This morning I noticed an estate sale nearby that had a 67 Cougar XR7 sitting in a garage for a long time. Come along as I check this uniquely preserved old car.

Thanks for following up Richard. Seems like a decent price for somebody looking for driving quality rig, but not for an experienced collector like you. $16,600 equals about $1800 in 1967 dollars, about half of the XR7 price back then.@@morewhattherust

@@morewhattherust Holy moly. I have a 1967 Mercury Cougar with 289 2bbl, 3spd on floor, all original, but it's not an xr7. Original paint, interior, engine, transmission, 47k miles. I always wondered how much it was worth. Had a guy approach me at a gas station offering to trade me a 1979 El Camino with 305, and I said hell no I'd never trade a 67 Cougar for that ugly thing. This is a video just showing me starting it, with a couple pictures of it at the end ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9is2n9-bEzo.html (The original owner had glasspacks installed on it back in 1967 and they're still on it, so it's loud. Car sat from 1981 to 2005.)

Lottery style barn find to me. A 1967. Dad had one in about 1975, a beauty, black on black, gold trim, 289 auto. We had a bunch of trouble with the relays operating the tail lights. I learned alot about wiring then at 9 years old. I helped him rebuild the c4 on it on our picnic table. Could never get it right so he swapped over to a manual. Mom was upset cause she could not drive a manual. Mom was also at home from a hospital break dealing with terminal cancer. Came home from school and mom was estatic that she got so mad she went out and learned to drive it herself all alone instead of watching general hospital one day. Mom passed soon after and i'll never forget that car and always want one of my own.

That XR7 was just stunning in that condition and that beautiful green color. Those cars go for huge amounts of money in automatic form let alone a super rare 4 speed. I would easy guess that someone would have to big over $25,000 easy for that car. I would have bought that beautiful Buick Regal myself for $2,500 and be done.

$16.6 K was all the money on a vehicle that has been off the road many years. Probably $5 K to make it roadworthy if you can do the work without shop fees. So you then have $21.5 in a car worth $25K on a good day.

My mom bought a 1968 Cougar new, the first new car she ever owned. It was the base model with the 3 speed. They didn't change much between 1967 and 68, if any at all. Hers was blue with a blue interior. Beautiful car. But then my brother came along and they traded it in for a 1971 Galaxie wagon. Family grows, the toys disappear....lol. Amazing find! I had a fully tricked out 1968 cougar that I put a cammed up police interceptor in. A drunk driver with no insurance hit it and totalled it. The only difference between the 67 and 68 is that the 68 had lights on the rear quarter panels and the 67s had Cougar badges. It came with a 302 but I put a 351 Windsor in it,the 302 was shot. I've owned Cougars since 1977. This is a very nice barn find type car, a 1967 XR-7, from what I can see, sparsely optioned (AM radio, console power steering, probably WSW tires and that's it). IIt has a 3-speed manual transmission, not a four-speed. Could clean up quite nicely for a daily driver but would need quite a bit of work, basically a full restoration, to bring top dollar. However, the better ting might be to leave it as original as possible when cleaning it up to "survivor" condition. This dark green/tan leather color combination was the advertising "feature" color combo for the mid-year introduction of the XR-7 model. Assuming it had no rust (I didn't see any more than surface rust), I'd have bid on it.

Just sold a 69 XR 7 two weeks ago. You forget to check to see if the carb/carb linkage was seized when you saw the engine was tight. And you could have lifted the floor mats and checked underneath the car to see if there were any rusted floors. I ran my ad and someone sent me a message telling me to immediately delete it and redo the ad starting at $3500 for the car I had. It went to a good home. Was totally happy how it all turned out.

I would have snatched up that Regal, those G-Bodies are a REALLY popular build as a daily driver/weekend fun car, The Aftermarket makes the bumper fillers and corners that were rubberized plastic but they are fiberglass now and last much much longer, and noone really cares about the V6 because in all honesty they were better than a V8, they were ALOT more relible and they only produced 10 HP less (130) than the 307 did (140) and there was no other option, the only G Body that came with a 350 was the Monte Carlo SS, The base Monte, Regal, Cutlass and Grand Prix came with 3.8 (231 CID) and 305/307. and that 10 HP was VERY easily made up with some minor tweeking.

The frame behind the rear wheels tells all with the G Body vehicle's like Regals Cuttlasses Monte Carlos and Pontiac Grand Prix..I had a 4door 84 Buick Regal same color as that one with a solid body..I noticed 4 bolts in the trunk with 2 on each side years later and they were holding up the frame so it wouldn't drop. The car had 70 thousand miles on it when my dad first bought it and I'm guessing the frame started rustng in 2005 or before cause of how the frame was bolted to the body..I don't understand why the car had everything Z barted except for the frame. It's something to look for when buying one of those car's. If I'da known I could've bought frame rails for the rear part of the frame I'da kept the car cause it was solid everywhere except for the rear frame rails..I know where a Cougar that same color and everything is that came factory with a big block 4speed..Now it's a 302 automatic transmission and it still has the clutch pedal in it..I'm pretty sure he's wanting 30k for it but it's not original but nice car. I could've bought it in the mid 80s for 1200 just because it didn't have the the numbers matching engine. It's got the 4speed transmission but it's hard to tell what happened to the engine that was factory..I remember when it first came around with the big block and it ran good. I'm thinking it came with a 428 engine. It ran pretty good with the 302 but nutn like it use to lol..Ain't many Cougars left cause the rear leaf springs would rust through into the trunk. I think I'd look under it before I'd get to interested in it. It appears to be solid but ya never know until ya look it over really good

Hi Richard, greetings from Scotland. A nice car indeed. As the video progressed, I started to think that ( at least for me ) it wasn’t one that I personally would have bid on. Basically it’s too modern for my taste, and as nice as it is, it doesn’t get my juices flowing. Therefore in my humble opinion you made the right call…albeit for different reasons. Had it been a Challenger e.g. ‘Dukes of Hazard’ then I’d would bite your hand off for one of those. It kinda defies my original logic about the car but c’est la vie… I guess I’m more ‘old school’ in my tastes. Some of these new battery powered vehicles ( e.g. Tesla ) you know…the ones with no chrome..🤮🤮. I’m developing into a grumpy old man. Cheers John.

So you didn't bid. I'm sure you know what it went for. Could you share it with the people who watched your video?

It is in the first comment, $16,600. The bidders are not told of the final amount (it is a silent auction), but I was able to gain the info a few days after the auction ended.

I would have like to have stolen it for 8 grand as it sits with a title. My max would have been 10 grand though regardless. Sure be nice to know sales price.

I'll see if the estate sale manager will tell me what the final price was. Sometimes they will not disclose it.
