Purslane, Portulaca oleracea, common name also Golden Purslane, has the highest level of alpha-linolenic which is an omega 3 fatty acid which is essential for human nutrition. so easy to grow and is considered a Vegetable, as we grow it in the ground, on my deck garden in container gardening. It is a succulent leafy green vegetable that can be eaten raw or cooked and dried. It is known scientifically as Portulaca oleracea, and has many common names all over the world, some as pigweed, little hogweed, fatweed, The Buttocks of the Wife of the Chief and pusley. ... It has reddish stems and small green leaves. It has a slightly sour or salty taste almost lemony peppery flavor and is also similar to spinach and watercress. Purslane stems are smooth and hairless, Stems are red or green with a reddish tinge, leaf edges are smooth. Purslane plant can be harvested and eaten cooked or raw or made into a tea, all the leaves, stems, and flowers are completely edible. From what I have read, do not offer any to your pet Cat, and because it can be high in calcium oxalates do not feed it to your dog if they nibble on it that may be fine, but do not add to their food.
ASK questions so I can do a follow-up with more photos of the plants growing on the deck and in Gary's garden.

The only one we eat are the ones the grocery stores sell in the produce department, long upright succulent stems that grow very small yellow flowers. They are not usually sold in plant nursery stores those are not the edible variety, they are landscaping plants, container flowers or indoor plants 🌱 do not eat those.

This was such a fantastic video! I found two branches of this thing in a Lowe’s shopping cart in the parking lot when it was 100° out! I stuck them in a water bottle that was half full in my car and went shopping, when I went home I debated whether to throw them away or stick them in water and I thought well I’ll stick it in water what is it gonna hurt and couple days later I noticed 1000 roots growing in the water! They were standing straight up! My picture identifier finally told me what these are and now I’m watching this video! Love it!

If she had the edible Purslane she must’ve had more of the wild one, the one that they cultivate for grocery stores are the ones that grow upright kind of like a bush. But either one can take over as you saw how many seeds they drop. At least it’s a healthy plant to eat. She may not have had the edible one though, she may have had the ornamental plant. 😊

@RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy
@RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy 3 года назад
I’m starting to think that what it may be is where it comes from naturally an animal may graze on it eating from the top swallow, leaves and seeds, it walks away and poop it far away and that may be why the seeds sit on top of the plant since the whole plant is edible. Just a thought 😊❤️🌱

Purslane can be very invasive and take over your garden bed if the seeds are allowed to spread there. This happened to me. I had a beautiful hanging basket of Purslane blooming and growing right above my garden bed. The next spring the whole small plot was covered in Purslane and at that time I didn't know it was edible(also I didn't use any type of pesticides in my small garden bed). It took only one time to rid my garden bed of the hundreds of new little seedlings and I vowed never to purchase Purslane ever again even though it was a beautiful hanging basket. The wind and droppings must have caused the seeds to fall into my fertile ground.
@jlseagull2.060

Those seeds are like uninvited guests. I had have them in my yard and it took me several years to rid them (hand pulling). But this year….they come again taking over my tomato garden. I think they suck up most of the water cuz I have a very limited harvest of tomatoes this time around (last year I got a huge bundle when there was no purslane in sight).
@RC-yb5dp
@RC-yb5dp 3 года назад
@@jlseagull2.060 Purslane suck up the nutrients that the plants need. I hand pulled mine when they were very young the first year and had no problems after that. Maybe there were dormant seeds still in your soil. I hope the Purslane will be gone from your garden soon. Purslane is listed as an invasive weed in some states. I guess a lot of people aren't eating it because it is still proliferating and causing headaches😂😂😂. I cringe Every time I see Purslane and I warn my friends to no avail. They think it sooooo pretty😒😒😒
