Super-Strong Paper Mache that Dries Really Fast

Ultimate Paper Mache

Need a strong, lightweight mask fast? Here's a way to make super-strong paper mache that only needs one layer and dries overnight. But yeah, it's expensive - so only use this method if you need a mask that's almost indestructible, or if you need to get it done from start to finish in two days or less.
By the way, this lion, Simba, plus three more headdress-style masks for the Lion King Play, are now available as easy-to-use patterns here: www.ultimatepa...
The Titebond III glue is fantastic for these masks. My local hardware store only carries tiny bottles of it, and I have many more patterns to design for the Lion King characters. So I ordered my glue online from amazon.com - the larger bottles are a much better value than the small ones. You can find it here: amzn.to/2LmGSx7
When I have all the patterns done for the lions from the Lion King play I'll put a link to them here. In the meantime, if you'd like to make one of the animal sculptures that are on the wall behind me in the video, you can find the patterns here: www.ultimatepa... I make sure the patterns are easy enough so anyone can successfully complete their project - but just challenging enough so you'll be really proud of your sculpture when it's done. :)

My mom and I made a paper mache mountain for my 3 year old nephew with wood glue and blue shop towels over a frame of chicken wire stapled to a thin sheet of plywood, and two PVC pipe scraps (they form two tunnels through the mountain). It was scaled for him to drive his toy cars on a ledge that spiraled up the outside, and of course through the tunnels. He also used it as a place for his plastic dinosaurs and other toys to roam. When we made it we wanted to be sure it was strong enough for him to lean on to reach in the tunnels and even to climb on just in case. With three layers of shop towels and wood glue that were spray painted when it was all dry, it ended up so tough that he could play with it outside with the garden hose, and it has held up in perfect shape for two years. Last time I was visiting, there was talk of finding it a new home because it takes up so much space, so it may be gone by now. I can't blame them since it's about three feet tall and only fits through a doorway held in one orientation. Luckily it's very light weight. Anyways, thank you for your videos! I love all your work, and appreciate all your wonderful information on working with paper mache.

What a great project. I would love to see it. I hadn't thought of using the glue with shop towels, but if they were saturated with it, I can see how it would make the structure very strong. And now that you mentioned it, I wonder if shop towels and Titebond could be the answer for all the people who want waterproof paper mache? Boy - that would be great, if it worked. Thanks so much for posting your comment!

I just want to thank you for all your videos. I am in the process of publishing my first novel in a series and as an artist I am designing my book covers. I needed to be able to create creatures that are not human yet with many human features. @@UltimatePaperMacheJonni, I live in Trinidad, in the Caribbean. The product is called The Original Poly V7 Cement Binder, and it is made right here in Trinidad. It is used for repairs to concrete, and is mixed in with the mortar. Also used as a sealer to porous cement floors, where a solution of water and Poly V7 is applied as a primer. It looks just like white glue and it is water based, but unfortunately the label does not give the ingredients. I have used it in your recipe with the joint compound and it gets rock hard when it dries. I also found that a water/poly v7 solution helps to smooth the paper mache clay with my fingers. You can find the product here www.cpmltt.com/products/construction/poly_V7

Sometimes a bargain brand will do (pays to prototype a project first).... but the quality ingredients makes for a better project. Johnny, I have been trying to make papier mache and trying to make crafts with it. I will tell you this. Where I come from, in Canada, we have paper grocery bags at our Sobeys stores. A lot of times, I bring the grocery bags home with me and when I empty them, I save them. A few months ago, I cut up a paper bag into small strips and stuck it into another bag (that wasn't paper). I am going to be using newspaper to cover the skeleton of the paper mache object, then I can put the strips of paper bag on them. The paper bag strips are stronger and easier to paint, because you don't have to continuously paint over ink that is on a newspaper.
@UltimatePaperMache
@UltimatePaperMache 9 месяцев назад
I haven't used the paper bag paper for quite a while, only because our local store doesn't use them. But it is stronger, as you say. And even the lightweight brown paper from amazon.com boxes is easier to use than newspaper, because you can see the shapes better without all that printing. Let us know how your new sculptures turn out!
@MichaelBrookham

@@UltimatePaperMache okay, I wasn't sure if anyone else ever used strips of paper bag to do paper mache. My mother used to have a craft store and she got stuff on consignment. Some of it was brownish tan, so I assume it was made with paper bag strips

We made a paper boat using TB3 and the newspaper and TB3 held up well. We left the boat outside one winter and the shell held up fine. This may be the solution for outdoor paper mache. The core of the boat was foam that gave it structural strength, but the shell was only Tightbond III based paper mache with three layer of newspaper. We did not paint it but a quality exterior paint would have been advised.

this is some really cool art! Thank you for sharing the technique and ideas! I'm a amateur with paper mache and my mask just collapsed, I really appreciate this!

Glad it was helpful! Why did your mask collapse? Did you try to take it off a form before it was completely dry?
@Pullipe
@Pullipe 3 года назад
@@UltimatePaperMache I was using a balloon to make the top part of a mask, but the balloon starting deflating before it was completely dried
@UltimatePaperMache
@UltimatePaperMache 3 года назад
@@Pullipe Well, that explains it - balloons are really hard to work with. Next time you might want to make a balloon-shaped form by putting some rice or sand in a small plastic bag, and tying it closed. It won't keep getting bigger and smaller, the way real balloons do. I hope you're having fun anyway, in spite of the temporary setback. 😀

I’ve recently started creating more costumes and masks as well, and I really like the idea of making a separate part to wear on the head, instead of a face mask directly. Turned out great! 🙂 How do you feel about wall paper paste for paper mache?
@UltimatePaperMache
@UltimatePaperMache 5 лет назад
I haven't used it, but I know it's a traditional choice. I think it may be good in areas where mold is a big problem.

Hi there. Lovely work! Just for more info: Titebond III is a waterproof wood glue. In thin layers, it dries in one hour and it takes eight hours to cure and reach its full strength. The only problem is that it doesn’t sand very well and will limit the paints you can use (because it’s waterproof).
@UltimatePaperMache
@UltimatePaperMache 4 года назад
Thanks for the tips. I've been using spray primer on my Lion King masks under the acrylic paint, and I haven't had any problem with the paint yet. Do you know what kinds of paint won't work with the wood glue?
@thiagoamaral5912
@thiagoamaral5912 4 года назад
Ultimate Paper Mache Oh, you won’t, if you’re using primer! :) Titebond III cures sort of like plastic, so you just need a light sanding and a primer and you’ll be alright. Also, loving the channel. :)

Is it possible to build up a mold to make it 1/8 thick and then sand it smooth?
@UltimatePaperMache
@UltimatePaperMache 3 года назад
I'm not quite sure what you mean. You can add as many layers as you want, and paper mache can be sanded. You might want to do it outside because you'll get a lot of dust.

Love this💕 what kind of paper did you use? Where to buy? Thanks
@UltimatePaperMache
@UltimatePaperMache 2 года назад
I didn't buy the paper. It's the brown paper that comes as stuffing in amazon.com boxes. It's only slightly heavier than newspaper, and newspaper would work just as well. The brown paper looks better on a video, though. 😊

Hi Maksim. I create my own mask patterns, and sell them on my website. You can find there here: www.ultimatepapermache.com/patterns I don't know of anyone else who makes the same type of pattern, although you might look for "papercraft lion pattern."

Yes, paper mache would work for that. You might need to reinforce it with a cardboard armature to make it stronger.

I was wanting to make my own stencils to design phrases on t-shirts. So I bought a die cutting machine and die cut letters, but it won't cut through Notebook Divider sheets. I just used normal construction paper which is too thin for me to use as a stencil, but if this will work to stiffen the page so it doesn't go soggy when I'm painting a shirt... that would be so amazing!
