From what I can tell, these looked like the Sega Genesis version of the game. Makes sense since the genesis is so easy to emulate, or even run on a SoC. At this screen size, it isn't a bad direction to go honestly. The Super had some ugly sound compression in the original release. Champion was also reasonably decent.
My only concern is, the previous versions had NES roms and Sega roms too, these are marketed as a Pro unit. So I would expect an actual arcade rom or MAME at least.
They don't look like the Sega Genesis version, they are the Sega Genesis version. The only thing is that they replaced every reference of Sega with their logo.
I love at 2:14 they made the side box art exactly like the cardboard boxes Genesis games came later on. The artists did amazing work here. As decent as this looks, I think it's going to have a very limited audience if it is $35-40 like the others. For $20 more you can buy the Capcom Super Pocket Player which has 18 built-in roms (SFII' arcade is one) and itself is an Evercade system greatly expanding its long-value. I prefer the button layout of MyArcade's SFII handheld over other available options and hope they iterate on its design in the future, but I can't see this selling many units because of its release window. Unless it is $15 retail, Capcom Super Pocket just kills it. Releasing last year would have given MyArcade a fighting chance. at least. The SFII Pocket Player is like a portable redesign of that old SFII Champion Edition Plug N' Play (both use Genesis CE!) which is the first time I've had nostalgia for a plug n' play system? Maybe this is an emerging market they're aiming for.
If it's the Mega Drive (Genesis) ROM then that would explain the audio compression. Still looks very good, if it makes it to the UK I will pick one up.
As an impatient man-child with money on the hip, I've ordered this from Amazon US....can't wait for it to arrive. You can never have enough Street Fighter 2!
Great review Jon. What a scoop! This looks like a Pocket Player I need to add to my collection and will be the perfect partner for my SF2 Arcade 1UP cabinet. Keep up the awesome work :-)
Excellent video as always Jon. I've missed a few of your videos the last couple of weeks because I'm on a Construction Camp Job at an Oil Refinery out of Province. But, I'm still around and I watch when I'm on my weeks off.
I know that it's a little bit more expensive, but the new Evercade EXP handheld that has Street Fighter and more built-in eats this thing's lunch. For a few more dollars you get so much more.
Thanks Jon! Finally new MYARCADE stuff to talk about. Looks good. Can’t wait for your reviews on the new line of products. Hope you were spared from the storms.
It's fun times for the next few weeks! Thanks for asking - the storm just brought some wind gusts and light rain, then moved on. We caught a break from this one, but not all Floridians were as lucky.
Looks good, Jon! The sound is what is causing me hesitation. I’d like to hear it on headphones. Gameplay does look like a console but they did make fun console ports! Definitely on my wish list!
You're wise to take pause with the compressed samples. The more I played the less I noticed since I was focused more on gameplay than analysis. Still, you won't forget that it's not the arcade ROM.
I played Street Fighter 2 Turbo alot on SNES when I was a kid. It's the first game I ever beat. I'd like to go back to it and play it with an arcade stick. Street Fighter 2 is still a very popular game among retro gamers.
Looks really cool reminds me of the Tiger Electronic Handhelds but much like the handheld the quality of emulation of this handheld isn’t really holding up well. Screen tearing, no Arcade version, bad audio and also 4 double a batteries to power this thing along with no Micro SD Port. I think the Super Pocket Capcom is a much better choice for a handheld since it supports Evercade carts. But this does have some really nice artwork that alone makes this quite collectable and would look good in anyones collection.
Definitely intrigued to see what else they do with the Pro series of players - and yeah, would definitely be happy to pay a few extra coins for an Elite version!
Given my ample supply of games, I wouldn’t go out and buy this. But if I found one in my Christmas stocking or something? I certainly wouldn’t be upset. Great look at this!
Yes excited to see your reviews on all the new my arcade line up! I grew up with the genesis versions and these appear to be those so this unit would be fine for me, but not at the initial retail price. $25 feels like a more fair value although I'd certainly pay more if it had more games.
Some of the Box is finally being released! Overall, a very good offering it seems. Love the look of this unit. The layout and color scheme, the sound is what you'd expect, controls looks like they work well. As long as it's $30 to $35 and not $50, I'm a buyer.
Hello there! I'm visually impaired and I love yooour videos. The way you describe the games is very useful for the blind. I wish I could buy this handheld game cuzz the micro edition's too big. I'd like to know if it's difficult to switch from the 2 games included in the console. Also, I'd be very grateful if you could tell me how techniques are executed. I just don't understand. Thanks in advance. Blessings.
Hey, Cristian. Thanks for checking out my videos and for your comment. I'd be glad to help. When the game first powers on, a brief animation resolves to a game select screen with two large buttons stacked one upon the other, with the top one already selected. That top option is SF2: The New Challengers and the bottom option is SF2: Special Champion Edition. If you tap the A button, New Challengers will launch. Once in a game, you can press the HOME button just above the X button on the top-right of the unit, which will return you to the game select screen. If you'd like to play Champion Edition, you need only tap down once on the d-pad before pressing A, and you'll launch the other game. I hope this clarifies the functionality for you. If you have any further questions, you can always reach back out.
I’m gonna re-quote the SFII Tiger Handheld commercial for this vid: "So you wanna be a Street Fighter? *You're no Street Fighter!* Not until you master the sixteen World Warriors of both Street Fighter II handheld games! Hadōkens, Sonic Booms, and Yoga Fires are your projectiles! Hundred Hand Slaps, Lightning Kicks, and Electric Thunders are your ammunitions! Shōryūkens, Flash Kicks, and Cannon Spikes are your missiles! Tatsumakis, Double Lariats, and Spinning Bird Kicks are your military-flails! Rolling Attacks, Sumo Head Butts, and Spiral Arrows are your cannons. Beat twelve in a row and face: Balrog! Vega! Sagat! *M. Bison!* Come back, then we'll talk!" (Street Fighter II handheld game, new from MY ARCADE, batteries not included.)
So, in this case the ‘Pro’ isn’t necessarily referring to an arcade ROM. I am curious to see about the other Pro games coming out. Was surprised to see Space Invaders in that brochure when an excellent one already exists by MyArcade. :)
Love that they used Street Fighter: The Animated Movie animation for the box art. The Coming Soon unit is Tetris 😊 Jon, did they happen to tell you which retail stores will carry these?
Sorry I don't know all the retailers. Amazon most certainly, and I know I saw their stuff pop up on Best Buy as well. Based on history, I think Target is also a good bet.
You should use the claw hold for the buttons, so that you can do Zangief's ballet spinning punch, Dhalsim's teleport, Boxer's turnaround punch, and T. Hawk's dive...
$20 is fine for Genesis roms I guess, but this is $40. How do you regress from the previous release that had arcade roms? It’s 2023, we’re not excited playing inferior ports.
I think a better choice here would be spend a little more and get an evercade exp or used switch lite and $20 Street fighter collection. This doesn't seem to be a very good way to play these games unfortunately. Just my two cents
As much as I like the artwork and form of this console, having 2 Genesis roms with screen tearing sounds like a steal to me. Not something I would buy.
My Arcade's thing has ALWAYS been home ports. Those classic games from Namco and such are usually the NES versions of those classic games. Here you have the Genesis/Mega Drive ports of these games on these systems. Overall, there is nothing wrong with that, as long as people know what they are expecting in the long run. So maybe My Arcade should legally change their name to 'My Home Port Disguised as an Arcade' as 'My Liar' seems a bit harsh. LOL. So there you have it, My Arcade is now using 16-bit game ROM's in it's devices now.
Mostly accurate. The Premium Edition line featured arcade ROMs, most nearly everything else has been NES. I hear the Namco Pro line is treading some new ground, though. Looking forward to that.
@@GenXGrownUp I didn't know that My Arcade was going premium, but if they use the actual arcade ROM's for those then fair enough. They do sound interesting in that regard.
@@GenXGrownUp Thanks for letting me know. :) I will admit that I at first thought that this was a review of the Evercade's new Capcom mini portable game machine. :D
It's definitely the Sega Genesis versions of both :) it was around the time when they had the 6 button controller :) fun fact alot of fighting supported the 6 button controller :)
Not gonna lie I'd totally chuck that into my bag and play when I'm heading into the city. It isn't perfect, but it isn't bad for the money. It did look a little sluggish, but not unplayable. Also THEY HAVE THE LICENSE FOR MS. PACMAN? Oh boy. That I might need to get my hands on now.
Its a custom version of the Genesis Rom ,you said you used to play SNES version , the combos connect better and animation actually looks arcade closer on Genesis so enjoy, but it is custom gen roms , , button layout should've tipped you off 😸👍👍
I'm certain to find one at my local Target store. Might be easier for me to play than the tabletop version of SFII: Champion Edition that I currently have.
They are the Mega Drive versions, i could see from the screen sticker straight away. I can't understand why they didn't put the arcade ROMs on it only that the license on the table top ones must have cost them a fair bit, i believe the table tops by my arcade will have Super Street Fighter 2 arcade ROM. If i got this i would be playing the champion edition, it's more on par with the arcade quality.
Agreed. The CE sounded a bit clearer and louder too. I'm guessing because NC has so many more characters, sprites, and sounds that it requires more compression.
Put the OG Street Fighter on this as a hidden secret, etc I would totally applaud, and totally consider, even though we are not playing arcade roms. (FYI there was a home port also of said game. ) I wanted an arcade rom version for this release, instead of the console based versions. I would have paid more for arcade roms. I have a Nomad and several nomad knock offs I can easily play these two Genesis games on my NYC commute journeys. FYI the OG nomad doubles as a weapon, as it’s a brick.
Looks like I may prefer the premium arcade edition from my arcade(has the arcade rom), but I like this thing mayhaps. The Super Street Fighter 2 for Genesis is kind of known to have weak sound, but the CE port on Genesis is quite close to the arcade( I prefer it to the SNES ones, even turbo). Though, I suck at SF 2. 😊
I would love to see this vs the also upcoming hyper mega tech capcom edition (the new little evercade thing). Quality wise I think my arcade would easily lose against it because of no arcade roms, but i wonder how they stack up when considering each one's price vs features. Personally I reckon 3.5 for thsi one may seem a little too generous a score once hyper mega tech capcom edition is compared, but who knows, i've never played either of these upcoming handheld in person! Great to see these vids!
I’ve got the mini cabinet and the slightly bigger cabinet that my arcade came out with. I was gonna pick this up as well but it taking four AA batteries is a turn off. Solid review though thank you!
I have all the current Pocket Players and all the Micro ones, this one is a yes, I sense the Space Invaders will be a go for me as well. The Atari one I'm not 100% sure of, and not interested in the Tetris Pocket or Micro unless I find them real cheap at some point in time. It's still exciting to see these units, and the Atari partnership. Same with Arcade 1Up.
Interesting, it doesn’t have a link cable like the Contra pocket player for 2 players. I would think this one would certainly be one to have that ability too.
Probably to save on cost but a miss opportunity indeed. They could at least made a USB port so we could plug in a USB controller for it. Console games don't need a second screen to play multiplayer, they just need another controller like on the Sega Nomad.
Hey, Jon. I'm trying to decide between buying either the Mega Man Micro Player Pro or the Mega Man Pocket Player Pro. I've been leaning toward the Pocket Player since the D-pad control seems easier to handle than the arcade stick for each of the six included games. Can you confirm (in your opinion) if this is true? Would you recommend one over the other based solely on gameplay? Thanks for your time.
I would tend to lean toward the Pocket Player Pro variation of Mega Man. I think the handheld orientation and d-pad (as you mentioned) better lend themselves to the precision control needed for MM games, and more comfortable for long-term gameplay.
@@GenXGrownUp That's what I was thinking too. Thank you again for the prompt reply and for sharing your opinion (which I highly respect). Love both of your RU-vid channels; keep up the great work! 🙂
yeah so your bought and paid for to do these reviews and make them biased and positive otherwise you dont get free stuff anymore. never was subbed to begin with idk how this video popped up in my feed @@GenXGrownUp
@@BanditsBest686you obviously don't watch these reviews. Jon is always honest about his impressions and I'm pretty sure he would've graded it higher that a 3 1/2 if he was "bought and paid for"
@@BanditsBest686 A: You clearly didn't watch the video because he had plenty of legit points against it, and B: He literally says they sent it which, in case you didn't know, nearly EVERY site that reviews anything on a regular basis gets product as review samples. That doesn't mean they don't give fair reviews or that they were bought and paid for. Also C: He gave it 3.5 tokens. If I "bought and paid for" that review, I'd be pretty pissed off. Now gone with ye, troll.
Hey jon you. Like❤ Street Fighter so much then get the Jada Toy's Street Fighter Action Figuers they look a lot like the ones in the Arcade bro what do you think ?
Mostly accurate. You'll remember the Premium Edition line featured arcade ROM images, and were clearly labeled as such. Not so with the majority of their catalog, though.
I recon the retro handheld gaming scene is going to be BOOMING in 10 years, when one considers the exorbitant price of retro game disc collecting AND the issue of game preservation. I.e. 85% of past games are no longer retail available. Devices like this will eventually run full arcade and PS2/Dreamcast/Gamecube/og Xbox games.
Certainly better. The compression is part of the encoding, but if you use quality earbuds/phones everything is clearer than the internal speaker for sure.
for someone who does not understand emulators may be worthwhile. But for the same price you have a Chinese emulator console with a real dpad and all the SF2 roms you want and also with battery!
It looks neat just it's 3 years to late... Evercade are soon to release a Hyper Mega Tech Super Pocket which is a Gameboy style handheld with real arcade ROMs. There are two versions, one Capcom, (inc Street Fighter 2) and one Taito, and they also play every Evercade cartridge. Check them out as these Pocket Players which were cool 3 years ago don't hold up any more.
Lots of commenters talking about the Evercade (which I love), but it just doesn't have any market penetration. Hobbyists know about it, but it doesn't seem to have any distribution to retail, so the average consumer doesn't know it exists. That makes these types of products very attractive. Evercade is missing fully half its market, I feel.
@@GenXGrownUp Yeah I agree what you say about Evercade! The silly named Hyper Mega Tech Super Pocket by Blaze I believe is more aimed at that, getting it to shops more so and cheap enough that non-full time gamers might pick up. I have both on pre-order, crystal versions exclusive to Funstock but in truth I prefer Evercade and wish those Capcom and Taito games were on cart. Time will tell I guess. I love my Bubble Bobble Pocket Player though! 😃👍
yeah those are def Genesis roms. ABC XYZ is genesis controls. I love my mini arcade of the actual arcade roms. would be cool if it was more portable though.
Amazing review , street fighter 2 was my all time favourite , i just bought this from best buy , new street fighter games can't even hold this legendary game's jockstrap . With their stupid swollen characters i cant , hate that shit in new street fighter games .
I dont understand why they didnt use the arcade versions. If this was 1998 and they had one of these units, i can understand that, but this is 2023. Come on my arcade!
Like you, I would prefer the arcade ROMs. I understand it's a trade-off between necessary internals and hitting a mass-market price point. But I will keep telling any My Arcade exec that will listen that we want the arcade versions! Thanks for watching.
Probably to save on cost. Remember the arcade versions are not running on the same hardware, Street Fighter II Champion Edition was running on CPS-1 whereas Super Street Fighter II was running on CPS-2 and My Arcade want to put both games using the same hardware on the cheap so the Sega Genesis versions work best on that plus by putting the Genesis versions on there at least you get three games. Special Champion Edition includes both Champion Edition and Hyper Fighting on it so it's worth the price.
Bought this specifically because I played the Genesis versions as a kid and it has the proper button layout. That said, it's the same Genesis SoC with bad sound emulation that we've seen for decades from the likes of AT Games. Also, the dpad is pretty bad. You can't just press a diagonal, it even comfortably roll a quarter circle. You have to like rock the opposite direction and really press through it to get it to register. I shouldn't need to back up and do a half circle for a fireball. And forget about accurate jump ins. After one playthrough my left thumb was killing me because of how much harder I had to work the dpad. Disappointing, I like the aesthetics of the device. I might pop it open and try to modify the dpad if possible, but right now I'd rather play something with a good dpad and the wrong 4+shoulder layout.
Hello! Do you have any idea how the command works? To throw thing or make special move. Sometime its like you cant do much youre just watching the guy destroy you. I can see that you use often the z letter
Not sure about UK availability, but there are links in the video description, and anything out of stock will be replenished shortly if you wanted to place an order.
This is like the tiger handheld of modern times. Very basic with 1~2 games...albeit an actual game. These still makes for great Christmas stocking stuffers for children and non-gaming adults who want simple arcade games.
