I worked on the Speed Racer port back in 1994/1995. The reason why Speed Racer was chosen was because Radical Entertainment (the developer) had just finished up the SNES version of the game. Life Fitness was paying for developing the technology, and it seemed like an easy way to get more titles to work with the bike. There were also some other games planned, like a Pacman by a different developer, but I don't believe that ended up being released.

I called many a times. And all i ever got over the phone was SOON.........( i finished the game MANY Times over the first 5 years i had it, ) .. I just rebuilt the bike nov 2022 ( free ) with a bike i found in bulk pickup like 15 years ago , NOw The controllers died Monday ( 1-19-23) and I think i should but the replacement controllers mentioned above.

I know this will sound stupid or something but my old middle school actually had like three of these in a row stored away in a side room of the gym. Every Wednesday we had gym was a free day and so we could just play with all the different equipment there which ranged from SNES to Xbox 360. Good times. School still has no clue how rare those are, might hit them up to buy one from them.

I am genuinely annoyed with gyms nowadays: Why isn't there video game integration into workouts? I get so bored to shit sometimes using those machines which don't even bother to simulate any video of your path. It would be a nifty innovation.

In the late 2000's i went to my mom's Gym and they had a kids section with a PS2 playing Burnout Revenge attached to a workout bike and to make the car go you had to use the peddles. It was pretty fun and would love to try to set that up again.
@KetwunsGamingPad
@KetwunsGamingPad 3 года назад
@@yoanfernanda Oh I know that's a great thing to have an I certainly have that at home and enjoy using it. It's just a shame that gyms don't embrace it all that much and are still living as if it were 30-40 years ago. You can buy new machines all you like, but if they look exactly the same with a new code of paint and a prettier UI, but not actually changing much in function, then it's not that impressive anymore...AR can do so much to innovate exercise again now!

The change in resistance is cool. Cool collectible/conversation piece. If anybody is curious, you could make one of these or an analog of it to get into shape. Realistically speaking you could simply program a modern exercise bike to a program that ramps up with time or has hill profiles. Wire the bike through a switch that kills the game console entirely if the exercise bike screen stops displaying. (They stop displaying after 2ish minutes of inactivity.) Strap on a SNES controller and you're golden. Alternatively just play SNES while riding an exercise bike. If you use a recumbent bike (which I recommend) the need to strap it to the handles goes away.

mmh. Those bike games interest me on a purely technical level honestly. They're not proper 3d games such as Stunt Race FX... They're also not your typical mode 7 racer on a flat surface... They represent some kind of more complex adaptation of mode 7 logic. Which makes some kind of sense, since to even get a perspective effect in mode 7 requires modifying the transformation matrix per scanline... So you could obviously do something more complex per scanline too. I'm just not entirely sure what that would be to result in terrain like that...

Literally no one has gotten to use them as far as I know because "it's too much of a distraction and liability to let anyone use it"

Life Fitness, I've actually used Exercise bikes by them before. Believe it or not, I found those really fun to use (and the least frustrating things at my local gym), especially when the cardio sensors worked correctly. I'd love to use one (as an optional controller) for compatible (but definitely NOT exclusive) racing games; the speed at which you pedal could be interpreted as analogue thrust, and the degree at which you tilt for analogue steering. Two people could get into a contest to out-pedal the other in racing games!

I remember seeing an informercial for this ages ago.... and I recall the thing that stood out for me the most was that it actually used the expansion port of the SNES. (I remember both on my NES and SNES wondering if anything would EVER use that port...). Recently I have been collecting old Genesis/SNES games and that old infomercial suddenly came to mind... so I Googled to see if anyone had ever talked about it.... and came to this video. :) Also, I have a theory about why Speed Racer. Both the games were made by the same developer, and released at the same time. Furthermore, they also both look similar, with that same psudo-3D track design. My guess is that they developed the game engine for Speed Racer/Cannondale (they likely developed it with the intention of licensed games in mind considering that's all they used it for...) and essentially just re-skinned trhe Cannondale game to use in their excersise bike instead of make a whole new game for it.

Yo I went into this retro gaming salon that jus opened up next to this small bowling alley I go to and the first thing that I see is this bike with super street fighter 2 on it. That dude who owns the place was super kind to explain to me what I just saw. Can't believe I saw one of those in real life.

Was there a non-exertainment version of the Mountain Bike Rally game? I'm positive I own that game but I never heard of this bike until now. It definitely wasn't the Cannondale one either. The label art looks super familiar

I've never heard of such a thing. I've heard of Sega's heart rate monitor for the Genesis that worked with a kangaroo platformer game
