- Kara looking up at the balcony and seeing Lena is something straight out of a SuperCorp fanfic! - Let’s just give Melissa and Katie awards now, holy crap. My heart actually broke in that scene. 😭 I hope they hugged it out after filming that, I would’ve. - “You will always be my best friend.” That and the embrace, I was full blown ugly crying. 😭 - Lena while the suit materialized: *”Damn, why didn’t I think of that?”* Also, Kara showed the new suit to Lena first! 🙌🏻 - Theory: I think Lena’s new AI, Hope, is acting like the evil Brainiac from the comics, and is going to eventually control her. Because she goes from soft puppy around Kara, to stone cold whenever she’s around the technology. If that’s the case, this really is going to be a fight for Lena’s soul. Also, when Kara gives the watch to her, it’s *9:15* and I feel like that is going to be a key through the series.
I'll never understand why long term fans of this show are so quick to put people in 'bad' or 'good' categories, Lena especially. She's been (almost) perfectly consistently portrayed as someone who is trying to elevate humanity. Hell from episode... what, 3 of Season 2 she was working on tech to help humans identify aliens amongst them. Not to persecute them but to help humanity compete on an even playing field. She's also very clearly damaged from, well, growing up Luthor. When she finds out this particular truth.... yeah, this is *exactly* how she should react to be true to that character. But even now she's not being evil or looking to do harm to the rest of the world. The issue she does have is every time she's opened her heart it's been broken and the one person she really let inside every wall she had was lying to her from day one. That's going to cause some resentment and Lena just doesn't have healthy coping mechanisms for this sort of thing. What's particularly intriguing though is how quickly Kara's own mistakes are overlooked by fandom. She even spells them out in her confession - that keeping the secret might have started out with noble intent but ended up as a selfish move on her part - and the show does make sure there's consequences for her actions (albeit often in fairly subtle ways). I'd even argue they reflect it in the costuming during the award ceremony. Certainly I don't think it's a coincidence that Kara is in light blue rather than, say, pure white and Lena is in a slightly bright purple rather than black. Both are somewhere in the middle of the moral scale and it'll be fascinating to see how they play this out over the season. What else... the suit looks fantastic! Compare that initial close-up "Pants!" reveal with an almost identical shot of the original suit after she saves the bus. I've always loved the skirt design but the new one is in a different league. Hell Kara's S might be the best one we've ever seen in live action! Melissa was phenomenal here as usual, can't wait for more of her working those sorts of emotional scenes with Katie. Brainy continues to be a delight and... actually, you know what, the entire damn cast is great, let's leave it at that. Oh and whoever put Melissa in that dress for the awards ceremony, there's a pint waiting at the bar of their choosing! Good lord....
Clark Kent And Kara’s killed white Martians, at least one Kryptonian (her uncle) and I’m pretty sure not all of the Dominators made it home. Oh, and Kara’s betrayed her too, remember asking James to spy on her in s3? They’re both doing what they think is right and both heading into some pretty murky waters while doing so. This ain’t as simple as it looks at first glance....
"We're good, right?" "No she's still mad." Yes. No. Yes. Nope. 😅 This episode was definitely packed and quite the emotional rollercoaster. With the trailer for this season I was kind of expecting Midnight to stick around for a little while longer but 🤷♀️ As for Lena, I'm not sure that she sees Kara as Kara anymore. I think she only sees Supergirl now. I'm not sure how that trust can be remedied so she sees Kara again unless she let's her Kara persona bleed through into Supergirl while around Lena so she can see her as a whole person rather than the halves that Lena has seen. I think we're all a little suspicious of that AI. I wonder if that could somehow lead to Brainiac, the bad one in the future.
I think she still sees Kara at times but whenever she's talking about her in a vengeful way she refers to her as Supergirl. I feel like she's having trouble seeing Kara in that light seeing as its much easier for her to hate Supergirl seeing as she's more of a symbol and not someone Lena considered to be her friend. I still think she was being genuine at the Pulitzer ceremony and that she hasn't quite come to terms with the fact that kara and Supergirl are one in the same, despite her knowing it for a while.

Have you seen Smallville ,the slow burn of the friendship between Clark and Lex was the best, cause even if you knew that Lex is the main bad for Superman , you'd still want that their friendship last.
When the suit materializes and supergirl says pants! for a few seconds I saw genuine joy in Lena’s eyes for her, then it disappeared. Deep down Lena still cares.

They did say this season was gonna be a fight over Lena's soul, so I was not surprised. She's also a chess prodigy, it makes total sense that she was so passive-agressive and planned a whole thing to expose Kara. I felt like her speech wasn't manipulative tho and that it really hit her that Kara apologized and that "you'll always be my best friend" seemed real too, 'cause tbh I don't see her thinking about opening up to anyone ever again, so Kara will be the last person she loved. The final scene was... intense, but I liked it. She'll actively try to stay mad at Kara which I guess will lead us to many many scenes of Kara protecting Lena even if she's "the enemy" and vice-versa. Idk I think this plot has potential. I'm here for the obvious queerbait.
I agree.. She is fighting herself internally and it's very painful for her. But she will act out of the norm and I feel she needs to. But she knows that she could never really hurt Kara. The fact that she is this hurt more than when her actual family betrayed her just proves how much Kara means to her. Let's also remember that Lena is not a murder and having killed not just a bad guy but her brother itself must be hitting her hard not to mention that she was only doing it because she was afraid that Lex would go after Kara. She is just going through a lot.
The intro and this episode to me confirm that the simulation is the big bad. I think the AI will try to influence people and maybe will be amplifying their negative emotions and making people fight each other. So I can see lena fighting kara then almost killing her and breaking down afterwards while blaming herself and kara telling her it wasn't her fault
Okay, so my take on this is that the AI has lowkey some control over Lena’s emotion and that the AI will be the big bad villain by trying to control the people that use the VR technology that comes with it
I had that thought, and I hope that`s the case. I`m no supercorp shipper, but I`m a fan of Lena, and turning her into a villain is just the most trite thing they could do.

I think Lena forgave Kara with her reveal and heart felt speech and when she told her she will always be her best friend i believe she meant it, but when she was alone all of the pain came back to the surface and she was to scared to forgive her because she doesnt want to get hurt again and she decided acting as a "Luthor" would would be easier. I think Kara will have to fight hard for Lenas soul to really get forgiveness. And nice to see you again!
Lena is a genius with trust issues. The person closest to her both betrayed her trust and made her feel like a fool. I don't know that she could be more hurt. I imagine she'll get over it as the season goes on, but I get her being pissed and I get an apology (sincere and heartfelt as it was) not making her substantially less pissed.

at the end I think Lena had been angry for so long she was trying to convince herself she was mad but if she were truly mad she would have uploaded the files. history of Lena shows us something will go wrong like say her fancy AI Hope will go rogue and Lena will try to fix/contain it on by herself and Kara will eventually have to come in and save Lena.

This reminds me of Smallville. Lex started off a good guy with some shady side stuff but he believed he was helping others. Then eventually he went psycho because of his family and his best friend Clark's secret. History is repeating itself it seems.

The apology speech by Kara was one of the most beautiful, heartbreaking speeches I've heard in a while, & after that, I believe only the most heartless kind of person would still not forgive Kara. I don't believe Lena is that kind of person, that she could be so heartless as to still not forgive, unless the AI Hope was somehow influencing her behavior on some level, causing her to act out of character. That's the only explanation I buy, unless they have something in mind that I haven't thought of. I think she does believe Kara, & on some level, forgive her, but she can't let go of it that easily.
The fact that Lena is acting vindictic when that is not her nature proves just how much she loves Kara. She has been burned by her own family but these feelings are more intense because she cares for Kara the most. She might close herself off and maybe do things that she might not have done to anyone else but that just goes to show how deep her connection is with Kara.
I'm pretty sure the watch Lena was messing with in the beginning was the one Lex's used to control his exosuit/armor in the last season when he and Supergirl fought in the roof of the Daily Planet
Wonder if Lena's VR is effecting her mind, like a drug, or Hope is influencing her because Lena is still really pissed, wish Kara would kiss Lena already....wonder how betrayed Kara will be when she finds out Lens was going to expose her? So glad you did this - and I agree with all the comments that this was quite the roller coaster ride for a season opener. I thought the acting during the reveal ... and when Supergirl shows Lena her new suit for the first time and Lena‘s expression was priceless. I also was sad with Lena‘s “turning to the Dark side,” but that’s what makes for good television I guess. We shall have to see if their relationship survives this season! Aaagh!
Based on the fact that Jack is coming back(my guess as a simulation) I think Lena''s hurt comes from the fact that Kara didn't tell her but her rage comes from all the tragedy that could have been prevented if Lena was aware of all the information. I am guessing she blames Kara for pretty much everything that has gone wrong in her life in the last few years. For not telling her about Rhea which led to Lena trusting her and allowing the invasion to happen. For Jack's death, for having to kill Lex...for pretty much everything. Unfair for the most part probably but I can see her going into this direction. Lena is a scientist first and foremost and she knows how lacking critical information can be disastrous and she probably blames Kara for the disasters that have befallen her in the last few years
I never cease to be amazed that people think someone is that upset with maybe losing a friend means that they are in love with them. Maybe you dont have a friend like that but there are countless numbers of people who love their friends like family. But of course the fantasy must be kept alive in their heads.
Lena's AI, "Hope" will "break out" and carry out what it perceives as Lena's real desire. It will get out of control and possibly take over Lena. Kara will be put in great danger and possibly appear (much like with Reign and Red Daughter) to have been killed. Kara will prevail and rescue Lena. Lena will then realize that Kara really was protecting her ...
I guess something will go wrong with VR device, Supergirl is going to save Lena's life, so she'll let go of anger. Btw, Supergirl's childish reaction to pants was so cute...and Chyler is so beautiful, I can't...and I want her DEO uniforms. xD

My hope is that Lena is lying to herself more then to Kara. That she will realize that she can’t do it. That she can’t truly hurt Kara. Maybe something will happen and she will realize it. I’m definitely done with the show if the turn Lena in to a evil villain. That would be lazy writing. Just copying the storyline of Superman and Lex. Lena have shown before she is much better then that. She has always been trying to do good no matter what. Making her a true villain would destroy her character and it would destroy the show for me.
One of the reasons why Lena is a popular character is her ability to find balance in her life. She may be a luthor but she s a "different kind of Luthor". She usually finds a way to use the darkness inside her for her purposes without losing herself to it. Lex told her himself *You will always fall into the light* . What we saw in the season 5 premiere wasnt balance, it was lena being just as bad as lex and lillian luthor.
I was sad at the ending but then I was happy cause it might mean more emotional supercorp scenes, maybe a real reconciliation scene, and the season still being centered around their relationship, that's great too... Also Alex&Kelly and Nia&Braini are so cute, just let Kara and Lena get back together so they can be all paired up :')
Every season Lena proofed to be a good and strong person who believes in good and supergirl. They can't tell me they did all of this build up just to make her a villain for what exact reason? Kara told her and yet she can't trust her nor forgive her, even though Kara saved her and always believed in her from the first second!?!? That's bullshit
Spoilers below for a theory. This season is setting Lena up to take on a mantle purely out of spite. Whether the mantle is that of a hero, a villain or an anti-hero remains to be seen even now.
I mean.....Lena isn’t a villain at all. Lol. She’s hurt, she’s upset, she feels she can’t trust anyone and after all of that her plan is just to save mankind. People need to chill and let the season play out. Also, for all we know the VR is messing with her and others minds.

I agree. It was such a great season premiere until that last scene with Lena. I also agree that Lena is inherently good, and hopefully that “villainy” is just a phase. I’m sure she’ll realise soon that that’s not her, she doesn’t want to hurt people. AND more importantly, she’s too smart to be so stupid. If I were her, I’d certainly remember all the times Supergirl saved me and give my best friend the benefit of the doubt, you know? And the fact that Kara told her on her own should be the first step in the right direction. That aside, doesn’t Kara feel that Lena’s reaction to the news is a bit underwhelming? I mean, obviously there is something wrong, Kara. Get it together, woman! 🙃
I'm totally on board with Lena, Kara deserves it because if she cared about Lena as friend she would've told her that she's Supergirl.The all thing "I'm protecting her if she doesn't know my secret identity" is bullshit, because Lena doesn't need to be protected by anyone and Kara should know that. I wouldn't take it that way. I feel she is traumatized by the betrayals of all the people in her life... especially Kara. I do think her feelings while talking to Kara in the last scene and on the coming out scene are real, but are silenced by the feelings of hurt when she remembers and she's been feeding herself those memories for the last month. I REALLY don't think they are making Lena evil. She is traumatized and Lara "will fight for her soul" ;)
I predict the big bad of the season is going to be Hope. Naming your AI is never a good sign. I think that by the halfway point of the season Lena will cool down but then Hope will either be corrupted or stolen and do the plan Lena decided not to do

In this episode before she was giving a speech for Kara to get her Pulitzer that literally looks like a scene from Romeo and Juliet I mean hello that’s a couple people and when they hugged like where they put there hands on each other‘s arms that was seen last season too and when Kara said to Lena that if she could be just Karaso she will be Lena‘s friend because Lena loved Kara and when Lena said Kara broke her heart that sound like a love people honestly this was the gayest episode of Supergirl that we’ve ever seen which I think was awesome because it would be a great ship and even though Lena is angry at Karashe still looks at her the same way and if anyone noticed when Kara’s suit appeared on her body Lena look like she was just about to kiss her in the season I just want to see how long it takes before Lena reveals her plans are before Kara notices I wanna see how long is charade continues because I know Lena still cares about her
I am about three years late to this party, but can I just point out Lena's explanation to Hope? She says that Kara betrayed her, and that she "Broke my heart." If this is not confirmation that Season Five Lena is a vengeful lover lashing out because she is suffering from soul-crushing heartbreak, then I don't know what is.
Bare with me and hear me out!! First: I love your format and think you're on point with a lot of your remarks... however... I am totally on board with Lena as a villain, cause the further a person falls the greater the triumph of their redemption, and this show has repeatedly proven that above all else Supergirl has faith that nobody is ever truly beyond coming back from the darkness, and compound that by the fact that its the person Kara cares about more than anyone else (Save for Alex...) will just make it all that much more amazing to see watch as Lena comes back from the abyss. Also, It is possible for two people of the same sex to be best friends without them becoming romantically involved with one another. I have LOVED the arch that Alex has gone through over the seasons discovering her sexuality and coming out to Kara and her Mom, and I was DEVASTATED when she and Maggie broke up! But I've never thought in the least that Kara and Lena belong together, their dynamic is so opposing to how Lex and Clark were in Smallville with their constant Cat/Mouse interactions was one of the best parts of that show. The Kara/Lena relationship has been one of the slowest burns in all of television with Lena doing more and more season after season that Kara fundamentally disagrees with between developing they synthetic Kryptonite and then the experimentation with the Haronelle all in an effort to prove that she's, as she put it, "not the villain" and now that we FINALLY are seeing some payoff from it I REALLY hope they don't do anything as contrive as trying to force a love story between them. I just dont think it fits within the scope of either character, ESPECIALLY since we've seen them already have incredible and meaningful relationships with men (Mon El and James) to "turn" them Gay at this point in their character arch's I feel would be doing them a great disservice (no matter how much I'd love to see Katie and Melissa make out). All that being said keep up the great work!!
I have a feeling Lena will be pissed until the crisis event and she will probably help and things will happen and then everything will be fine. I don't see them making her an actual villain where she gets murderlized or sent to jail for the rest of her life.
I'm on Kara's side. I'll almost never be on the side of a Luthor. We all knew this was coming and we've read enough comics to know. That being said, let the villainous origin story begin!
I 100% agree with you... The final scene was WAY too out of character for Lena. Having said that, I knew that everything wasn't "good". I knew that Lena would still feel hurt and betrayed (flash back to when they were sitting on Lena's couch together and Lena said that she was scared of who she might become if she lost someone else as "loss does strange things" to her family)....... But this still seemed too much. Like you said, Lena is not a villain. She's always been more than her name. That's what makes Lena so intriguing and captivating, and it's why we love her. If they make her a full villain it would come across as poor/lazy writing to be honest. I guess we'll just have to see how far they choose to push Lena.
Lena is a great liar..because she is lying to herself.. because after what kara said..I feel she forgave kara..she is just not ready to accept that..but she will get there..
I feel like they are faking us out, and we have yet to see the big bad of the season. I think these fake villains arc will be finished by Crisis's end. A crux of this "evil" Lena arc is that she feels like she's different now that she killed Lex. Just wait till Lena finds out Monitor brought him back.
Her intentions are good She wants to remove people’s violent intentions to make a more peaceful society But that’s not how I expected it I thought she would disable the part of our brains that make us violent but not hope possessing people
see, as she has been presented to us, Kara is a person that is, shall we say....a mite on the 'all emotion' side. so when fearing that someone she's considered a close personal friend might toss her aside...I'm surprised she was not MORE upset...it's the problem with people acting things out. they rarely have any notion as to the actual emotions that would be present...and even if they should, time and such would probably not allow it proper space. all in favor of the pairing...but the scene in question fit right in with Kara's personality, in my book.
Lena is not a villain, She's a lot of grey and she doesn't know how to handle feelings and relies on tech. I think that will come to haunt her. The Hope AI will probably do stuff that Lena doesn't want. But as Lena is not very good with emotions she can't exactly teach the AI good behavior either. But I think Kara will fight for Lena's forgiveness and after all Lena doesn't want to really harm Kara but make her suffer and feel the same confusing emotions Lena feels and doesn't understand. The Obsidian Tech CEO that bought Catco (somethingsomething Rojas?) will probably also want revenge on Lena for not delivering on the promise and at the same time will be a pain in the ass of Kara. Then I think Obsidian Tech will have their own tech problems with the AR lenses and VR simulations. Plus J'onns brother and and whoever kidnapped Eve.... there's lots and lots of things that can and will go wrong and adversaries that have their agendas. Looks to be an 'interesting' season.
I think that's the point they're trying to make that lena is always taking the high road.....this time she decided not to take the shit she got from kara because honestly I don't blame lena for being this pissed because kara had no decency when it came to telling lena the truth despite how much she has supported kara and has been right in her arguments with supergirl many times....that being said, I do hope her beef doesn't last that long over the season.
Emily, I've been saying this for years! Lena was always going down this road. She has always had a silver lining in her character/personality. It has ALWAYS been her choice on what side she steps into, and it always came down to those she trusts in her life. Lillian also gave a hint in Season 2 about this. Lena has always had this darkness about her, sometimes nurture over nature wins. Who was Lena trying to convince she was good? herself? her mother? Kara? Lex? the world? Lena was trying to convince herself this whole time she wanted to be good, but in the DC Comic world, you can't walk the silver lining rope.
I don't think Lena is going to be a villain, remember her little tiny boxes? She's doing that, by the way if you notice she never says Kara, she's always saying Supergirl, because she's not dealing with her anger in the right way. She's hurt, for obvious reasons, but I truly believe that she's not going to be the villain, but I do think that her new AI in some point is going to be a problem, and maybe that ties with Leviathan (the big bad of the season) and all that Obsidian VR thing that it's up for nothing good. Supercorp will be fine at some point of the season.
there's also the small matter of Highly Intelligent People being more than a little...off. nobody can ever really tell what they're thinking. I'll say this; Lena is as good as her situation and IQ allows her to be.
10000% hate that they are going to make lena and kara/supergirl at odds once again this whole season. Lena literally wanting to ruin kara's life? not cool. I could never image being like that and feeling that way towards someone I was best friends with who made such a big effort to fix things.
I know the writer's feel that they have to create conflict so that they can resolve it as the season evolves. I believe that is what's driving the whole Lena's feeling betrayed thing. It's lazy writing imo. Lena is an intelligent mature person that would quickly understand Kara's emotions in this situation and forgive her. That whole Luthor/Scorpion comment was OUT OF LINE. If they insist on dragging this out over 20 odd episodes this gay bear will not be happy. Also, I love the pants.
I think her intelligence is the problem exactly. Because Lena's mind is now thinking: What if Kara had trusted me earlier? Would I have trusted Rhea knowing her who she was? Would I have been able to save Jack? Would I have been able to thwart Lex earlier without having to kill him? Would I have been able to help Sam before she had to suffer so much? Her lack of knowledge , knowledge that Kara had has hurt Lena a LOT and I can't see her forgiving quickly
