@geoffcarr6869

Sorry to say, but he won’t be helping with vision anytime soon. He hasn’t made an innovations. The monkey controlling a cursor has been done 15-20 years ago and by humans because the sensors were external to the body. He response to the question about going deeper into the brain says it all. Currently they go 1-3mm in. Elon respond was, we just need to make the probes longer. Well brain and nerve manipulation is not that easy. First their probes are very thin which means changes in tissue density will cause changes in directions that they can’t control. Then there is navigating around nerves and blood vessels. You can’t control the direction of the probe, so to think you are going to find thousands of straight paths 30mm into your target just isn’t going to happen. Do some research and you will quickly find all he has done, has been do e to others. Why do you think the CEO resigned? Because he was copying research from a scientist that he used to work for. Elon is just an overpromising snake oil salesman. Just look at his autopilot and full self driving. He promised that over 5 years ago, and they are still years away. Look at the semi truck, three years late and it doesn’t have autopilot. Tesla is years away from making that a real choice for consumers. There is no infrastructure for its charging. Anyway, I could keep going on, maybe you have got my point by now.

This is amazing and medically trailblazing. One must use caution in the medical field to make long term patients of spinal cord injury aware that physical recovery is not practical with bone loss, muscle atrophy and other limitations. However I'm excited and hopeful for many! The "fresh" injuries in this case seem practical. Over the years I worked as a registered nurse I contemplated this issue with great hopes it might be practical sooner rather than later! Best wishes!

Technology is (almost) never good or bad, its how its used. -What will North Korea do with neuralink? -When will we have ads streamed into our brains by companies? -How about mind reading, and privacy? We know companies have no issue breaking the law to collect personal date if they think they can get away with it, so how will this affect that? -Could some future version of Neuralink be used in law, to read a persons mind. Thoughtcrimes? -How might propaganda target people? -How might systemic racism and sexism be compounded by whatever technologies emerge? These WILL become issues down the line. Maybe not for a few decades, but itll be issues. There is positive and negative. I certainly dont trust Elon to make good decisions, or MORAL or ETHICAL decisions.

How many brains were ruined before things started working? How do you know a monkey does not have non-stop headaches? How many monkeys had malfunctioning implants causing different brain trauma? Of course these are great successes, however I miss the parts what it really costed to come up to this point.
@alengm
@alengm Год назад
They talked a lot about that in the full video. No brains were ruined (not by neuralink at least. Idk about past research in 20th century). They looked at both how the implants affect the tissue and the behavior of monkeys. The scar tissue is minimal and harmless. After 2-3 years with the implants the monkeys seem fine too. In terms of discomfort, they designed the training and testing procedures to avoid restraints. The animals are motivated by positive reinforcement (food) and can stop the experiments at will by walking away. There is also a new video on the official Neuralink RU-vid channel about animal care but I haven't watched that. Neuralink implants are much less invasive than brain implants that are already used to treat humans with specific conditions. Some cases of epilepsy are treated by drilling a 14 mm thick hole in the brain and inserting a 2 mm wire (deep brain stimulation). In comparison neuralink threads are microscopic and are inserted by a robot to avoid damaging blood vessels. Not that damaging tiny vessels would do much harm to the brain, they would just degrade the signal quality.
@alengm
@alengm Год назад
Apparently, there are accusations from pcrm that a lot of monkeys died with unnecessary suffering because Neuralink and UC Davis didn't follow proper protocols. Even if that's not true, I guess it was naive to assume that such groundbreaking medical research will happen without sacrifices.

22:23 There is a huge difference between mapping the visual cortex and providing stimulus for the visual cortex to "see". Vision is not a simple 1 to 1 mapping in the cortex, different areas process for different things. There are two visual pathways, the dorsal (provides the "what") and the ventral ("what for"). Then each aspect of vision is processed in a different area of the brain, such as contour, movement, colors, stereoscopy and the list goes on and on. Saying that vision will be restored by neuralink devices is extremely far fetched. Someone that never has seen before lacks years of neuronal development (literally billions of neurons have to learn to see before we see) to have the ability to see. This is a snake oil selling.

Give it time . This is enhancing not controlling. We get results for those physically disabled, and it will be one of the most incredible breakthroughs in 100 years. Go for it. ! This is also a fixed internal signal. The zero knowledge backed ideas are pure sci fi fear lol

@@robertenloe9943 Synchron has actually had some breakthroughs, specially for physically disabled, but being able to move a mouse cursor is several orders of magnitude simpler than vision. A blind person will never see with Neuralink, the complexity is several exponential levels more complicated. 1024 channels in the Neuralink does not equal in any form billions over billions of neurons, that take years to organize themselves. Elon saying that blind will see is a zero knowledge backed idea. He can't even keep his animal subjects alive. His promise for Hyperloop is the perfect example of promising the impossible. Human driven Teslas driving at 30mph is quite different than automatous pods travelling at 155mph. How many more years does he need for Hyperloop?
@o2Hayden

@@Adreno23421 he has plenty of projects as you can see. You seem to have an issue with Elon as a whole. We wont get anywhere saying things are impossible. Thats not to say that everything is possible, but your unmotivated attitude is radiant. Saying that its snake oil was an interesting take. Talking about hyperloop as if it has anything to do with this is where you lost me. People can have failed projects but lets not gloss over all of the success. You seem to be a bit critical and it seems to be more than just you disagreeing with something in this video.

@@o2Hayden Of course I'm critical. Musk is promising for blind people that they will see. Who is the person that will tell them that that is a lie? I have a phD in Pyshcology, and worked with vision/visual processing for my dissertation, so I know what motivation for science and discovery is. As for my above example, Synchron has over 2 dozens of peer-reviewed publications and 400 patents. Where is the discovery and knowledge accumulated by Neuralink? A few patents, but no publications anywhere. The (insanely) far-fetched promises that Elon gives are disrespectful to the people that will believe in him. He promises what he can't give, and sorry if I was raised as if lying and shredding peoples hope due to lies is wrong.

I don't think he's talking about seeing with their eyes. I think he means the nuerolink showing the image in their head where they can see it like a thought that a camera is projecting. Atleast that's what I thinking he's talking about. I could be wrong.
