In this video we will perform the valve clearance and CCT replacement on a Super Ténéré 1200. I hope this video will give you the confidence to perform this job and save yourself a significant amount of money. Also not all mechanics will be honest enough to actually do the job so this will give you extra confidence that it was done and your bike is running 100%. I know it is a very long video but I wanted to give you every single detail. Also I'm not a mechanic so check out the comment section for the suggestions that I will get over time.

Many thanks for your video, after seeing it a couple of times in combination with a manual I decided to go for it. The last time I did anything that will come close to this was allmost 30 years ago on a Kawasaki Z900, one simular valve adjusting technique. But a lot easier to acces, the valvecover was a PITA !! Get some very strong glue like gasketsealant and seal it a day before you are planning to mount it; you will need all the help you can get !! Keep up the good work !
@Freedomachine
@Freedomachine 2 года назад
Thanks for watching 😊 gluing the seal against the head cover might create some uneaven points and it might not be flat once you tighten it down. It has to be a very flexible glue/silicone but I prefer not to do that. I know many do.

Hard job & master class. Thank you so much for showing us and filming it. Did the first 40k in Yamaha valve clearance check and now around 74K...I thing I'll wait to 100K to check the valves again if still the motor runs so smooth, strong and perfect, but besides basic maintenance, it's the only labor that will let do Yamaha mechanic... Fingers cross.... It's a lottery with most of them.... Thought it's very helpful the video, I prefer not doing it myself!! Complicated for me... The first 40K, Yamaha told me they were all in spec. (valves). Now runs great, round, stronger and smother everyday. Two years and three months and would repeat again doubtless!! St12 is not obsolete as some say... It's proofed, it works/runs great and it's the best!

AS I SUPER TENERE 1200 OWNER, I AM HAPPY TO FIND A DETAILED VIDEO ABOUT HOW YOU DO THE VALVE CLEARENCE CHECK, SO MANY THANKS FOR CHARING. JUST ONE QUESTION ; AT HOW MANY KM DO YOU DO THE FIRST CHECK ? SINCE I AM AT 40000 KM NOW. THANKS . AND ALSO SINCE I COULDN'T FIND ANY INFORMATION ABOUT WHEN IS THE RIGHT TIME TO CHANGE THE CLUTCH ASSEMBLY.
@Freedomachine
@Freedomachine 3 года назад
Thanks for watching. Yamaha reccomends the check to be performed every 40.000km. Many do it at 80 though. Most people I know have found them perfectly in spec at 40k. I recommend you follow the yamaha guidelines of course. The clutch assembly does not need to be changed unless it vibrates at 3000rpm. Gen 1(pre 2014) only might have this issue. Gen 2 do not need clutch basket replacements.

@Freedomachine
@Freedomachine 2 года назад
Hi Tom. Not a big deal. Remove the chain and put crankshaft and camshafts as they should be. From what I remember the intake lobes are pushing down on the valves in this initial configuration so its better to unbolt the camshaft. Fix the chan back on it and then bolt the intake camshaft back on. This will put the chain in tension so use two cable ties on the intake. Release the chain tensioner and you should be fine. If you need more help contact me tomorrow. I will do my best to help you.

You will hear it and feel it. The tensioner will slap the guide quite hard against the chain. If you don't notice it then it's not happening. Use some long screwdriver or piece of metal and apply decent amount of force. Just to be clear you need to push away from the chain not towards it. Thanks for watching 😊 It looks harder than what it is. I would definitely not take the engine out. Just remove the tank completely.

@@Freedomachine probably time I should start looking at doing mine! But I want to build a bike lift to get it up to a decent height so I'm not scrambling around on the ground. That, I think would make a huge difference for workability. I have the 2014 model, love it. 👍😊 Pity you can't send pics on here or I'd send you a pic of mine.

Use knee pads and you will be at the perfect hight😊

What happens if don't adjust?
@Freedomachine
@Freedomachine 3 года назад
Thanks for watching. If you let it go far out of adjustment many things can go wrong but ultimately it will destroy your engine. On the ST they normally get tight which means that your valves won't close completely. You can imagine what happens if you have the combustion going past your valves.
@Freedomachine
@Freedomachine 3 года назад
I'll expand a little on that. If valves don't close combustion will go past your valves causing overheating of parts. Typical symptom are exhaust pipes getting glowing red. Not good! If the valves are loose you will have the lobes hammering against the valves and these will eventually get destroyed. It is very important to have a good valve clearance also because the bike runs better and smoother because the timing is correct.

It really pisses you off after going through all this only to find that every valve is within spec!
@Freedomachine
@Freedomachine 4 года назад
You can avoid a really big part of this job if they are within spec but I get what you are saying. Taking out the valve cover is a big pain. Thanks for watching!

How often do you have to do this because I heard they go a hundred thousand miles trouble-free but yeah hey Yamaha Tech to do this don't even attempt it
@Freedomachine
@Freedomachine 3 года назад
Thanks for watching 😊 It needs to be done every 40.000km as many factors decide what happens with the valves. Some might go 80k without issues and some reach barely 40k. If you want to avoid issues then you should follow Yamaha's reccomended service interval.

if i line up K latter with the meating point on the engine adn evrything you sead in this wideo mu 1 cilinder doesnt have compression and backfiers thrue the intake somthing is wrong in your words....

Thanks for watching. It's not only about allignig K. There is more to it. If you skipped fast through the video then I suggest you actually watch it fully. Every step you see is what I did.
@Freedomachine
@Freedomachine 3 года назад
From 1:10:15 you should watch it fully. Also you should have removed the chain from the camshafts in the same position as I did
@Freedomachine
@Freedomachine 3 года назад
Finally it is not enough to just align K but you also need to check the camshafts position. The cycle repeats every two revolutions of the crankshaft.
@aca192maric

Everything lines up the k mark the camshafts the lobes the 4.5 tooth from e to I mark everything. But I want to mention I was trading to start it with a little bit of fuel in the intake and only the coil packs are connected probyble it's making a mistake when to fire spark but the compression test is driving me crazy on the first cilider it's showing around 2bar. Maybe that is decompressor job. I am stuck haha i don't know what to do tomorrow I will put the injection and sparks to try to fire it up..
@Freedomachine

If everything is aligned right and there is no interference (spin it manually without spark plugs) then it will start. Just put it back normal.
