In this series, we're delving into video game oblivion.
Titles that have, at some point, fallen into obscurity.
Today, we're talking about Superhero League of Hoboken, a goofy and completely ridiculous adventure-RPG hybrid by Legend Entertainment, written and designed by Steve Meretzky in 1995. You know, the guy who made The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy text adventure for Infocom together with Douglas Adams in 1994.

Count me at one of the people who hadn’t heard of this. It looks great though. Id love to see a video on Shannara. I loved the books as a kid, I remember seeing the game only once in a store and I always regretted that I couldn’t convince my mom to get it for me.

I might do this some day. Shannara was probably my first big experience in gut-wrenching decision moments in video games. It was flawed but it did some things absolutely remarkably.

Question is... did this predate Jojo? I'm lazy and don't want to google this late at night. This game came out in '94 I'm pretty sure Jojos was a 90's manga.

I live in jersey, I can confirm that the game is mostly accurate in its portrayal of the northeastern part of the state, especially the horrible contamination and mutant bits.

When you were outlining a game, the 90s kid in me literally tagged it as: "Freakazoid the Point and Click Adventure" which not made me only want to try it out but also made me wish for a modern Freakazoid adventure game by way of Tales from the Borderlands.

oh man, i started playing Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines thanks to you, i'm having a blast playing as a Malkavian, granted ideally you would want to play as any other race that can pass as a normal human first to appreciate the difference, but it's a game with a surprising amount of replayability as linear as it is

It's actually pretty cool you clear out the enemy spawns, kind of like how you can kill all of those disgusting monsters in Undertail.

Best thing about Legend Ent games - an excellent command parser system which would give you lots of funny replies and clues in the text box for the different actions. Much better than a bland 'that doesn't work' message most adventure games used. I highly recommend Shannara, Death Gate & Companions of Xanth aside from SLH.

I was just thinking how this reminded me of Earthbound made through American superhero spoof iconography.... OKAY! If Man-Bear-Pig were a boss fight random monster encounter then my head would explode! LMAO super cereal Plus I do recall hearing of "Bowel Disruptors" utilized in the comic TransMetropolitan by its protagonist Spider Jerusalam.

I loved playing this game so much as a kid! It was released 3 years before I was born, but my dad had a DOS computer he kept around so he could play some games on it, and so I did too. World of Xeen, Masters of Magic, and this were the main three.

I’ve got to say, I’m only on the first minute and you sound so jaded. Saying that superhero movies only focus on the “big leagues” when Iron-Man was a B-list Hero compared to the X-Men, Fantastic Four and Spider-Man. The Hulk was somewhat popular but his books never sold well either. The Avengers comic line was meant all to bring prominence to hero’s whos’ books weren’t sold or just didn’t have the popularity to star in their own book. I dunno if you thought the opening was funny but it just came off as kinda ignorant of those characters place in pop culture prior to the superhero flick boom.

I was dead broke one summer as a younger man and basically stuck somewhere without a car, so I decided to amuse myself by replaying this game yet again. I decided I needed a goal to make it more fun, so I pledged to complete the game with every single hero achieving maximum rank. This required a lot of save scumming and note-taking to maximize the XP yield in each area, plus pawning items to use the brothels to get over the finish line. Pulling it off was so strangely, pointlessly satisfying. I told Meretzky about it (we were on-line acquaintances) and he told me I was a very strange man. Which was fair. Anyhow, great video. Glad to see this game is fondly remembered, as it should be. Everyone should nab it on GOG if they haven't yet.

Doing a playthrough on this. Mildly annoyed RU-vid spellcheck does not recognize 'Hoboken' as a word/name. It knows Pokemon as a word, but not Hoboken.

Honestly, I found the gameplay backward,s or, at least, the difficulty curve. Several party wipes earlier on, but about of a 3rd of the way in, been having little to no trouble surviving.

Thruth is: (super)heros are arseholes. The only difference between them and (super)villains is that the villains don't usually hide behind a mask. That said, I'm going to watch the video now. :D

I have fond memories of this game from all the way back in high school. I can't think of small statues of people's heads without immediately thinking 'Bust of Van Buren', and I don't even know who that is, because I'm Canadian and I suspect League was very USA-centric. Albino Wino still comes to mind over two decades later. Memories of Steroid Men and two-headed toddlers and hostile lawyers who "died" by deciding to chase passing ambulances. Princess Glovebox, with the amazing ability to fold gas station maps. The Bowdlerizer. This game never got the love it did, in fact, deserve. Challenging, funny, and original.

Watched my dad play this game when I was a kid while he watched me play Shannara. I still haven't played Death Gate but now that I know about it I intend to. I definitely remembered this game as a teen though when I created a superhero for a supers game at my local game shop and made Donut Man. Loved that Patreon callout at the end. First time I sat through a list of donors named one by one.

These videos just keep getting better and better, I also love your games from underground series you have started. I know that it covers indie developer's that fly under the radar of the more mainstream distribution platforms on PC, with this said I would love to also see you cover any indie games that are trying to get their games on to consoles old and new 👍🍻
