Oh man you guys would hate some of the ways the newer comics portray Superman. Some even turn him evil?? Steer clear of those. Aren’t these movies supposed to instill hope and inspiration into the every day man? All of you preaching that theme seem to also simultaneously attack newer mediums that don’t copy paste this exact movie formula. All Superman movies are great retellings, and each one differs from each other in subtle ways to stand out. Reeve would’ve loved each movie that came after him; or at least, this Clark would’ve. If you don’t like it- appreciate the oldies. There is no point in berading Snyder and Singer. And for what it’s worth, I think Superman Returns almost beats Superman the Movie.

"No Sir, don't thank me, warden. We're all part of the same team!" I don't think I can emphasize how great it is that this is the final line of the film. This is the thought that the audience is left with as they leave the theater to go home. Superman's great, but we can all be just as great as him. We can be a great people; we wish to be. We only lack the light to show the way.

Totally agree with you! This film and Reeve's interpretation of the character was spot on. Superman is our modern day re-telling of every religious parable from every religion: the "son/prophet/re-incarnation of god" being sent to earth to unite humanity and make sure what happened to Krypton doesn't happen to the human race. I think Richard Donner and Chris Reeve were the closest in getting to that core point of the character. In my opinion, what most non-Superman fans don't understand about this character is that despite his virtual omnipotence, his greatest fight is in his struggles to stop people being nasty to each other. I may be alone in saying this but I didn't quite like Gene Hackman's "comedic" interpretation of Lex Luthor, arguably the greatest comic book villain of all time (better than the Joker or Magneto). Lex is an academically brilliant, disgustingly wealthy and politically influential man who believes that not all human life is worth the same and falsely believes himself to be saviour of mankind, whose hatred of Superman is on the same lines as xenophobia and racism. He doesn't understand Superman's altruism and benevolence. He sees Superman as the refugee (albeit a physically powerful one) from a failed world who has come to earth to tell people what to do and how to behave towards each other.

However, it's unknown whether they finished filming that scene with Christopher Reeve in his wheelchair and deleted it out of the movie because he passed away or they never got to do it because of him passing away. I would guess if they finished filming it but deleted it because, I learned that Heath Ledger who played as the Joker on "The Dark Knight" passed away in real life and a lot of people said that he died on "The Dark Knight" but, they deleted that out of the movie because of feeling how sad it was that he passed away in real life.

I still believe the fourth installment had some unrealised potential. But it was a bad mix of things. Movie was done by Cannon Group, who were notorious for making action movies on a semi-low budget. Doing a Superman movie, that is bound to contain many special effects shots, needs a shit load of money to look good. Chris Reeve was one of the writers behind the movie. Even though he had respect for the character, he made Superman a bit too powerful. I mean... Rebuilding the Great Wall of China by just staring at it? Man, if he actually could, he'd make a lot of construction workers unemployed. The pacing was off and the whole notion of Superman meddling in American (and world) politics should be a no-no for Superman. If Superman IV was to be remade today on a proper budget and a few things were to be revised (like Nuclear Nails guy being more of a threat - the shadow is his weakness?! 🤨 Stupid ass weakness), I'd claim it could turn into quite a decent movie.

2:44 at first when I first watched this whole movie, I really believed that Lex did had hair. Now seeing this...well...I just cracked up just seeing him take off his wig in a very funny way.

God I love that iconic theme music this takes me back to my childhood... Superman is by far the greatest superhero of all time I just can't believe the idiots at WB aren't making a Man of Steel sequel a major priority SMFH

The reason Christopher Reeve will never be matched as the representation of Superman was not because he was great in the cape but great in the glasses. He added a level of humility to the role which really made the character and the movie so great.

Close to the perfect superhero movie. Awesome score, excellent special effects (with some exceptions), and every role cast perfectly. Has its flaws: too long by 30-40 minutes, some of the earthquake scenes look cheap, and we wait almost 45 minutes to see Superman. Still, every superhero movie since 1978 owes a debt to this masterpiece.

Think I read somewhere that Derek Meddings left to make Moonraker, so some of the iffy effects like the dam were done by a different crew, hence crap looking. Also pity the front projection didn't use larger format film in order to reduce the grain and obtain a sharper image..

Those pre-superman scenes sowed the seeds for his rebellion against Jor-El in the climax, choosing to side with his earthly father, Kent. Without those scenes, his climactic decision wouldn't have much weight.

This scene was really weird especially him playing the piano and about to feed Ms. Teschmacher to what sounds like several big cats right before Superman comes flying in and saves her and then takes Lex and Otis straight to a prison that oddly enough looks just like Alcatraz even though the prison was closed down by the time this movie was made.

I remember, years ago, telling people about this scene (saving Miss Teschmacher) and being told that it never happened. It's nice to finally see it again, after so many years, and realize that I'm not nuts, after all...LOL
