Matt tests a Subaru BRZ with a Vortech Centrifugal supercharger making about 325 horsepower. It has a host of suspension, brake, wheel and tire upgrades as well.
TheSmokingTire Use a splitter to record one mic on the left channel and another on the right. Then merge both tracks during the editing, so we could hear both voices coming from the screen instead of jumping left to right on wide panorama. Or add some subtitles.
Everytime Gavin smiled, I found myself smirking along with him. When your car is complimented it's really hard not to bubble up with a smile. Genuinely enjoyed the video!
***** True...he did install it himself. I do give him credit for that :) I just thought it was funny at the beginning of video how he answered with "I think so" to two of Matt's questions...all good though :)
***** to be fair, I did jump the gun by saying that. After watching the whole video he did say he installed some stuff himself, so I'll give him some credit where its due. My view on that phrase has nothing to do with who installs it, but more with how you get the car. Either by buying it stock and then messing around with it, or buying someone else's project and not having a clue what is inside of it. I thought Gavin was the latter type until I saw the whole vid.
Hi! This is Gavin and thanks for all the comments. Just wanna say thank you again to Matt TheSmokingTire for driving my car so ill be able to learn more.
I love these videos - so cool to see all the different ways people have tuned their cars. One criticism I have is that it can at times be difficult to hear the passengers: I don't know if Matt has a microphone on him or something, but I think the owners/passengers should get one so they are a bit louder.
This brz is done really, really nicely. No stupid turbos setups, no stupid wheels nor childish stance, no stupid colors and show off body kits. Good taste, congrats to the owner.
super chargers have some very bad downsides, kid. whatever you choose, it needs to be done right with proper specs. too many idiots want more power and put bigger pulleys than the car engine can handle and something always breaks after a year or two with "do it yourself" super chargers.
When I had my Supra, I loved the turbo lag. I know that may sound a bit off, especially to a lot of the younger crowd but, applying some medium throttle then a few seconds later, here the turbo spool and that punch in your chest from boost coming on is just awesome. If I had a small, RWD import, I would definitely much rather go for a turbocharger setup. For some reason I just feel superchargers are more for American cars. Not knocking this guy's choice to supercharge the BRZ, just saying it's not the route I would take.
haha I think Matt is subconsciously craving a supercharged #BRZ. I can't blame him, I've heard really nice things about those cars and I'm sure a supercharger pretty much completes that car.
TheSmokingTire Could you guys start uploading in 60 fps?? That would seriously take your videos to the next level. Ripping through the canyons in glorious 60 fps would be fkn awesome!
I think RU-vid decides on who gets to upload in 60fps; the function is still being worked on. The announcement they had a few months back was only about RU-vid's ability to 'support' 60fps. Correct me if I'm wrong, anyone.
Matt, do you not worry about getting ticketed from your snake drives? (as in, after you post the video) Is that actually a thing? People seem to worry about it.
Pas De MD Alex's reference to statute of limitations was regarding a transcontinental record run, of which he had much evidence on which someone could prosecute. There is no evidence here. There is no speedometer, there is no location tags, date or time tags from when it was shot. All the things you'd need to prosecute me for speeding are absent from this video.
I'm not making the argument that anyone would actually prosecute you--and I definitely don't think they should--but helicopter/plane monitored speed traps use landmarks to calculate an average speed e.g. mile markers. It would be trivial to figure out how fast you were going by using google maps and timestamps. The second half of my question was actually that I'm curious about whether you had heard of this happening to anyone? I know some people put their speedo, which is stupid, but I feel like I've heard of at least one person fined thanks to a youtube driving video (not that my fuzzy memory is proof of anything.)
Sweet ride! The Brz is such a rewarding car to drive. The first time I got to get behind the wheel of one i was amazed at how easy it was to drive! The fact he learned to drive a stick just goes to show what an amazing car it really is and add those mods boom! The perfect recipe for a daily canyon carver!!
Another great Video! Much appreciated Matt!! I think this was a great idea doing these snake runs! People can really relate on so many levels. And love seeing all the "Tuned" Cars I know I do!!
so for those who have driven both, Supercharger, or turbo charger? - A turbo can be linear so don't challenge that part.. I want to know from someones experience what THEY prefer, because I am considering F.I - I will track my car, but for the most part its a daily that will see winter, and plenty of twisty roads
"Your English is really good." Thinks to self "Shit, I can't believe I said that, better say something else nice next" "...Your car is also really good" lol
A good friend of mine has a Skyline R33 GT-R and another friend of mine has a Skyline R34 GT-T swapped with an RB26DETT. We plan traveling across the United-States (We're from Canada) and go down to California next summer. I wonder if he'd like to drive on of those lol
Matt you are fucking awesome, continuing to drive more than one FRS/BRZ and reviewing them , thank you! I am a long time follower, and love that you're a huge car guy! keep em coming dude!
TheSmokingTire Matt, you've got to get yourself something cheap and easy to wrench on... get a S13 or a GC5 while you still can, they're both so stupid simple to work on and both have massive potential, the much-maligned truck motor in the S13 will spit out 300hp on stock internals and the EJ18 can take the EJ22 heads, WRX turbo piping, STi injectors drop in... And there's craploads of room under the hood to work on both cars, tossable. You know you want to wrench. It does suck when wrenching on your daily goes wrong, so don't do that. You have the resources to score something worthy to work on
TheSmokingTire i dont blame you. Besides; if every car enthusiast took to wrenching on their own vehicle, how many other enthusiasts would be out of jobs? How many cool and helpful people would we miss out on by hiding in our garages all day?
Great setup. Enough power to wake the chassis up but not to much to overwhelm it. Not to sure on the coilovers. Looks like the D2s are to stiff for the car like its lost some of its compliancy, however I am sure it's a good setup for track.
want that you drive my TRD GT86 Turbo ! Garrett GT28R and build engine ! Forged pistons and rod's. Only negative point is..... i am from Germany but you can check videos on my channel. Greetz from Germany
What's really apparent and clear is that this kid is a newb who doesn't truly know a lot about cars in a mechanical sense. It seems like he just had money to spend, bought parts, and had shops install it for him. It's blatant because he clearly doesn't know what a centrifugal supercharger is, he says, "yeah, I think so", and matt has to quickly finish for him and say the snail looking one, yeah okay, to move it along so it isn't awkward, then matt asks for power, kid replies 'on paper it's 290'...which is ambiguous as fuck, matt clarifies, at the 'crank' right? Kid has no idea what that means....and guesses again, "yeah i think so". Doesn't even know if a/c affects his power on a car with a supercharger. Shit like this continues throughout the video. Just irritating, matt gives him a credit for what seems like a build built through more having parents money then having knowledge.
Afistnu I filmed their GT3RS 4.1 for Tuned, and it was pretty much the best car I'd ever driven. Just did their 800 HP GT2 last week, and it was pretty much the scariest car I've ever driven. Fun stuff.
TheSmokingTire Sweet, thanks. Can't wait to watch. For what its worth (which probably isn't much), I've enjoyed these one-takes of all the random cars lately. These are some interesting cars and most of them, pretty much anyone could go out and buy/mod/tune/etc.
Perfect, always wanted to see one of these brought up to the power levels they deserve. Nothing over the top, just a small bump to turn this already great drivers car into an amazing one. Good job owner whos name ive forgotten and thanks Matt for showing it to us.
Try using google translate and type in BRZ and select it to translate from Bosnian to English, and ull get literally FAST. Interesting fact... BRZ = FAST
Hey i got a question, i am not in the US but I am looking to get a fun quick 4 door car, I originally wanted a wrx ot an evo but they are out of my budget reach. I now am looking at either a 2002 b15 sentra spec v with a SR20VE swap or a 2002 yetta vr6 4 cylinder turbo vs v6 almost same HP any idea which is best?
Matt. Is Subaru paying you? I mean the supercharger is nice but the car is lame. Typical Japanese no balls. Seriously!"? Wow I hope you are getting paid And owned by Subaru
love a drivers car. I went from a bmw 335i that I had modded to 400hp to a 2007 Saturn Sky Redline bone stock...the sky being 2700lbs, 260hp/260tq...i kills my BMW in the aspect of fun and being "one" with the car. Cool BRZ, he needs to push it some more, 300hp crank is just scratching at the FA capabilities.
Yeah, I agree with Matt fully on this one. The BRZ is a fantastic platform, but it's definitely underpowered. An extra ~70hp gives it a nice kick in the ass it should have had from the factory, and the motor really responds well to it and it won't cook the stock internals, so yea, a must have for a BRZ, in my opinion, it's the way the car should have came, and for ~25k (if you buy the BRZ 2nd hand) you can have a very fun little roadster.
God dammit i wish you came over to the UK for one takes haha, i got a 1993 Supercharged VW Polo G40! In all seriousness though that BRZ was pretty much the perfect recipe sports car, not too much power and brilliant handling. Another awesome video!
So this network has turned into some dude begging people to let him drive their cars on some random california road? Seems to have jumped the shark so to speak. I would rather watch thedudeinblue do reviews. Even his production seems better than TST's production.
sheldon lemen Of course, I do the same. I'm not 'hating'. But if you install something on the car, you'd expect to know what it was. But I get it, cameras, second language.. it's though.
Stock car have 200hp....after tuning with Vortech it have 325hp, 125hp more than stock. What is the upgrade that he have made to the engine tu support all this power ?
Looks like the kids parents bought him the car and gave him money for car parts, and had some shop install them. Kid barely knows what he's talking about.
half the fun of your videos are reading through your no shit given replies to all the asshole commenters who... know exactly what your videos are about but watch it anyway.
The guy's a genuine petrol head who I think gives great reviews and insight into cars other petrol heads like myself would or even do own, I prefer this more down to earth approach it's something new and realistic.
Matt you gotta drive an Innovate/Sprintex supercharged BRZ/FRS. It's a twin-screw supercharger with magnificent torque. I think you would like it just as much as this if not more. With a smaller pulley and and an intercooler, it'll feel way faster than this.
Dude's first car is a manual BRZ and he installs a supercharger on it himself. Seems that he has good taste. My first vehicle was 1981 Datsun 2wd truck. Small 4 banger and 5 speed. It was fun but the kids who get a new/used BRZ as their first car have it so good.
in about 5yrs from now these cars are going to be dirt cheap, and ppl are going to do insane engine swaps its like the fox body. i would want one for a ls swap project in the future. what a great platform.
