Some of these features have changed in the new Super Retro Trio Plus variety. It now runs off of HDMI, and the SNES-Style controllers actually have SNES controller ports. You can also use the Super Game Boy and whatever that thing that allows the Megadrive to play Master System games is called.
I've had mine for a year and it's had maybe 3-4 hours of use. I went to test it yesterday and two pins popped out of the NES slot, and another was really loose. The Retro Bit had shown signs that the pins were not sturdy after the first use, but I didn't expect three of them to just pull right out.
I have the same issue with the NES cartridge slot. Several pins fell out, and a few got bent. A better pin connector wouldn't have done this. You can solder in a replacement, but that's not the point. Thanks for sharing your issues. 👍

I just watched the half hour long video comparing the Super Retro Trio with the Retron 5. Holy sh*t, and I was all set on getting that Retron 5 for the added GBA capability, and not even thinking the oddly shaped controllers would be an issue. I thought it would be fully hardware based with no menu, no emulation, no ANDROID?!?!?!!!! Well, I've got me a GPD XD Plus for that nonsense, thank you very much!!! Helps to do your homework, bros!
@@WraithTDK I'm not sure if the Hyperkin is doing any of this (apparently they used to, but I'm not sure if they still are), but you can misuse open source software by violating its licenses. While some of the more liberal licenses (such as MIT, BSD, etc) aren't particularly restrictive (they typically require you to display their license, acknowledge that you're using their code, and act as disclaimers), one of the most basic requirements of the GPL requires third-parties to publish any modifications made to the source code. If Hyperkin is using a GPL-based emulator in the Retron 5, improving upon it, and refusing to distribute the source code, they are violating the software license. Furthermore, the GPLv3 takes an additional step to prevent the practice of "Tivoization," which is the act of blocking the users from running custom software on a piece of hardware. If Hyperkin is using GPLv3 software and preventing users from being able to modify the versions of said software on the Retron 5, they are violating the license. Suffice to say, even in the open source world licensing can be kind of a tricky subject.
+Xelos Are the standards really that low nowadays? I would've been surprised if I saw a 5-10k channel with this quality, but above 50k it should be a norm.
+Rerez Cover the SupaBoy! It's a portable SNES with every single ability that the original SNES has, including plugging in SNES controllers, even though it has all the SNES buttons.
The image quality looked absolutely horrible! I couldn't see the stripes on the ground in Super Thunderblade for example. Did you capture with s-video? It looked like really, really bad composite. Personally, I think composite should be illegal. And interlacing, too. Does it to 240p or is everything 480i? How does it sound? Did you try Virtua Racing?
I remember meeting you at TooManyGames last year and not being subscribed to your channel. Now I regret not having been subscribed to you in the past, because your videos are great. I especially love videos like this, where you review actual hardware. This and the controller videos are among my favorites. I just received one of these yesterday. Unfortunately I bought the NTSC version without realising it has issues with some PAL snes games. Still its a great little system, special mention to the excellent pads, probably the best Ive seen on a clone system
I love this system, two things. One, everdrives work great on it. Secondly for pal region NES games, the region switch at the front is for Genesis titles, so pal Nes games run too fast, which is the only downside.
Seems like a good clone console. I find the biggest issue with clone consoles is compatibility with games and this one doesn't seem to have that problem.
love how you find very rare games and consoles that most have never seen or used before being a big gaming nerd i've owned most of the gaming consoles that were worth owning owned every Sega system except the master system but have played one before and every Nintendo system wish I didn't sell my Wii U
Very informative review. I like some points that were brought up, such as the console-switch being a bit wonky, since it has to go through each system before you get to the one you want to play. Here's how it's been working for me so far; In my (fairly short) time with the system, most things have worked great. The controller feels great, the design of the console is sleek and appealing, and the fact that you can use the original controllers is pretty awesome. The games feel very authentic, unlike what they would feel like if they had been emulated. Only problem I've run into so far is with the Japanese version of "EarthBound", Mother 2. The game loads, and technically does what it's supposed to, but unlike some SFC-games, the copy protection checks for the console's region, and unless it detects a Super Famicom... you're pretty much screwed. There's just a static screen with the message "THIS GAME PAK IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH YOUR SUPER FAMICOM/SUPER NINTENDO ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM" Or something similar. This isn't the worst thing ever, but it does make the statement found on the FAQ-page on the website false -- "It can play NES, SNES, and Genesis games from any region with the use of the region-switch on the front of the console." All-in-all, pretty great console. Very authentic to the original hardware, and has an overall great design. Buuut, it does *not* play games from all regions. Some games simply seem to be out of the question.
Good luck finding a newer TV with S-video inputs. I though I was lucky to find a Magnavox flat screen with three S-video inputs 12 years ago. Don't get me wrong, S-video is a great signal for older consoles. I'd like to know what were they thinking when they chose S-video over an HDMI port.
Edit: Yes, I recommend an official SNES controller to play SNES with this. The default controllers have lag on SNES games; not so much on Sega Genesis. Still have mine; had it as a Christmas present 5 years ago. If you use an upscaler device like the RetroTINK-2X Mini (highly recommend if you are an LCD user), you can get a crisp picture out of S-Video and less input lag. I am experiencing a problem with a 6-button Genesis controller playing SNES carts and Super Gameboy though -- there is still a delay from pressing a button when using the stock controller or a Genesis one (through the port at 2:00). It's most noticeable when playing games where you do a lot of button tapping/jumping, like Daffy Duck: The Marvin Missions on GB. Genesis games (except Virtua Racing) on this play great, with minimal no lag at ALL despite some dark colors and distorted audio, but sounds far superior to ATGarbage systems. It has a strong, hard plastic smell too. I will be getting an official SNES/Famicom pad to see if the lag is removed when plugging it into the Super Nintendo controller port, as opposed to using the stock pad in the Genesis port. Other than that, good classic unit.
Honestly, what they should do for the retro Quattro, either the expansions available for the systems, and the ability to add those attachments, for example, sega cd and 32x built in, and the ability to add the exercise bike thing to it manually, or master system, famicom and super famicom capabilities
Is it made by Hyperkin? The people that put out the Retron 5? That company is in a whole bunch of legal hot water. Basically for stealing emulation tech & not only not crediting the ones who createdit, but also profitting off of someone else's tech.
danielexplosion. Late response but no, Hyperkin doesn't make these consoles. Bit makes them and they have a good track record of clone machines. They are the competitors of Hyperkin. Bit made the Duo to answer to the Retron 3 and this answers to the Retron 5.
actually this is misleading, I have the Super Retro Trio and the super mario bros NES game had noticeable sound issues where the sounds was not accurate....
According to the Amazon reviews, it has some long-term defects that make the system prone to breaking down, such as faulty cart doors and improperly soldered ports. A modder could have ALOT of fun modding this system.

Well, I love your happy, bouncy attitude in your videos, your review was amazing, and I've just bought this myself (the non-plus version without HDMI...I have an '85 CRT and who needs the HD output on these oldies? This isn't a PS4 or an XBOX TB1, it's pixels XD) I've been buying knockoff clones for a while, and this is going to be my first-ever actual well-designed hardware buy. My Retroad HD Mega Drive just sizzled into Russian circuit board vapor a few days ago, and that darn thing was in HD and felt reliable...I should have listened to that cheapo plastic, that clicky reset button, that 1/100th ounce console weight, but NOPE!!! All I saw was the glorious quality even when using the AV mode, the perfectly functional wireless RF controllers, the built-in games, GAHH!!!!! RETROAD HD MEGA DR...FFFFFFRRFHRHFHGHFHGHGHFGHGFHG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SO FREAKIN' AMAZING!!! Anyways, you've got my sub, you have the attitude and presentation of a natural born entertainer in my opinion :) I guess it's time to see what other videos are crammed onto your channel that I've been missing.
i like that it has a dust cover for the controller ports on the front thats a pretty good feature i have to admit if i get back into nes/snes/genesis collecting i would buy one of these definitely due to the small size and not having to have all 3 systems... sure i wont be able to use a sega cd but there is only a couple sega CD games i would want to play so i dont see it as a big deal... mostly because i dont want to deal with repairs of the sega CD hardware if something breaks down due to age... like busted capacitors for example

I already have a Retron5 so I don't really need the Retro Trio but I love that Cool Blue Controller it has so I'm currently trying to contact Retrobit in order to see if I can order one separately.
The real trial by fire for NES clones is Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse, since it has a lot of weird chips that many clone systems don't understand. How would that perform on this thing?
There's also Hyperkin's Retron 3 which I myself own. It came with 2 Wireless infared controllers that completely suck so I use the controllers made for the original systems. Hyperkin now has the Retron 5 released which can not only play NES, SNES and Genesis games but also GB, GBC and GBA games.
yes but the retron 5 has a lot of problems and you'd be supporting people who plagiarized allll of the software on the console without giving a cent to the creators
ah true sorry missed that part. Well if your's has been good for you then great! as for me i received it and enjoyed it for about 3 months before both the NES and SNES ports stopped working. it may have just been mine but it was very disappointing. Other than that though the only real selling factor for me were: The wired and 1 to 1 replicas of the SNES controllers that will work with all three systems, and that the ports are around the front instead of awkwardly to the sides. The retron 3 has those god awful infrared controllers that come with it and make most of the games unplayable until you put up more of an investment to buy the original controllers. The ports seemed to grab quite a alot almost an alarming amount. Though they never ruined a game like the retron 5. And although this is a knit pick but after using the trio it's very sad to not have the ability to use Genesis and SNES controllers for all 3 systems makes for alot less changing the controllers over and over again.
It's not bad and seems to play everything I throw at it, but the sound on the SNES side is loud and distorted. Mr. Do, for example, is so loud I have to turn the volume down to almost zero and it was very distorted sounding.
I've experienced the same with RETRO TRIO Console. I have the same issues with Maui Mallard in Cold Shadow, and Zombies Ate My Neighbors. I've heard that the version of the Retro Trio, with SNES Control ports for the packed in controller, is Version 2. And unfortunately, the SUPER RETRO TRIO PLUS, with HDMI, has kept those same issues of Distorted SNES sounds. So I too am trying of finding the original version of the SUPER RETRO TRIO, with the packed in controllers using the Genesis control port, instead of the SNES control port. Because, that's to likely have all the games, mostly the SNES side, having it in its original clear quality sound, rather than the poorly distorted sound in all of the versions of the SUPER RETRO TRIO since.
The Super Retro Trio certainly seems like an ideal choice for playing original NES cartridges. It has the composite video of the VCR style model while eliminating the flimsy VCR style design. However, I've heard it cannot play games with the MMC5 chip, although I do know that at least one of those games with that chip can be downloaded via the Virtual Console. I personally am in no hurry to invest in getting NES games or consoles. I don't believe it was very well known here in Australia at the time and the hardware is too problematic for me to justify the purchase. If I do decide to try some NES games, I'll start with those on the Virtual Console. As an alternative to the SNES and Sega Mega Drive, I couldn't recommend the Super Retro Trio. Not only does it not support those accessories you mentioned, but it doesn't support the RGB SCART, which is the best video quality you can get out of those two devices. I have both original systems hooked up via RGB SCART to HDMI and it looks like I'm playing them on the PS3!
um the newest model does indeed work with those games chips.. and with a simple mod that most people used for the SNES you can indeed use the skart output. so what I'm hearing is you make excuses to not get a great system
Kind of wish the Genesis port was the last one, cause if the hardware is correct the Power Base Converter should work as well (it was really just a pass through connector).
+Theo Winters There's Power Base Converters everywhere now, that big chunk of thing is not a problem. Stone Age Gamer had a Power Base Mini that would allow you to play SMS games on any Sega Genesis and its clones and that also works on the SR3 as well.
Retro-Bit has announced an HDMI version coming this holiday season. It will be 720p for HD and have both HDMI and standard AV outputs. I don't know about S-video. They gave the info on their Instagram account - @retrobitgaming. Judging from the photos, the US version will be red and white. The PAL edition (for Europe) will be blue and black.
@Dank Memes It's more for convenience than the quality. It's easier to have everything hooked up to one Tv via HDMI. PS2 already takes up the composite cable slots on my TV.
@@alicestickney1602 I use component for my PS2, looks better. I'm one of those people who doesn't mind a console needing multiple cables. I only ordered the regular Trio, not the Trio Plus, and I'm all right with its look.
@@ElijahRulz But the 32x just uses the Mega Drive's game slot. That's what's in this console. So there's a chance it could work, since this device uses hardware instead of emulation.
I can see why they did the power the way they did. If each slot had it's own power button, how do you prevent turning on multiple at the same time? Even if there was a switch to select the slot and a single separate power button, how would it handle switching slots while the system is on? Personally, I'd have liked a knob you turn to what slot you want to run, and then pushing the knob down locks the knob in place and turns on that slot. That is a bit more intuitive to me.
I just got one. the nes side displays colors all off and distorted where the yellows greenish and the browns are completely green. the other colors are just washed out. the sound is normal, however. I think mine is defective because I haven't seen my particular problem on any feedback for the sr3, and I'm waiting for retro bit to contact me back. the Sega portion works perfectly. the SNES displays like normal but the sound is loud and harsh.
I had one of these systems from when it was first released. Like you said I didn't find a game that didn't work on it but as some other have mentioned the NES sound was wonky. For example, throw in a copy of Double Dribble and listen to the national anthem. Just weird. That said, I traded mine in for some store credit and purchased all original systems but this is still a good choice for people who just want to play some retro games.
If you do decide to play Startropics and you don't happen to get your hands on a complete in box version of it... you might run into a problem. There is a point in the game where you are supposed to take a letter that came in the box and get it wet in order to display a hidden code that you have to enter to continue. I remember doing it as a kid and I THINK the code is 747. Might want to double-check that though, my memory from when I was like 11 probably isn't that great... It is a fantastic game though!
Nice review, I could really one of these even though I already have a SNES. Do you need an adapter to play games from other regions? Because I own a PAL SNES game that I bought a while ago not knowing it was PAL.
