Hi friends on the internet!
My name is Tiffany, and I'm a UX Researcher based in Long Beach, CA.
Based on some of the comments in the past few videos, how to get your feet wet into UXR seemed like a popular topic - this was certainly one of my top interests when I made my career switch into UX, so I wanted to make a video sharing my super duper personal tips that the UX books won't tell you.
If you're out there looking for all the resources out there looking for ways to get into UXR, I feel you. I really really really feel your pain and passion, and I want to help where I can - if there's anything I can help answer for you, comment below and I'll be sure to get back to you.
Disclaimer: My videos are meant to broaden perspectives, NOT to educate you on UXR (I have so many recos and resources if anyone is looking for that!) I'm still learning + growing in this field, and my videos are created with the purpose of sharing my life with those who are interested in pursuing this field.

What do I qualify for? Entry level? I don’t even know how to get an interview. I have a bachelors in psychology and one semester from a masters in UX/UI Design & Development. I graduate in May and plan on going for a doctorate in AI/ML Only work experience I have is 2 years of managerial experience at Walgreens and 3 years of STEM teacher experience in middle school

Hi Tiffany, thank you for sharing these tips! As someone who is breaking into ux research, what methods do you think it is most useful and valuable? lastly, I would love to know what podcasts that you found helpful!
@Tifffster
@Tifffster 2 года назад
Hey Justin! Thanks for watching and those are great questions. ☺️ The methods selected and found useful will differ significantly based on the questions you are trying to get answered, but the top methods most commonly and widely used in tech are 1) user interviews, 2) contextual inquiry, and 3) usability test. I’ll create a more detailed video soon! There’s a ton of UX related podcasts out there and I have been listening across a lot of different ones! The ones I can think of are: UI breakfast and Nn/g UX podcast! Hope that helps! :)

I have a PhD in cognitive developmental psychology, so I have over 10 years of research experiences. However I have no UXR experience! If I were to take a bootcamp or coursera would I be considered entry-level or not? 🤔
@Tifffster
@Tifffster Год назад
Hello! All your background in PhD + other fields of research will definitely count towards your years of experience. I don’t even think you need to take a bootcamp. Your background totally qualifies for a senior role in UXR! LMK if you have another question!
@Updog89
@Updog89 Год назад
@@Tifffster Wow that’s really a huge relief to hear! I have seen a few senior positions but usually they do specify X number of years specifically in the UX and/or product development spheres. Basically I’ve studied how little kids learn at science museums for a decade. I wonder if it still makes sense to take a Coursera or similar course in UX before I start applying given how different academic research is? Or is that my impostor syndrome speaking? My research area was very “niche”, so my lack of experience outside it gives me pause! Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my questions, you are so kind!
@Tifffster
@Tifffster Год назад
@@Updog89 ah yeah, some companies require specific UX experience, but I think the ideal first step is to find a role that doesn’t require it, that’s more focused in foundational, generative studies and grow your experience in more UX centered skillsets there. I personally think people with other fields of research are perfectly capable of transitioning into UX without downleveling themselves. Yeah I think those mini classes will help you get familiar with the terms we use in UX, how collaboration in tech works, etc., so definitely will give you an overview & a UX 101!!

Hi there! Would you suggest taking UXR courses? I have a B.A in Political Science and Sociology with a business certificate!
@Tifffster
@Tifffster 2 года назад
Hello Ruth23! Based on my experience, practicing UXR definitely requires some education of some sort - whether it be self taught over the internet, through a degree, thru a bootcamp, etc. Here’s my review of the General Assembly bootcamp: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cJOZPUL4gt4.html You have a great background/majors, but in order to take on a role in UXR, you need to learn how to utilize the research methodologies, how to speak the product language, etc., and actually practice some projects on your own too. Before you commit to any paid programs, I highly recommend you look at free resources online, such as N/ng and Google certificate. Make sure you follow @aonatalks too - Aona is awesome at sharing her knowledge and teaching UXR! Once you’ve learned the basics over the internet and want to learn more, I would recommend starting to look into some Master’s program, but it’s not required to get a job in UXR.

Hi thanks for this video. What are possibilities of getting a job as UXR with absolutely no graduation????
@Tifffster
@Tifffster 2 года назад
Hi Harry! Can you clarify what you mean by no graduation? - No bachelor degree or master’s? Bootcamp? I don’t have any master’s degree, and while it took some time to learn on my own + practice thru case studies + develop portfolio, it was definitely possible! I’ve seen folks without any form of bootcamp/degree but it definitely takes some time to start somewhere small and grow experience over time and learn on the job!

Hi Tiffany, thank you so much for all your useful tips! How did you find a UXR contract position? I was personally contacted by some UXR staffing agencies on LinkedIn but I wasn’t sure if they were reliable. Thanks and hopefully I can find my opportunity soon to get my feet wet🙏
@Tifffster
@Tifffster 2 года назад
Hey JP! thanks for your comment, and glad these were useful tips :) There are tons of contracting companies out there, but I was introduced to mine via another UXR I networked with on LinkedIn. One was a local agency named Digital People with roles mostly in Minneapolis, MN, and another one was with Synergis Creative (many roles in the bay area but national I believe!) Synergis Creative had reached out to me before, the recruiter and I connected briefly, and then she reached out about an opening I ended up accepting! I'm planning on creating a video specifically about finding a contracting UXR role, what to discuss, etc., so be on the lookout!
