I have no favorite (don't like brawl tho), but the first game has this very special 'atmosphere' for me. Playing the first one is just so much fun because of the fact that I could play as my favorite Nintendo character Mario against my brother's Link and his friend's Captain Falcon on Pokéflats. It is just so awesome those very different series clashes and have those very different characters with different art style, emotions and animation fight against each other. That was just so unique. Mario and Luigi's happy voices and silly expressions, doing the tornado/cyclone against the grumpy fox or the aggressive realistic human character Link is priceless. The second game took quiet a bit from this atmosphere away, most of the characters now have expressions which fit for fighting. thus Mario now has a more serious expression instead of a happy one, most characters now have much more serious expressions and thus this dims down the uniqueness of having those series clash together as everyone now more blends in together. It seems more natural to me for e.g. Mario fighting Captain falcon as they now both have the same expression. The atmosphere still is present in Melee due to both games having voices from the same source (the N64 games). thus Mario and Luigi still sound happy and Link still sounds aggressive and there is still a bit of the silly animations over when cartoony characters get hurt. Brawl got completely rid of the atmosphere, Voices and animations got redone for every character to fit more naturally when fighting thus now cartoony characters especially Mario are dull. no more 'yahoo's or 'yee aah's but boring grunts and frowning and teeth clenching. Now it seems completely normal for Mario to fight Solid Snake or Ike. The characters now have no uniqueness anymore aside from C.Falcon. The personality's are dumbed down so much and now every character blends in together with the same art style that it even feels like that they belong to the same universe. It isn't special anymore.
The N64 one was really innovative, and is fun to play for nostalgia every now and then. Melee had a lot of exploits in the game which led to a skilled competitive fanbase. Brawl upgraded every aspect of the series and made it more accessible to new players. Sadly it's ignored by most Melee fans only because it was over 6 years between games and these people are too stubborn to play a new game. Still, there are competitive Brawlers, and because of all the improvements, I'd say it's the best.
Wow, really good opinion on the games. I agree like 100% with you. I thought they were kinda lazy with SSBB with the intro by just using SSE cutscenes. I actually liked the duplicates because it allowed more characters to be in the game, and I was actually kinda mad that the characters from Melee were not in Brawl. If they make a new one, I hope it is a good mix of the 3. But I doubt we will get a new Smash game for a loooong time, if ever. Once again, good points.
Well, whatever, what if instead of fighting each other if meele is better than brawl or not, we try defending this game series? because other players from other fighting games doesn't take us seriously. Lots of people don't even consider Brawl and Meele fighting games.
nuz u understand that all 3 games are just better adaptations of the previous games and your personal preference does not matter in the end. i like mele the best of the three simply because i logged the most time on it but i still enjoy all of them so getting all worked up about which is better is kinda pointless, i just watched this vid to see how things have changed form game to game and thats pretty spectacular
It has a nice nostalgic feeling that I enjoy over brawl. But the music is definitely better in brawl. Considering so many Melee songs made it into brawl its basicly the same with some more added.
To me, Melee is my favorite. I love the designs in the game. The stages and the music is just fantastic and I simply love finding all the glitches. Brawl is got to be my least favorite out of all the games, but I still play it a lot.
I have to say it has to be between super smash bros 64 and melee because they were both the most fun. I remember playing the N64 version ALOT more though with friends when i was younger, ill never forget the tense fights i had the with the hand at the end of the game !
in my opinion. i kinda liked the final smashes as well, because most fighting games have some sort of final attack you deal to finish your enemy. what's annoying though is if someone keeps dying, they automatically get a final smash upon respawn.
I like them all equally cuz they are unique in their purpose SSb64 - the original, the classic SSBM - fun, crazy, great character roster, amazing galleries SSBB - balance, good adventure mode, lots of great tracks
Working on the N64 was excruciating, it really is something that is difficult to imagine doing. If nothing else, remember that the PS2/GC/Xbox are capable of over 100 times as many polygons as the PS1/N64.
I still got my N64 & Gamecube. & I am train'n my nephew Chris & show'n him all 3 versions of this awesome game franchise. I even created all the classic stages from the original 64 version on Brawl & I even brought back a few created stages from Melee.
Brawl, out of all three, has the most advanced engine, using technologies such as Havok Physics (making it the first Nintendo game to use Havok). But all three are good, with no "best" or "worst".
There was never a greater diffrence in graphics between two consecutive console generations than between Nintendo 64 and Nintendo Gamcube. It was such a big step in terms of graphics, as you can see in this video.
Super Smash Bros.: The original start to the epic Smash Bros. series ^_^! FIlled me with many memories =D Melee: Had the best intro IMO (Brawl just used clips from the Subspace Emissionary mode). And expanded upon the single player mode =)! Brawl: Expanded on the gameplay overall and had a very unique and lengthy story mode =D! All 3 games are equally great ^_^!
I'd say Brawl is my personal favorite, but I wouldn't say it's "the best", in fact I'd say that they all have different things that each particular instalment in the series does well in. The original has the nostalgia and simplicity factors; Melee has it's more competitive (apparently) gameplay and individual target tests; Brawl has the great music, really clever stages (and stage builder) as well as the largest character selection. So they're all the best in their own seperate ways. :)
I don't know anybody who prefered Melee for the intro. But the reason they prefered it is because it had a lot more advanced techniques like wavedashing you metioned. But it also had increased hitstun and shield stun, which were essential for comboing. They consider Brawl more of a n00bs game because of the slower physics and the advanced techs taken out. But Melee is still one of my fav. GameCube games to date.
OK, those are the good things but a few points: 1. Graphics Don't make a game. 2. Having a bigger roster means more difficulty choosing. 3. Have you actually extensively played the first game? If you haven't I hope you do and like it better than the other 2 combined
it's evident in the soundtrack that they started with a pretty nice techno-midi style of music, typical of video games, giving us nostalgia and fun but then it gradually evolves into some opera-like crap and into something that shows it's obvious they're trying to hard to be epic.
00:6 = opening tittle,00:12 = part of intro,1:24 = charater difference,1:53 = charater selection screen,2:04 = classic mode differences,3:14 = stage selection screen,3:19 = differences of brawls,4:23 = adventure mode,4:33 = home run contest,4:40 = trophy winning,4:45 = brawl with same charaters and stage,5:27 = end of brawl,5:41 = (my favorite) the differences of the FALCON PUNCH!!!!!!!!
