Three 16-Yr.-Old Rubber Trees
Yield 2.6-Kg. Latex Per Tapping
There are three large and tall rubber trees in my farm which were among the hundreds planted 16 years ago which could offer hope to Mindanao rubber tree farmers who had long suffered from low farm gate prices.
The biggest of the three trees produces an incredible 1.4-kilos each tapping which is done with a one day interval or 15 times in one month.
The second most prolific tree yields 700 grams per tapping while the third consistently produces 500 grams every other day.
I discovered the incredible yield of these three trees last Sunday, a day before I broke my arm in a freak biking accident after I talked to our rubber tapper, Jun Canon.
A tapper is a rubber industry worker who is equipped with a special tapping knife used in wounding the bark of the rubber tree which results in the production of a sap called latex.
When processed, the latex is used in the production of many rubber products, including airplane and car tires, medical gloves and condoms.
These trees came from the clonal materials brought in from Malaysia by my Sabah-based friend, Siew King Han, when I was Governor of North Cotabato.
The clones that we produced from Han's seedlings were named MP Series 2000 and I planted about 1,000 in my farm and shared the rest to other farmers.
I had earlier instructed the tappers to identify which trees are the most prolific producers among the MP Series 2000 so that these could be used in clonal reproduction.
The discovery of the prolific latex producing trees comes at a time when Mindanao rubber farmers are faced with a very low farm gate price of P25 per kilo of latex, down from a historic high of P100 when I was Governor.
What makes the farmers' problem worse is the fact that many of them planted old clonal varieties with very low latex production.
With this newly discovered Super Clones, there is hope for the farmer to earn more because he will have a higher yield per tree from the same area and same density.
This means that if a farmer uses these Super Clones of MP Series 2000 and an hectare of rubber trees will have a population of 400 trees with an average yield of 800 grams per tapping every other day, the farmer will harvest 4,800 kilos every month.
Even with the very low farm gate price of P25 per kilo, 4,800 kilos would earn the farmer P120,000 per hectare per month.
I have already pruned the three prolific rubber trees so that these would grow young branches and twigs to provide us with the young and active bud eyes for clonal propagation.
