I'm using Ethernet extensively in my Arduino home automation system for communication with devices distributed around the house, so being able to also provide power to those devices over the same network cable is a big time saver. Until now I've been using a "DIY" approach to Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) with midspan injectors sending about 10-12V down the wire, but I'm now converting it all over to use Netgear switches with 802.3af (48V) PoE support built in.
This episode covers some of the options for PoE with Arduino, and demonstrates how you can do it both in a cheap DIY method and using commercial PoE switches.

I stumbled across this the other night on my iPhone and watched your 3 videos. You have a natural talent for explaining things. I was hoping to see more videos on your microcontroller house project. It looks like some amazing stuff. I hope to get to see the rest of this series unfold.

Great video about PoE Jonathan! Two things worth mentioning which you left out are that PoE switches can then control power delivery to be able to do power management schemes for saving energy, or even just basic remote power cycle which is very important with such a complex and distributed system. The other cool thing is having backup power for the switches to be able to power the network (and your control system) from a central spot without hundreds of power supplies and power bars.

Thank you for these educational clips you've posted on your channel :) Just got myself a arduino kit, and ready for action.

Absolutely reasonable principles here. Thanks for the idea. Since the new wifi security hysteria is on I myself was going to switch to wired peripherials, and you've just solved the issues heven't even came up yet. Thanks.

I messed up! A forum user just pointed out that at 10:30 the 5th example is wrong, I multiple by 50 (for Volts) instead of 10 (for Ohms). Doh! The final number is correct, but the working isn't.

Yes, and the short answer is so that there's no need to maintain a concept of "state". A few people have asked this question and it lead to an interesting discussion on the Freetronics forum about messaging systems and architecture, but unfortunately I can't post the URL in a RU-vid comment. If you search for "Freetronics forum superhouse" you'll get there though

Neat trick using the DS18B20 and its 1-Wire ID as the MAC address. Do you use the sensor outputs in the sketch? Might be an interesting way to have overload protection (or plot in-wall weather trends ;).

Nice work. A question are you using two buttons on your control pads as one button for on and another for off? Any reason your not using them in a toggle fashion if you are?

Actually I sacrificed two! They're the perfect dimensions to hold the PCB the correct distance back for the buttons to be flush with the faceplate. It feels wrong using Lego for that purpose though so I keep intending to print some spacers on a Makerbot.

nice. does the power in the cable affect the data transfer ? how far can a cable run?

Just noticed @ 10:38 the formula V= I x R instead of R = 50 v it should be 10 OHM but curiously the result was true ;) but jokes by side great video, very instructive.

Now, what were to happen if someone were to inadvertently plug the power over ethernet cable into a non PoE device, such as a laptop? Would it be damaged?

@ SuperHouseTV Great video. I got a little confused when you did the voltage drop calculation (V=IR) for the 50v system because you wrote 20milliamps x 50volts, instead of 20milliamps x 10ohms, yet you came to the correct 0.2 volt answer.

He's cheating :), you can see he looks up, he must have pre-worked the sums up above the board, and he wrote the wrong thing down.

Hello Dear please help me. I have an Arduino Mega 2560 board and a KRIDA Electronics 1 channel light dimming board with (+5V/Sync/Gate and GND) terminals. I want dimming level Up and Down by using two push buttons and stay any level of dimming point like 25%/40% or 0 to 100%. Lamp is 230 VAC /50 Hz Please help me to write the Arduino code.

Hello I am a College student and I have a Project study about the automation of lightings and air conditioning. I am using Arduino controller, kindly help me on how to do the wiring diagram and connection and also the materials that need to use in my project and the best part is how to program it for functionality test. Hoping for your prompt response because I need to present it to my professor before December 2015. Thanks and God bless

0,02 x 50 = 1Volt and not 0.2V

Indeed... You'll get the same voltage drop.
@brianvell

That 50 is a mistake. The formula is V = IR, so 0.02 x 10 ohm = 0.2V

woh the etherTen is $56 and the regulator is $29. Are you actually spending $85 for a light switch, or are you getting a discount?
@jonathanoxer5202
@jonathanoxer5202 9 лет назад
David Andersson That's still a hell of a lot cheaper than the $200+ for something like a C-Bus light switch! But yes, I do get a discount because I make them. The EtherTen was specifically designed to use in my light switches, and I designed the PoE regulator when I added some PoE-capable Ethernet switches and needed to make the ET compatible with them.
@irun4fundotca
@irun4fundotca 8 лет назад
+Jonathan Oxer I like how you made something plug and play, you should do a small series on alternative solutions for people who cant buy 5-10pcs EtherTen boards and POE regulators to create a system working on a smaller budget using one EtherTen board , I've been working with basic modules found on ebay, its not as neat and tidy but more affordable for a hobbiest
