Thanks so much everyone! Lots of people put a lot of work into this so I'm glad everyone enjoyed the race! Huge shoutouts to Golden for his amazing job announcing, and all the level creators, players, level testers, hype crowd, people donating, audio people, and GDQ staff that made this another great event! It was a blast organizing this event once again, though it got a bit hectic at times xD Let me know if you have any comments or suggestions for next time! If we are invited back for AGDQ, the current consensus is to make the levels just a touch shorter/easier. We decided on having each team start each level together so that it would make the race more intense. For declaring a winner, with a strict point-based system, one team might win with several stages left to play, which might make those stages a bit less interesting since there's no hope of coming back. An alternative for declaring a winner might be to try something like giving a 5 second headstart on the final level for each level that team is ahead by. So if it's 7 wins to 3 wins, the team with 6 wins would have a 15 sec headstart on the final level (and we can make that one longer/more epic). Then whoever wins the final level is the winner. This would keep it hype to the end, but we'd have an actual winner declared.
A thought I had would be as follows: After a team wins, allow the other team until the end of the life they're currently on to finish that level. A couple times a team was somewhat close behind, and probably could've made it if they'd had a chance.
Jordan (maker of Pit of Three Trials) here! Just popping in to say thanks so much to the guys at SGDQ and to everyone who watched and enjoyed this race. It was a blast to be a part of and I'm really glad so many people tuned in and donated! Thank you all! :D
Gotta give major props to everyone involved in this segment. Everyone was on point and made this among the most entertaining runs I've ever seen from any GDQ event.
This was honestly my favorite part of this SGDQ. So many surprises, clutch wins, the comeback, and some really entertaining levels. I hope Mario Maker's around for years to come.
I like the fact that they do each stage as an indivuidual point, instead of the total speedrun like they did last time. this way there is more suspence.

I do wonder what would happen if we bring Darbian to Mario Maker race. Either he would underperform in a race environment like Mitch does, or, he could destroy pretty much everything like Dram or Kronic. That said, considering Protomagicalgirl's testimony on how he exceeded her own SML1 PB in just 10 hours, latter is highly likely.
I recognise a rule change. Last time the race wasn't decided by points but by whoever beats all the levels first. Well, I'm not complaining, it helps concentrate ^^
Hated the format change, the objective doesn't make any sense at all. One arbitrary segment of play is the only thing that matters and everything else is just wasted effort, totally absurd. It's a race, it made more sense when it actually had a race-like goal in place.
The idea of this format was just to preserve the hype of any team being able to win at any moment, as well as to reinforce that the race itself is the focus and having a definitive winner is a secondary concern. That said, I also think it could have been done better and I expect it'll follow a different format in potential future GDQ Mario Maker races. :)
It sucked that BigJon (GameJ06) couldn't make it because he was sick, he's like the most entertaining speedrunner of all. But the pure skills from KronicSauce just blew me away.
Oops. We realized just before the race that they might be confusing so we meant to remove them. I was running back and forth trying to get all the levels on both Wii U's, and get them uploaded for everyone at home to play, and ended up forgetting to remove them from one of them.
I think this would be more interesting to watch if it was done as a series of blind races, elimination style... 8 racers, 7 stages...last racer to finish each stage is eliminated. Last man standing is your winner. Muscle memory building would be better since there wouldn't be rotations...plus easily scaleable...number of stages is number of racers - 1...
Unfortunately I could not watch it live, but this is the best section of the SDGQ event! I could not wait to see this and am already looking forward to the AGDQ 2017 mario maker race!!!!
I wish this was an event at every GDQ. This was easily the most entertaining event and it's one I would never tire of seeing more of. . . if only they would make it a regular thing!
I don't have MM, but I've been watching carl for a few months now and was told my a co-worker to watch this, and it was amazing! Well done to the teams and to the creators, and all those who supported behind the scenes!
The webcomic Brawl in the Family, which depicts Waluigi in an unusual way. Search for “Brawl in the Family Waluigi” to find a page with a list of comics that he appears in.
@6:44 *both teams getting slaughtered on the first level Commentator: "Carl, you made this level. What do you think of these guys playing it, so far?" Carl: *"I gave them arrows to follow; I don't know what the problem is."* Savage.
Everyone involved in this run has all the respect from me in the world. Golden, who is an absolute amazing announcer and commentator for the segment. He's humorous and just all around has a great personality for that sort of thing. On top of that, kudos to the players and their respective teams. They had astounding communication among each other and that's important with stuff like this. On top of that, uh.. Chronic is a fucking legend. "Yo, if somebody doesn't get this, we're gonna have to call it a draw", and that was all it took for him to just completely shit on the other team and bring it home. I was glued to the screen the entire run, and I don't feel that way too often because often-times the run is something I've seen before in another, and I've grown bored by the time the fun even starts. I loved this run.
Honestly how come they REJECTED Mario Maker Blind Race for the 2017 event!! What are they even thinking? This has been definetely the best part of the marathon, I was looking forward for the next one. Please AGDQ reconsider.
I remember being told by my mother to be quiet during this race, because the last SMM race I was so loud I woke my dad up. Who had to go to work in the morning. xD
can we get this crowd , this announcer and these guys and get one big Mario maker block that's a lot bigger seriously great to watch feels like an esport and would totally watch it as one
They should make this part longer this year. I like the speed rungs, but this had me actually cheering. Chronic's got some seriously impressive skills. Some levels it seemed like he'd played them before.
Yeah, it's not an issue of thinking the sound should be coming from the wrong team's screen. It does seem to work correctly on my browser, though. Just wish I could watch this on my big screen TV instead of my laptop.
Is it possible to contribute with maps to events like this? I have a ton of racing maps because I enjoy adrenaline both on me and on the victims... eh... testers.... So it would be really fun to see someone play them like this...
