NEW in June 2012: I have a sequel to this video on RU-vid titled, "Superliner Roomette Tour 2.WMV"
I put this video together during a trip in October 2011 on the Empire Builder train from Chicago to Seattle. I have seen several good videos showing what a Superliner Roomette is like, but many are poorly lit or are washed out by too much light. Others don't have any other views of the Superliner car, or fail to differentiate between the roomettes in Superliner versus Viewliner cars. I hope my effort here might answer some questions that other videos miss. Sorry that my night-mode views of the roomette are still darker than I had hoped.
NOTE: This is a Superliner Sleeper car. Most long distance trains south and west of Chicago have this kind of car.
Most trains to the east of Chicago use the similarly named "Viewliner" sleeper car, which has only one level. The roomettes are similar, but on the Viewliner the seats are narrower and there is a tiny washbasin/sink and a toilet in the roomette. Although at first glance it seems preferable to have the Viewliner Roomette's toilet, I would rather have the Superliner Roomette's larger seats and have a toilet outside the roomette.
I mention that scanner frequencies for AMTRAK routes can be obtained on-line. Here is where I get mine: www.on-track-on...
Corrections/additions (May 2012):
1) The Superliner downstairs has two toilets (not counting the one in the accessible/hanidcapped room), not the three I said were there. Of course there is also the other toilet upstairs. I have never seen these busy, although the shower downstairs might require a wait of a few minutes in the morning. Flip-flops or other foot covering are pretty much mandatory for shower use, both to prevent things like athlete's foot, but also for traction on a wet floor in a moving train.
2) The speaker in the roomettes does work, but in my experience it has only worked for announcements from the conductor and diner car management, not for any other sounds.
3) AMTRAK (and other passengers) seriously frown on passengers making noise that disturbs others. If you have a radio scanner like the one I show, keep the roomette door closed while the radio is on, and turn the radio off when you are not in the room. If you have any music with you, headphones are pretty much mandatory.
4) The downstairs luggage rack is not secure, althought the sleeper car attendant knows who belongs in the car and who does not belong, and he/she is usually by the car's outside door when stopped at stations, so theft is unlikely. Don't put anything too valuable in bags left here. The room and roomette doors latch from the inside, but do not latch from the outside. I suggest not leaving anything like a purse of camera sitting right on a seat when you are out of the room, and if you are going to be gone for long, I suggest closing the curtains so people passing by can't see in to your room to know if you are in there or not, or to see what you might have left laying around. Still, only other sleeper passengers and train officials can be in the sleeper cars, so there is very little chance that anyone would steal anything from a room.
5) If you have a GPS, change it to 'walking' mode or equivalent, as opposed to the usual 'car' mode. This way it should not always try to place you on the nearest road, and hopefully will give a more accurate display of exactly where you are.
6) The car attendant will configure the seats and beds between daytime and nighttime modes for you, so you don't need to deal with raising and lowering the upper bunk, and he/she will also make the beds, moving the extra mattress to the lower seats to make up that bed.

I had one of these for my trip from Whitefish to Chicago! The shower on board the Empire Builder was also very good, the food was excellent. A memorable overnight trip.

You totally remind me of my dad. He was an avid train fan and most every trip we took involved a train, starting with Sothern Pacific when I was about 5 or six, then Amtrak later. We did the Emeryville to Reno trip many times in coach, and a Phoenix to LA trip, then LA to Oakland in a family sleeper. My dad always had his handheld scanner with him (when they came out) and other passengers often asked him if he worked for the rail road. My sister & I would be so embarrassed as teenagers, now we just miss him and wish we could do it all again (he passed in 2003). My sister and I are travelling to Reno from Sac. on the 12th in a roomette, and that is why I am now watching your video. Thank you so much for all of the good information.

Much more informative than others I've seen. We are going round trip between Denver and Chicago next week in a roomette. This has really helped me understand to bring a SMALL bag to take with you to the room and leave everything else in the luggage area downstairs.

Terrific video. Your descriptions mirrored my experiences exactly when I took the Southwest Chief a couple of years ago. Watching this video makes me want to take another trip. I'm also glad to see I wasn't the only nut who brought his Garmin along. I thought it was interesting to log the trip details...elapsed time, average speed, and top speed (which was 94 mph overnight).

Very thorough tour! My partner and I journeyed to Los Angeles last year aboard Coast Starlight and we opted for a superliner bedroom. It was about the same price as first class aboard Air Canada but much more enjoyable. I thought Amtrak was pretty good value considering all you get with a room, and the train staff made us feel like royalty. Plus at my age I want to see where I'm going, and have fun getting there. I am sold on train travel and we want to do "one lap of America" by rail in 2013.

Dear Mr. Youtubba. I have really enjoyed the videos you have produced. I think I'll be taking a ride on Amtrack very soon. That is if I can get the Deluxe bedroom. Thanks for the trip reports.
@youtuuba

I don't know of any Deluxe Bedroom. However, AMTRAK does change their names for the rooms from time to time....you probably mean the kind of room that is usually called a "Bedroom". Be aware that whether you choose a Bedroom or a Roomette, almost all of the experience is the same. The same view, same window, same meals, same trip, same ride. The bed size and comfort is essentially identical between them. The main thing you are paying for with the Bedroom is having a toilet, shower and sink in the room with you, instead of just down the hall a few paces. And for that, you have to pay a lot more money, and in some ways the Bedroom actually gives a lesser experience than the Roomette offers. For instance, as least on a Superliner sleeper, the Roomettes can be sure to be free of urine and fecal residue, since there is no toilet within splash or spray distance, whereas having toilet facilities in the Bedroom (and on Viewliner Roomettes as well) means that there will be some of that stuff in the carpet and upholstery, or certainly a lot more than there would be if the toilet and sink were NOT in the room. And in the Bedrooms, there is virtually no room between the bed and the sink cabinet, so if you want to keep the bed down and still get out of the room, it is much more difficult in the Bedroom than in the Roomette. So consider your real needs and choose wisely.

I took the auto train from Orlando to D.C. a few years ago and had a roomette heading north and a full size room heading south. What a difference! What you didn't point out and I will, is that when you book a roomette, the beds are parallel with the rails, which means you sway side to side, hence the "safety belt" for the upper bunk. In the full size rooms, the beds are the same as the rail ties so your swaying is greatly reduced. I am a huge train buff and most of the tracks on the auto train are welded so you don't hear the clickety clack, but look out when you go over switches or trestles! I swear we were starting to derail! That was on the way to D.C., on the way back I had none of those fears. I am seriously thinking of taking the train from Orlando to Glacier Park in the Spring of 2015. It's a 3 day trip, but I think I'll manage! Your video was great! Very informative.

Great video. I had several questions that I contacted Amtrak about several days ago and have not received a reply about. I'd E-Mailed them hoping they'd take the time to research the questions and give me accurate information versus giving me the answer they think I want to hear when I call on the phone and they feel pressure to give me an immediate reply. Your video answered every single question I had. As I get closer for my long trip with a roomette I find myself repeatedly coming back to re-watch your video to see what little tidbits I may have missed the first time around. I've watched both of your roomette videos a few times now and can't wait to get on the rails this coming week. Thanks again and safe travels!

+Robert H - I NEVER contact Amtrak by any method other than the telephone, and I ALWAYS make my reservations by phone. There are many advantages to doing it by phone, including being able to select a room location within the sleeper car, something the on-line system does not let you do....if you prefer upstairs or downstairs, only the phone reservation person can set that up for you. They can also get you a room on one side of the car or the other , if you have a preference, but since sometimes the so-called "consist" (how the train is assembled from the various engines and cars) can vary, you can't be sure that they won't put your car on backwards, so your reserved right becomes left, or vice versa. But at least you can get upstairs or downstairs by talking to them.

I absolutely love taking the train, and do so as often as possible for work when I travel from DC to the Northeast. I truly can't understand why it is so expensive though, trains tickets are often double the price of flying. If you are going anywhere that is long distance, the train can take well over 24 hours (understandable) but cost so much more than a flight that would be 4 hours. I've always wanted to do the Empire Builder, but can't justify the outrageously high cost. :-(

I very much doubt that Amtrak would allow the use of E-cigarettes. True they don't have smoke, but they still have vapor that contains what many consider to be harmful chemicals, and even if not harmful, they may still have odors that might be objectionable to others. Even with the roomettes and bedrooms, the air supply is in no way isolated, and even with the partial privacy afforded by compartment partitions, anything that can waft around by air and shared with others nearby would be a problem

Hi! I always lok at how much something is worth, rather than how much it costs? I think first class on a train is a better price value than first class on a plane, plus more relaxing?? Just my opin, of course :)
@SeaToby11
@SeaToby11 12 лет назад
The problem with airlines is that they pack you in them like sardines. A sleeper may be expensive, but when you consider you are trading hotels expenses with sleeper expenses it isn't much more. With a sleeper the diner food is included, with no gas to buy while driving. Let the engineer drive. Plus the diner food is better than airline food.
@SeaToby11
@SeaToby11 10 лет назад
Yes Nordi,,, a sleeper accommodation is first class for the overnight trains. Meals in the dining car are included with a sleeper accommodation fare, but like everyone else aboard the train the snacks and drinks in the cafe car are not. Amtrak does provide water and coffee in the sleeper cars with the fare. Coach passengers don't have access to the sleeper cars, Amtrak uses the dining car as a gate.

@youtuuba
@youtuuba 8 лет назад
+MsMalika64 I have ridden in both Amtrak and ViaRail roomettes, with and without a toilet/sink in the room. Having done both kinds, I much prefer NOT having the toilet in the room. On the Amtrak Viewliners (with toilet), the beds and seats are quite narrow in order to make room for the toilet. On ViaRail, the bed and seat are wider, but the bed covers the toilet so you have to fold up the bed to use the toilet during the night. On either, any 'mess' you make, whether it is odor, 'urine spray', water from the sink, gets on your floor, bed, seat, etc; and is with you for the whole trip. When you have a Superliner roomette (no toilet), you use the toilet down the hall, but your personal space stays clean and dry and odor free.

It really feels like way more space than it looks. Even with another person, it never feels cramped. I've taken Roomettes on I think 12 trips of over 30 hours, and it's super comfortable. Plus, you can always walk around. I would say maybe take a short (around 3 hour long) trip in a Roomette, and see how it feels. A short ride will be pretty cheap, and from there you can determine if you want to take a long trip.

While a roomette is considered first class, there are larger bedrooms, one being a family bedroom with four beds. There is also a handicap bedroom as well. Europeans see our roomettes like a coffin, but before the roomettes American trains had slumber sleepers, rows of bunks contained only by curtains. The full sized bedrooms are of a similar size as the bedrooms of the Caledonia sleeper train to Scotland.

But Sleeksilver you save at least one night of hotel and meal expenses with Amtrak, sometimes two nights in the west. When you add these expenses to a air fare, Amtrak prices do become much more comparable. At least Amtrak don't pack you in like a sardine, even in coach. Of course if you are willing to sleep in a coach seat you can save much more.

You have some great and informative videos; the fiance and I are going from Chicago to Sacramento, and then Portland to Chicago for our honeymoon in October. I was wondering if at night you are allowed to move about the train as you are in the day. For example, are passengers allowed to go to the lounge/viewing car at 2:00am if they want?
@youtuuba
@youtuuba 7 лет назад
Michael Singer, my reply is probably too late for you, but the train is open all night. You can leave your room or Roomette and wander the aisles, sit in the lounge car, sit in the cafe at the tables (although the cafe itself will be closed). They might even let you sit at tables in the dining car, but that would be up to the discretion of the crew.

How many inches would you say separate the two seats when they are in the daytime position as seen in the video? We're taking Amtrak in May and we're bringing our two kids and we're hoping to put a pack n play (for our baby who will be 15 months at the time of the trip) in the roomette so that we have an option for a nap. He'll sleep much better in a roomette than in coach.

+youtuuba I have a question that was a superliner room met correct also while having that room you are allowed to shower
@youtuuba
@youtuuba 7 лет назад
Isiah Rosales, the room shown is a Roomette, of the type that is found in the Superliner sleeper cars. These Roomettes do not have toilets, sinks, or showers. However, in the same Superliner sleeper cars are a few Bedrooms, also called Standard Bedrooms, and THOSE are larger and have the toilets, sinks and showers in them. If you stay in the smaller Roomette, you will be able to use the three restrooms in the same car (two are downstairs and one is upstairs), and downstairs there is also a shower room that can be used by one person at a time. Keep in mind that each Superliner sleeper car has 14 Roomettes, with a maximum of two people each, but one of those is used by the car attendant, so there is a maximum of 27 people sharing those three restrooms and one shower. This means that there is almost never any need to wait for a restroom, and if you have to wait for the shower it is just a few minutes.

I would imagine that it would be wise to opt for the 'lower level' roomette. So that the upper bunk person would have more space. Considering that the tops of the train car curve inward, which explains the upper bunk not folding flat against the bulkhead in your room. Am I right???
@youtuuba
@youtuuba 8 лет назад
+Antonio Vazquez There is no difference with the upper bunks as far as I can tell. Lower level rooms have a somewhat different 'vibe' to them: - A person who has issues with stairs or standing/walking on a swaying train might prefer a lower level roomette, as they can just walk on from the platform and then only a few steps to their roomette, without any stairs. And there are two toilets only a few steps away on the same level, and the shower is also right there. But if you want to move to other cars, such as the diner car, the lounge car or cafe, you would then need to go upstairs. Your car attendant can bring your meals to your roomette if you don't feel up to climbing the stairs and/or doing long walks on the train from car to car. - But the lower level is noisier, outside the room is more utilitarian looking than what the upper level looks like. - Upstairs roomettes are the way to go if you want a better view of the outside, and easier access to other parts of the train. If you have an upstairs room, you only need to use the stairs one when getting on the train and once getting off the train, and you can do everything else by staying on the upper level (except use the shower, which is downstairs). - Upstairs roomettes feel a bit more 'private' somehow, possibly because they are quieter and you feel less vibration, but also because you can leave the window blinds open without everyone outside seeing in (at station stops, road crossings, etc).

@cpotisch

If I book a superliner or viewliner, traveling solo, will I be stuck staring at a stranger in the seat across from me? Seems like it would be awkward.
@youtuuba
@youtuuba 7 лет назад
David Klausa, I thought I covered this, but maybe it was in one of my other train videos. The answer is that AMTRAK never has strangers sharing the same room in a sleeper car, and it does not matter what kind of room it is. All sleeper car reservations are considered to be 'first class's, and this means when you are in your reserved room there are no other people in that room unless they are traveling with you and also assigned to the same room as part of your reservation. It is not like you see in some movies where train passengers are seated in a room with a few other people, staring across the room at hand of them. And if you are traveling alone and reserve a room in a sleeper car, you will be the only person in that room. Privacy! However, in a typical sleeper car you will have more than one kind of room. In a Superliner room such as I show in this video, there are four kinds of rooms (Roomette, Bedroom, Family, Accessible), and only the Bedroom and Accessible rooms have their own private toilet, so Roomette and Family room passengers use the three 'common' or 'public' restrooms in their sleeper car (just like you would on an airplane, just with far fewer passengers, so cleaner and usually no waiting). The same thing applies to the shower; there is one shower per sleeper car, and it is shared by the small number of Roomette and Family room passengers in that car. Passengers who pay more for the Bedroom have their own private showers.

The travel time is 24 hours versus two hours flight time, plus check in, security, etc. If it weren't far more costly than a first class ticket on a airliner, I'd go for the relaxed way of traveling and being treated to a sit down meal instead of a peanuts and a cup of soda. Plus some roomettes have a toilet in each one for the ultimate in "close celled living".

Yes. It's ok but it still serves its purpose.

Many areas of the country have areas that don't support wi-fi ... like out in the boonies, across the deserts, and in the mountains ... but in & near larger cities, for the most part, yes ...

Maturity does not resolve poor camera work or low resolution video.

Wil W, but maturity DOES involve sticking with useful or worthwhile things and pursuits even if not all aspects meet your spoiled, arbitrary specifications and preferences. This is not a National Geographic program, but it DOES address and answer most of the questions people ask about these trains, and when it was made, no other video on RU-vid had all of this information. So, if a mature person wishes to have the content, they will put up with lower video quality. And if a mature person finds that the subject or content does not interest them, they will stop watching but will not bitch about it. What an immature person does is watch it, but then blame lack of interest not on the content, but on superficial shortcomings.
