From a Let's Play, we want people who are hilariously bad at the game lose in amusing ways and gradually learn to overcome it so we can ride that thrill with them.

I was expecting something like a massive array of Google's TPUs actually playing as an in-game adversary. I mean, we've known since "War Games" that super-intelligent AI will start as a game that destroys the world.

I always want to just create my "perfect evolved-happy-rich civilization", and so many other civs just want to make war... :p Maybe I should have stuck to building fantasy worlds in Legos, huh. At least there I wasn't opposed by a dumb ANI trying to wreck progress... >.

Building a utopia is fun. However it is more fun to crush and eliminate the whole undeveloped world in a virtual fantasy with overdeveloped technology, because they annoy you or because they are in the way of progress and expansion. However I like peace in reality, in Civilization I always become a monster... Actually my virtual subjects people love me to bits, and they don't care that i happened to kill a few billion people in order for them to build fancy new cities.

You made an assumption about what people like when they watch Let's Plays (3:08) "They want to watch people who are really good at the game, win the game" I can only speak for myself here (looking over the other comments as I write this my opinion is paraphrased a few times), but I think watching a personality I like experience a game, win, lose or draw, is weighted many times higher than skill when it comes to what I like in a Let's Play.

That goes to show how a person, not being experienced in a field of interest, might have completely invalid assumptions about the field, which are still rational. I love this example because it is so easy (for us) to grasp his faulty line of thinking, even though he's doing just fine (or even stellar compared to the typical youtubers who can't even spell properly). A classic Dunning-Kruger imho.

Could you guys have someone play a few games where 33%-66% of the AI players actually pursue AI themselves? We need examples of how to navigate that situation. In real life, many nations are headed for autonomous weapons.

Nice mod as far as I can see, thanks for introducing us to it. It seems pretty well integrated with the military buildings. I'd like to see more variants of that trade-off you have to make in it though (like - do we make our power infrastructure guided by AI for better production but some more risk of rogue AI? Do we make our cities more attractive for tourists (BNW addon stuff) for some more risk?) and also more of the nations racing for better AI aspect. Like choosing the kind of bonuses you get on the thresholds, and the bonuses being weaker for every other nation having surpassed that threshold. Just some suggestions from a gamer and hobby designer.

You could have in the menu "84 progress + [? unknown progress among non-allies] out of [? catastrophe between 400-800, do more AI safety research to narrow the limit] Allies tell you their progress, and every game a different threshold is randomly chosen between 400-800, AI safety research will do binary shortening of the range each time. So like it goes down to 600-800, then net bit of safety research you now know it's 600-700, etc.

IIRC, the AI in Civ 5 works off how much military power you have when deciding wars, which is just something like the sum of the strength of all units you currently have. So I think they all just declare war against you because you start off not having that many units, and then you build a bunch of bombers, and then they go "whoops, I think I might not actually want to be at war with you, because now you're strong". Doesn't take into account your potential to have more military strength (i.e. production). Also possible you were the only one with oil (the others didn't seem to have bombers), which I think makes them more likely to be aggressive so they can take your oil off you. It's surprisingly good at simulating real life.

If you have superintelligence available, then I know how to create human behaviour. Make the robot want to achieve a goal, but don't give it an actual goal.

Marvelous Quasar Pork Man Most humans have values that align roughly with those of the humans around them. You have no guarantee that this will be true for AIs.

@@ragnkja lmao I just got this. It's true. But in that case, it's the same for humans. Children deviate from their parents' values most of the time (Since bad and good parenting are split almost 50/50 in the planet). I get what you're saying though. On the flip side, you'd have to specify what kind of AIs we're talking about. The usual Stamp Collector, and a Bottle Cap Collector would definitely be in opposition. But I can conceptualise two AIs concerned with different terminal goals that can still work without hindering each other. (In my imagination that is, reality might disagree)

I never really got deeply invested in this game, for exactly the thing you were encountering; seemingly pointless and ill-advised aggression of the AI, with nonsensical refusal of peace (or giving me _everything_). It made it hard to care about engaging with the AI in any way at all, other than to slap them back into their places when they declared war for the fifth time for no reason that I could tell.

Ironically, when the audio 'fails' at 32:00, it becomes briefly much easier to listen to, since it's in mono.

I watched this on my phone with the Mono Audio accessibility setting on because the feeling of earbuds when sound is only/mostly coming through one is really annoying to me.
