps to beat it, then fight bowser a final time. -i don't remember exactly how many, but each level I think had at least 3 separate versions of itself, each hub cycling throught them, you can tell on which version of the hub you are if the left most door changes from a 1 to a 3. -since you never played vanilla sm64, let's just say you'll notice when you come across objects and maps from the normal game, even if they may be missing some details -have fun! Great video man, hope you play more of the hack.

While the regular mario 64 maps were always a little large compared to mario, this rom hack amplifies it to the extreme, a ton of these environments are uncannily big, they don't feel like they are made to contain humans, definitely giving that backrooms feeling you were talking about.

It's a delightful kind of bizarre, seeing someone with no sm64 experience play this. I would suggest maybe going through the beginning portions of sm64 or looking up a basic movement tutorial? You're figuring things out pretty good as you go but there's all sorts of little things with the movement system, triple jump, backflips, crawling, you seemed to start to understand wall kicks so congratulations on getting that on your own! Also don't eschew the basic ability to Punch things, you'd be surprised what that can work on too.

The number on the doors isnt showing it being world 1 or 2 or whatever. In the original sm64 it tells you how many stars you need to unlock the door. B3313 has majority of the doors already unlocked with some exceptions so you can freely explore as much as you like. There is some you do need to unlock. Especially one door where you need at least 30 stars to unlock. But most of the doors in the romhack are already unlocked from the start

In the M64 intro screen (not unique to B3313), you can also use your glove-shaped cursor to grab mario's face and pull it in different directions to distort it. For the most part is based on the beta build of sm64. There is however a bunch of levels and castle rooms that are fanmade even some few levels that come from other romhacks such as Mottos factory level and the romhack is based on the idea that every copy of sm64 is personalized. This romhack mainly on the newer versions of the romhack where it has a mod where the more you play the levels will actually change and grow larger and more complex the more you play once you grab enough stars

Oh and by the way, if you play this game at night in your time, the game will actually also play at night, and you may also find things have changed in the castle at night...you can see a ghost in the castle sometimes. The castle awaits you librarian.

something really amusing about this hack to me is that i feel it nails the bizarre and uneasy feeling of looking through scrapped beta content of a beloved game. even something really mundane like an unfinished map or scrapped music can feel so unsettling when it's an unseen part of a game so thoroughly searched from top to bottom, also knowing you likely won't get any answers for what bizarre things you might find that the developers chose to hide from the public

Your brand new perspective on this hack makes this such a fun watch. I’ve seen about 5 or 6 people play this game to completion, but I’m not even done watching and your video is one of the best B3313 playthroughs I’ve ever experienced

I’m a couple days late to say this but, the idea of this rom hack is based on the idea of every copy of Mario 64 is personalized and as b3313 (build 3313) it is meant to a beta version or themed as one and has that personalization so as you play it seems to keep adding more stuff even though it doesn’t actually do it, it does a good job emulating it

I love this hack so much. It’s interesting to hear your thoughts about it since the hack relies so heavily on being familiar with the game - even right off the bat the fact that the lighting and animations are subtly off gives the whole thing an instant uncanny valley feel. I’d love to see the alternate universe where you grew up with this game and compare your thoughts there to your thoughts here!

Never in a million years would I of expected you to play b3313! I’m glad you are planning on playing it more in the future as you definitely haven’t even seen close to 10% of what it has to offer both in areas and mind trickery ;) anyways one little tip for you is that you DO NOT look up a map if you get lost as it’ll ruin a lot of the mystery. Instead you should make your own map of the game as you play through it! That’s of course if you feel like doing that though. Whatever floats your boat mr. librarian, have fun!

I think I'm a bit too old for this ROM, as I've never heard of it. Ha, but I was a young teenager when I got my Nintendo 64 when it came out, and I played Mario 64 non-stop! I know the game backwards and forwards, having attained every star and finding all the secrets. So watching you play this ROM brought back a lot of memories... as well as a lot of confusion! I wish I could have played this years ago, but it's cool seeing you go through it now! Thanks for playing it, and thanks for the video!

It was cool to watch you play this. It's definitely meant to be experienced by those familiar with SM64, but your perspective as someone who isn't is interesting in its own way. The idea of B3313 is that it's a lost beta version of the game. It's different to SM64 in both subtle and obvious ways, from small changes like the textures of enemies and how Mario controls, to whole new castle rooms and levels. It builds on some of the ideas from the Super Mario 64 iceberg that got popular a few years ago and reinvigorated the idea of SM64 being creepy. It seems to also have been heavily influenced by SM64 analogue horror series, particularly Greenio's VHS series, which I highly recommend for more of the unnerving B3313 vibe (albeit with more overt themes). As you found out, there are hundreds of stars in this hack and many levels in an almost unnavigable castle, so completing it might not be your goal - but I know that there's still more for you to discover and experience, so I'd love this to become a series. It might be worth playing some SM64 to get an idea of the changes as well.

As someone who grew up watching early smg4 videos, playing super mario 64 ds, and being interested in video game mysteries i found this romhack really interesting and cool. it really iches a the odd version of mario 64 game part of the brain, it also feels like somthing in your dream like the Bernard's door like somehow it got more content and you're exploring new and alien levels. also seeing base levels but done in a very strange way is really creepy to me oddly. enjoyed the video and def checking it out

I would greatly enjoy seeing another episode of you trying to explore this madness. For bowser battles, just spin your movement stick quickly. and I would recommend using ground pound move locations that seem...of interest. I would suggest reading a map if it didn't have spoilers and be EXTREMELY convoluted. I couldn't follow your journey on it, that's how wild it is.

Ok, i have to ramble about the music for a bit (mostly because no one else is) Whoever is behind this hack did a really good job with messing with the original ost, just by listening to it i get the feeling that they took some of the main memorable themes (the main castle theme specifically) and just messed with certain elements in it. Like sometimes its a little faster or a little slower, sometimes the whole song is a key higher or a key lower, sometimes just a handful of notes are just out of tune, sometimes they just straight up play the same song in a completely different sound font (instead of sounding like a violin it sounds like a banjo type of stuff), sometimes they'll clearly take the idea of 1 song from the og soundtrack take a handful of motifs from it, and make an entirely different song out of it just to make it feel like you know what its supposed to be whilst also not remembering ever hearing anything like it. And sometimes its just an entirely new song aside from the soundfont. For those who want to know what the same song different sound font thing sounds like a good example is around the 1:00:00 to 1:04:58 mark. Its the same castle song thats been messed with in every other room, but now instead of orchestral violins its a pan flute esc instrument that's usually used in music in correlation to desert levels in games. I think they might of added a couple extra notes in between the main beats of the original and put it in a slightly higher key, but I'm 95% sure that its the same song. One i can garantee 100% for sure is a different sound font is at 1:07:55 Its playing the song that plays in bob-omb battlefield with the snow levels soundfont. And at 1:14:38 thats once again the main castle theme but with a soundfont of what sounds like a saloon piano. Ok, so after listening back to it the song at 1:00:00 to 1:04:58 is not the castle theme, but is actually the main menu theme in a desert panflute soundfont.

Here's a few useful controls(based on the original N64 buttons because I don't know what you've bound them to): If you hold the Z button and press A, you'll do a high backflip. Press Z while in the air to slam downwards. While running, hold Z and press A to do a long jump. While running, quickly turn around and press A to jump backwards. Whe running, jump three times consecutively to do a high jump. Press A and B at the same time to do a kick.
