I have this one on order too!! It will be my second hammock from Superior Gear. Awesome stuff! Danny was very helpful and now I agree the 90 is the right lay too!! Good to hear it from you as well!
I discovered years ago that a longer ridgeline was ideal for me. Funny that few on HF caught on to this, but HYOH. I replaced my DH Sparrow and WBBB XLC ridgelines with a whoopie adjustable RL. I actually ordered a standard SG yesterday. I have a Chameleon in Cloud 71 double layer, but I ended up inserting a single layer 1.0 hexon Chameleon inside the hammock due to concerns the Cloud fabric might snag and run. I can pull out the 1.0 hexon hammock if I want to go UL with just the DL Cloud Chameleon because I really like the translucent Cloud fabric.
I've hammock camped in the smokies where I have started with the under quilt to the side and no top quilt and as it cooled down- pulled the under quilt in place. A little later as it got even colder, I put a top cover on. So modular and deployed when needed.
This set up looks great! If I hadn't already jumped on the suggested Trailheadz Cloud 71 poltergeist and Loco Libre Operator 50 quilts I would have purchased this for sure. Always love your videos!
I try to follow the 45 degree trick, I come close but the Ridgeline on my Chameleon is long. I use grab and twist over with my full hand to set the ridgeline. Best lay and sort of close to the 45 angle but the best flat lay for me. And have slept in my chameleon every night for over a year. Almost 400 nights of testing. 12.5ft hang points. Works well on up to 25 ft trees also.
All of those things are guidelines or tricks to help people find an approximate hang. If you have yours dialed, roll with it! Sounds like you have more time in yours than most do, so I’d say you know what you’re doing! Good stuff! Thanks!
I bought the complete package with a upgraded 14 foot tarp. Now looking into snake skin for tarp. What size snake skin do I need? The tarp is a 14 foot not 12 footer. The largest I have seen is 12ft 6 inch. Would that still work?
Great post. A total game changer with Cloud71...AND...for those who don't like to fiddle with a separate uq. What's the outer layer fabric type? Is it durable enough not to need a protector?
No calf ridge is awesome, same with no air gaps! I'm interested, but need to evaluate the weight vs some of my other set ups. Better than the Sheltowee integrated system? Thanks!
I like the idea of an integrated quilt, but if you have hammocked for a while, getting your uq set up isn’t hard. The downfalls like moisture, washing, damage will all be magnified with the integrated uq. Being able to take your uq off to wash, repair, or even change due to temperature is more important to me. It has a place, just isn’t for me. Thanks for the review.
Interesting ... espacially the idea of a longer ridgeline ... do you still use 30 degrees at the suspension and how much looser ist your ridgeline then?
@@SpiguyverBackpacking1 Crazy!?! I nearly can't believe it. Does the Superior Hammock have a special shape or cut? Have you tried it with an other hammock? Maybe I should test it with my Chameleon (Cloud 71) and my Hammockgear Netted (Hexon 1.6).
@@SpiguyverBackpacking1 I'll test it but I think the Problem will be the Bugnet ... but first I have to check if I have enough Amsteel at home ... ;-) Maybe I could connect 2 whoopie slings for the test ...
I could see this hammock great in the winter when you need a set cold weather bottom quilt. Other than that definitely not for me, I like to change things up too much.
Great review.. I am getting ready to pull the trigger on this hammock.. just trying to decide between 30deg and 45deg.. realistically, what was your experience with the 2. I probably wont go much below 28-30..
What's the width of your 11-footer? Also is that long cord from the UQ protector to the continuous loops necessary? Wouldn't cinching the UQP ends seal everything up?
Mark, have you had any issues with the cloud71 fabric such as excess static, snags, tears, etc.? I have read on hammock forums about some objectional static and actual failures with single layer hammocks made with this fabric. Since it is such a new fabric I am concerned about its durability. I have ordered an Elite with the cloud fabric but am considering switching to his standard fabric. With such a large financial investment I want this hammock to be long lasting. What do you think?
Sorry for the long time to respond, so far no issues with the cloud fabric at all. I've got it on I think 5 different hammocks right now, nothing I'd say is a downside for me.
Hey Mark. How do you find this compared to the Chameleon ? Im using my Wide with a Burrow underquilt and am trying to decide if i shoukd just buy a Wookie for my XLC (for my kids to use), or buy an 11' Superior for both myself and my kids to use. Just not sure how its gonna lay for me. Im 6'2" 215 lbs and broad like you. Your suggestions and input would be appreciated.
That's awesome! I think I'll really consider the superior hammock for the 15⁰ version. Having the integrated UQ looks like it'd be best for cooler seasons. I like using my double layer hammock with no UQ in the summer, I feel like using a cloud71 hammock with a vented UQ is just asking sqeeters to get you, but I've never tried it, what do you think? Hopefully that makes sense
These are really simple and have better coverage than normal under quilts. I get that they are not for everyone, but I think for those that have had gap issues, or bad setups on their quilts, this is a plus.
