Super Mario RPG glitches, tricks, easter eggs, and more (82 in total!) 

I got one. After you rescue Toadstool from Booster, then try to leave Marrymore near the weeding hall, a cutscene will play of all main characters trying to convince Mario to go see the chancellor or they'll be pressed with kidnapping charges. They then start to all get mad at him.

36:45 I think you misread the 4th wall break here. As Mallow and Geno start walking into Mario's inventory, or party menu or whatever it is they do, Gaz calls out to Geno. This disrupts their safe passage into the 5th dimensional hammerspace wizardry RPGs are known for, and causes them to crash into Mario. He shakes it off, naturally, but the psychological effects are still lingering on, as evidenced by him flinching the next time they try to enter. It's actually one of my favorite little blink-and-you'll-miss-it details in the game.

I love the wishes on Star Hill, I remember playing a mod where they replaced a bunch of them and one of my favorites was "I wish Mario would stop skipping me - Mack"

Thanks for this video! I’d like to share something I know of too. 1. For the Easter egg 3, I think there is another variation of dialog when you talk to the keeper on the counter. 2. Before defeating Boywer, there is a toad lady who gets shot after you talk to. If you talk to her after Geno’s out, she gives you a piece of information about where Geno headed depending on which direction she was looking at when she gets solid by the arrow. If she was looking towards the exit of the town, she will tell you Geno went outside there. If the direction was the opposite, she will tell you she couldn’t see him coming to the direction she’s looking at. Also, if you don’t talk to her andget to around center of the town, some another toad lady pops out out of nowhere. She will give younthe same information. 3. The hidden tressure room in the forest changes there contents by whether you talk to the adventurer toad in the toad or not. I remember it was better without talking to him, having more flower than duplicated recovering mushroom, which is pointless to have in a row. 4. In the earlier stage of the game, when you need to jump on the toad in order to get the hidden frog coin, you can talk to the toad and his response changes each time. In the third time, he will be slightly annoyed by you. Similarly, after beating Mack, if you talk to Chancellor, he says kind of ‘I’m counting on you, Mario!’ Like thing(I didn’t beat this game with NA version so not sure of exact quote). But if you talk to him three times, he will yell at you saying ‘Why won’t you go at once!?’ sort of thing. 5. The energetic kid in the Mushroom town runs and closes the door when you talk after Bowser joins, but if you open the door in advance before talking to the kid, although we can hear the door-closing sound after the kid runs, you can actually enter the house without opening; that is, you just enter through the door. 6. After beating the wedding cake, if you hop on the pipe organ, you will be scolded. When escorting Toadstool from the town, if you try to use the other exit which is close to the wedding hall, everyone comes out in a row to pursuade you to sent back the princess first, eventually even including Bowser. If you agree in the progress, it just ends with the member’s happy faces. If you keep refusing and finally agree after Bowser comes out, one comment is added by everyone saying ‘There you go’ like thing. If you disagree to the end, everyone’s mad at you. 7. For the glitch #10 & 11, you can not only swap the skills, but also boost characters’ stats, by applying Geno and Peach’s great grow point to use for other characters such as Mallow and Bowser, since their grow ten to be very low compared to them. These two will grow stronger significantly using this method. Other trivias like you can get a frog coin from the wallet owner, or the shopkeeper gives you a drink after Mallow joins you, entering bucket for the minigame, you can actually miss the frog coin from the shyguy on the railcar seen to be omitted cuz their so trivial but their are just too many of them to list every one of them!! Lol

Thanks to the remake being announced I’m seeing all sorts of Mario rpg videos about secrets and such, which I love, however this is the only one I’ve seen where the narrator actually knows what’s in the toy box and this was 5 years ago so way before the updated graphics. Great job honestly! I’m sitting on a super Mario rpg Easter egg that I’ve never seen anyone talk about and considering releasing that info soon!

I'm so thankful i found this vid. This has been my favorite since I first got it as a kid. I still have it and just started a new game. Although I did know some of these, I had no clue about alot of em. Also, just noticed this is recent. So thanks so much for making this!! The nostalgia is insanely real.

Assuming you know of this, but this is also an interesting glitch with Lamb’s Lure/Sheep Attack: If it’s used to defeat an enemy spawned by a boss - only know of a few in Smithy’s Factory - When the boss tries to spawn the enemy again, the game instead displays the text “Go, World!” each time it attempts to respawn. Since those items are meant to permanently take affected enemies out of battle, it doesn’t know how to answer when prompted to spawn them lol

One easter-egg you missed revolving Mario doing the EXOR Pose. While saving a game, go to a file you aren't playing, and have the menu to overwrite a save to pop up. Select 'No' 30 times and then select 'Yes' finally after specifically 30. When you save the game, Mario's pose goes from the normal Peace-Sign to the EXOR pose. If you fail or do it less then 30, he will look down like we was muted in battle.

Not sure if someone else mentioned it, but if Peach uses the Star Egg, the dancing star animation is slightly different. They gyrate a little faster.

Dry Bones Skip: That encounter is actually a good place to level up quickly if you care to grind. Mallow with Work Pants (for speed?) can let him go first and kill everything (eventually) with one lightning blast. If you saved up Flowers, you can use them to recharge your FP or just use the shop right next to you. Easier than using save abuse to reuse Stars and level up without fighting.

Very cool vid. Definitely decided to add it to my favorites. Like many others, this game holds a very special place for me and I feel your video did it justice and definitely shows how much it means to you. It's just a fun watch. Since you invited us to point out some things you might've missed, there's actually a few more cameos and references that come to mind. Inside Booster's Toy Box with Samus and R.O.B., the character you believed might've been Waddle Dee is actually Diskun, the Japanese mascot for the Nintendo Disk System. There's also red racecar with eyes, which is likely the character known as F-Type from the Super NES game Stunt Race FX. Also in Hinopio's shop, that Arwing is not the original model found in the first game, but is more specially the design found in Star Fox 2, which was in development at the same time as Mario RPG, but ultimately ended up cancelled. The name of the enemy Bahamutt is a play on Bahamut, the King of the Dragons and reoccurring summon from the Final Fantasy series. While Czar Dragon actually takes his names from a super boss from Final Fantasy III (VI). Interestingly enough, this super boss was dummied out in the original release of FFIII, and required a cheating device to access. It seems that Square wanted it to live on in some form. Czar Dragon's second form, Zombone, was also taken from FFIII. Also, in the Forest Maze, you can get as many Frog Coins as you like by jumping on a Wiggler ten times before they're able to retreat into a stomp. It doesn't have to be in a Row, technically, but since they hightail it after the first hit, you can't really mess it up. This is probably why Wigglers are the only enemy to despawn after you run from a Battle with them.

One of my favorite games and there's STILL new things I'm learning about it. Nice vid!

That skill swap glitch is CRAZY! Thanks for sharing it. I just started a new save file so I could try it out. With the glitch, I made Bowser learn shocker!

Great video and very enjoyable. I've played this game for years and still learned a couple things. The only thing I can think of you missed was the "Hello, World!" glitch. Also, Luigi is sad that you didn't show his only appearance in the entire game :)

Great video. I remember most of the easter eggs when I played this game in the SNES, like the frustated apprentice, the bellhop Mario, the kissing scene and so many. The wallet one, if you gave it to him in the early game, he will reward with a Flower Tab and later a Frog Coin.

Awesome video. My favorite one was getting the Super Star and you jumped on the K-9's head within that 2 frame window to get that treasure box. I also don't think I've ever seen Sheep Attack in action so that was a surprise!

If you give Bowser the work pants, almost nothing until Yaridavich can take more than 1 hp from him. Even the bosses in that section are a breeze. Let Mario get killed in the Johnny fight and Bowser can take out Johnny and his lackeys by himself. Also, you will not need a new armor for Bowser until the very end of the game. The work pants have higher defense than all of Bowser's armor aside from the heal shell.

The organ at merrymore if you listen carefully its very simular to the organs you play saving Marie's ancestor to get in the monster hideout a possible chrono trigger reference

47:33 Which reminds me. Exor was without a doubt the scariest and creepiest boss I ever fought in a video game period. The way he moves when you battle him near the end of the game is rather unsettling and creepy and the night sky background during the battle against him doesn't help matters as well. That boss was the bane of my existence for most of the teenagerhood and spawned many nightmares and restless nights. But then again you have mostly have to play through the entire game to see for yourself.

I like how when Mario is peeping on Booster in his balcony after he breaks up the wedding but before he defeats Valentina, he says that he wonders when his next bride will fall from the sky…Sure enough, it comes to fruition.

In Sunken Ship, as Mr. Kipper swims upwards half of the water and air surfaces, time the jump prior to enter the battle one frame before entering the sub-arena, afterwards you’ll end up landing on solid tiles coded while above the water. (You can also walk and run around until you jump to reset the glitch)

A while back I found a weird game crash that involved using a Lucky Jewel in the fight against Smithy. After the battle, the ending scene will have glitchy graphics and will become stuck in the middle of Geno spinning around before he flies away. I might have messaged you on Twitter about this years ago...

I like that the void guy has dkc 2 speed run up while playing mario. Also, that lockout consistently happens on the rom version of the game when changing gear or using items.

Other things to note, the path to the gardener opens up after you reach monstrotown. You actually are given a clue about this from the rat creature there. Also you can get beetlemania rather early, though I don't know what causes the option to get to happen, other than you have to leave the gamer alone for a little while. When you get the game, causes the background of the minigame to change. Like I know you got yours when you had already reached Nimbus land.

Im probably super late too this but for the 4th glitch where you use Yoshi to softlock the game, couldn't you softlock the save file by going to the save block in Monstro Town? Or does that not work too?

on glitch #3 the only save point you dont have to jump on is the one at monstro town in the hole...

Fun fact about working at the Marrymore Hotel. If you try and save the guy says he’s not giving you any breaks but if you stand on the Toads that’s closest to the save blocks head you can jump onto the block and save your game. It’s pointless but it’s an interesting tidbit.

Today, I was fiddling around on a new save file and i discovered a glitch on bandits way. I don't know exactly how to replicate it, but if you jump on a rotating flower, and press a direction and hit jump just before you land on it, the flower will quickly launch you at a shorter distance than usual. Sometimes it will propel you to the other side of the flower, and you can repeat it. Again, im not entirely sure how to do it, the above explanation was what i did but not necessarily how it works, i may have inadvertently done it differently. So far ive only tried this on the first flower in bandits way, and it was on an emulator for android. Anyways, i love the video, smrpg is one of my all time favorite games :)

The first time you go to Kerokero sewers and Mallow shows off how to enter pipes, you can try to leave the way you came and Mallow pops back out to yell at you!

I watched a Super Mario RPG speedrun by Justin-credible, was that you behind him? Great commentary and great video here! I thought I knew everything about this game. It was awesome recently playing through it again, and then I came across this video and was like YES, I can immediately do another play through and discover more! Not doing that 100 super jump challenge tho. I barely got to 30. I'm good with that haha.

Ya know, I'd like to point out that the Quartz Charm, when equipped, is the only item in the game that makes you completely immune to instant-death attacks. The irony in this fun fact is that Culex's next-door neighbor boss, Jinx, is one of the three remaining bosses at that point with an instant death attack on hand, meaning that facing Culex before Jinx allows you to utilize the Quartz Charm to nullify half the difficulty of that fight. Combine the Quartz Charm with the Lazy Shell of course, and Jinx basically can't do shit against you.

When you fight Formless, he will say "duh huh huh" before transforming into Mokura. However, the dialogue text will be misspelled and actually call him "Mokuka" instead of Mokura.

What happens if you level up Mario and Mallow to level 30 and go into Bean Valley early?

Fun glitch i found. Get the Lamb's Lure. Go into the factory and fight a Machine Made Mack. Have everyone else go into defense and try to use Lamb's Lure all 48 times on the Mack in the same battle with Toadstool. Eventually she flies up like when Kalamari's tentacles use their fright attack, except she doesn't come down and no one can do anything. Only way out is to reset the game.

Also when you get peach. In mushroom kingdom of you returned the wallet and talk to him he finds a frog coin in wallet and gives it to you. An old mushroom guy near the inn talks trash about Bowser and Bowser laughs and he says what was that odd noise. This game was genius for it's time

Wanted to point out... with the Yoshi glitch that removes all the controls from you... you actually would be able to save if you went and used the Save block in Monstro Town. I get that the file is corrupt at that point, but maybe there would be some interesting interactions that could be discovered? Possibly worth a try. One trick you missed, in Moleville (I'm not sure how far in the game you have to get before this is possible), it's possible to talk to the mole standing on the bucket over on the left hand side of the map and, if I remember correctly, you either pay it something or bring it an item. Afterwards, the mole will jump off the bucket, and if you jump on the bucket and press down, you'll enter the bucket as if it were a pipe, and be transported to midas river.

what if you save in monstro town where you don't have to jump? also there's quite a bit more goodies to be seen when using game genie, especially kero sewers high jumping over the area where shy away tells you to turn back. you have to scale the wall somehow, haven't gone that far.

I'm so happy to still have that game and my super nintendo. Favorite game of all time!

At 31:31 the wish on star hill says (Wish I could run faster). It's the only one in parentheses. It's In parentheses because Mario doesn't read it out loud, he reads it in his head, so everyone else doesn't hear. Thats because it's his wish. I understand that yoshi also makes sense because he runs in this game, but I think the game developers were thinking about how slow Mario feels sometimes in the old games (not Mario rpg, but the games before it). (Especially if you just got done playing sonic the hedgehog, Mario feels especially slow) Also saying that sonic is faster than Mario was used a lot in the Sega commercials to sell Segas, and the Nintendo company definitely noticed they were calling Mario slow.

Actually the "treasure hunter" wish I believe is supposed to be a guy in Rose Town. The guy who tells you the way to the secret chests path. I can't be 100% certain but I've always thought it was him because no one else ever really mentions a desire to treasure hunt. He mentions it not so directly but it is implied he is a treasure hunter and that's why he knew the secret path in the Forest Maze

After you get Bowser, go to mushroom kingdom and in the lower corner talk to the little toad doing laps. Bowser will laugh and the kid gets scared and runs inside

So the purple smithy is because parts of the textures are missing or broken

Missed the Marrymore Hotel save block bug. Before I explain it below, I must stress that this is *NOT* recommended if playing on a real console as it will *permanently* screw up your game. You might be able to fix it by removing and reinserting the battery inside the cartridge, but it's best not to even screw around with this unless it's through emulation. You have been warned. Okay, so normally you can't save your game in that hotel while you're working as a bellhop. The game will stop you, and you're about to read why. If you jump on the nearby yellow female toads head, you can jump over the trigger for the "no breaks!" text and save the game. What happens is that it screws with how the whole bellhop routine works. Guests will often enter, then just leave. Other times they'll enter, go upstairs, come down and leave. There is no dialog or anything, it's really weird. It still works correctly sometimes though.

There is a STAT trick - there is always 1 stat upon level up which gives you more than the rest. ALSO, you can time and setup your EXP to get the next playable character a the same time in order to level up everyone AT the same time! and every level has the same STAT point which gets an extra bonus. @pidgezero_one I have a list of each characters starting XP and a boss gives before you get the next char, so you can setup.

*Super cheesy EXP exploit* In this game if you and your party have fallen and when you reload you retain all EXP when you continue without quitting to prevent getting stuck. You can use this to your advantage on that first STAR box (and all of them really) Just save the game at a point before you grab a Star Box, grab the star and run into all the enemy's and enter a battle and lose. You can continue and grab the Star again!

It's also possible to save the game when you are working as a bellhop. Jump on the yellow mushroom person's head, then jump over to the save block. Normally you can't save, but with this trick, you can!

Is there any way to fight the monster that seems to only exclusively appear in Pipe Vault that resembles a Sniffit in a camouflage costume? He is incredibly elusive and immediately runs away.

in 4:32 when the guys get is screen lag is becasue is cumputer i know because before that do the same for me many time and when i figth the axem ranger i never beat them because whit the canon att i never see the light and that beug all time and i have to restard to 0 before my cumputer have that problem whit this game i just restard my cumputer again and i never get that problem again in the console that never happen only sometime in a cumputer

4:24 Just found out what happened! Selecting any (hex) equip slot (any slot) sometimes sets some values near the one pertaining to the equip slot selected value to that value! Edit: it's memory corruption. It might lead to ace, i dunno, the glitch isnt common. Probably due to subframes.

I do not know how to change the backgrounds but sometimes beatlemania will have a Super Mario world background
