@@frandestiny8827It really says a lot, when what's seen as "The most distinct game showcasing the best of Square Enix and Nintendo" (Not the BEST, nor the best from EITHER. It's the best involving BOTH) is something that basically became a predecessor to the GBA/DS's other Mario RPG-games. ... Come to think of it, "The best of Square & [company]" seem to be a thing with Square. Kingdom Hearts would come later, a big game and franchise for Sony, and between the 2 games, there were the later Final Fantasy entries. ig Square just know their RPGs... or at least their JRPGs, at the time.

3D Culex has to be one of my favourite bosses of all time because of the build-up and payoff to what was probably one of, if not THE most highly anticipated parts of the remake. The fact that they start with the original 2D Culex and also have him wish that he could be 3D is genius. The payoff of going through all of the post-game bosses before finally being greeted to his stronger, 3D form is such a good mini-story, not to mention that the fight itself is NUTS lmao. It's easily my favourite part of this game
@BlindMelonLord

fun fact, that dialogue about him wishing to be 3D, was supposed to be in the original game. All of that dialogue was kept in Japan, but for some weird reason in the English localization back then in the original version, there was no reference to it. But obviously, in the remake, that’s not the case. They stuck as closely to the Japanese script, while at the same time, keeping some of the classic lines from the Western version. same with Mallow’s “Grandpa”,being called frog sage. He was called that in Japan.

But that’s OK because it may be easier, but the new mechanics are just so much fun to use. And Culex 3D was one of the best boss fights I’ve ever played in an RPG. Here’s that the TTYD remake will be just as good if not, better.

It keeps going! The Wind Crystal (specifically its weakness to Jump) is based off of the Wind Elemental in FF4; the reliable way to get past the tornado it surrounds itself with, is by using your Dragoon's "Jump" ability to soar over the tornado. That's why Wind Crystal is weak to Jump!

I remember when I was speculating Culex's fight, I thought it would've been the same 2D sprite as in the original, another fan argued he'd rather want a full 3D render with the flashy special effects. I'm so glad that we got both right.

I said it in another comment, but what the hell. I’ll tell you as well. Fun fact, him wishing to be 3D is not new. Well… For Japan anyway. Because in the Japanese version of the original game script, he does exactly like he does in this version of the game. He talks about being flat and asks why they’re all 3D, and he ends up wishing he could be 3D. But for some reason, in the original English version, that dialogue was cut and replaced with something else. Thank goodness for this remake, they decided to follow the Japanese script as closely as possible. While at the same time, keeping some of the classic lines from the English version of the script. I loved that they let you swap in different characters mid-battle, because it can keep your roster varied and because it lets the postgame bosses be especially lethal. I loved that they gave all the characters new ultimate weapons. I loved the quality of life changes. It is obvious that the folks who worked on this game loved the original as much as we do. I'd say Culex is a good introductory to the concept of "super bosses" easier than most super bosses in other games but still hard enough to beat your shit. Real hard superbosses like Galdera in Octopath 2 are a nightmare

Hiding my spoileriffic comments behind six line breaks. 5:57 | That's so much damage, in fact, that _Lazy Shell Peach_ still takes ~300. Yeah. Punchinello is where the amateur's lord and savior Lazy Shell stops making fights free, although in the case of Punchinello and Booster, it's still at least a good discount. 6:16 | Punchinello's Grinder does ~260 to Lazy Shell Peach, further factoring into why Punchinello took me four tries and made me PJSalt. 7:04 | I aced that minigame too. Although oddly enough I'd go on to fail Dodo's statue minigame. 7:23, 7:39 | I don't think I saw the trailer in question, so I had no idea the train was even the payload until I got slammed with it myself. My reaction was ... colorful. 8:30 | Unless you have your lineups planned ahead of time, a first Loco Express 023 can leave you trying to do damage control long enough for Booster and the Snifters to slam you with a second train. _(Although it probably doesn't help that my first try at this fight didn't even leave me with enough time to Thought Peek anyone before I died horribly.)_ You managed to salvage this situation pretty well. Congratulations on the recovery. 9:04 | If you need more time thanks to the cake's unblockable AoEs such as Sand Storm, there's a hilariously telegraphed status Peach can use to buy players more time. I, uhh ... had to resort to that. 9:25, 9:42 | Fire Saber and Diamond Saw are the bane of my chain. Those are the two hardest blocks for me to time correctly. 9:43, 9:56 | Game, pls. Some of the bosses could've used special hint pools so you didn't get useless advice like that. 10:50 | Speaking of gimmicks, unless this was patched in between my playthrough and you recording this part for your video, breaking your chain on your own attack is supposed to be punishable with instant death, but it's possible to equip stuff that makes you _immune to instant kills._ And before you ask: No, as busted as the Lazy Shell is, it doesn't give Deathproof. Source: Part 10 of my playthrough, in which Smithy landed an OHKO on LS Peach. 11:19 | All I knew about the Culex rematch going into it was that he got updated to a 3D model and his opening attack reduced your front line to 1 HP. It was still glorious. 11:47 | Because I healed up before starting the attack, I had to see the full 9999 ... but I thought it was pretty cool to see Culex go there for what was supposed to be the hardest fight in the game. 12:12 | Horrible luck there. My jaw dropped when he did his first Special Lock, since Bowyer was *NOT* someone I expected Culex 3D to get inspiration from. 12:32 | Oh, right, I should've expected a Lazy Shell ban up to this point. Fair enough; the Punchinello rematch is the first thing to even remotely _try_ to balance this item out. 12:48 | Probably goes without saying, but the trick to the Spare-us-all is to memorize the turn order so you can time it correctly. Like at 13:09. 13:27 | And if you kill Culex before all four crystals die, the remaining crystals sacrifice themselves to revive Culex. I don't know if his revive HP scales with how many crystals survived up to this point, but since all four lasted Culex's lifebar, guess who had to deal with another 9999 HP? :upside_down: I was able to win on my first try in less than 43 minutes, but with a wrong strategy that extended the fight by several turns. 13:36 | I was so used to not using Red Essences the whole game that I completely forgot about all three of mine in this fight, even though they were on the same page as my Party Bracers and Party Energizers. 13:46 | The lower-tier Colas are great for conserving your [up to] three Kero-Colas too quickly. 14:14 | RIP Culex's Reraise. The fight's less tedious if you do this. 14:20 | Notice that attack was blockable. As soon as you learn the timing, he's sunk. 14:39 | Dealing with 10k HP (20k in my case) can reduce the fight to a slog, yes... 14:57 | OH SNAP you were a lower level than me! I went into the first Culex fight at level 22 _(a little after beating Valentina)_ and the 3D rematch at level 26. Although instead of turning to level grinding, I think it's just I didn't make much of an attempt to avoid fights. Also I over-relied on Mallow's Thunderbolt and an all-in Magic investment complete with the arguably broken _Work Pants._ 15:03 | Going into the postgame I fully expected Culex to be what would make me grind to level 30 ... instead of winning at level 26. Then again the Lazy Shell raises your punching level by several level, once again eluding to why you'd banned it in the first place. 15:22 | I needed 59. _"That is quite a long time."_ Although I attribute my slower pace to using a wrong strategy and my timings being sloppy.
