Rewatching this scene, it's a lot less of Superman being petty enough to seek vengeance against some random truckstop goon and more him humbling a bully and putting him in his place for the sake of the rest of the diner, which is a very Superman thing to do. The fact that he apologizes to the owner and pays for the damage is what puts it over the top.

In the past I've seen people say this was uncharacteristic of Superman. I'd disagree with that. Aside from "petty revenge," I think it's Superman being the protector of the little guy. The grown man "bully" was fully willing to physically attack somebody, as he did to Clark earlier in the film when he didn't have his powers, so Clark figured the guy either has done that in the past or will likely do it again in the future, seeing as the guy routinely antagonizes the staff and other patrons.

Something to point out he simply humiliated the guy but in the end he's still alive to regret he picked on someone. I almost felt like the way he approached Rocky that superman felt a little apprehension given the look on his face and the way he walks up to him. Even though he knew he was superman and this was just a human being it was still the guy who had beaten him up and made him bleed. Something that he had not really ever experienced in his life. I think he had an irrational concern however small that somehow his powers might not work on this guy and he was trying to overcome that unfounded fear. He did this not only for everyone at the diner but also to get closure for himself and the trauma he experienced.

I've always liked this scene because it reveals just how human Clark is. Despite being an invulnerable Kryptonian, he is not immune to feelings of vengeance. Jor-El would have never gone out of his way to seek some petty revenge like this on some random trucker in the middle of nowhere. Jor-El was an intellectual and was focused on the big picture of things. Clark cut differently because he was raised on Earth, and it's this dichotomy that makes Supes such an interesting character.

notice the mixture of non-violent retaliation and light comedy: "oh, I've been...errr, working out" . You can't help but smile or laugh at that and Clark's goofy delivery. The way he takes care of the bully is done without any need for overt violence or nastiness, in today's cinema he'd be smashing his face in a mirror until a bloody pulp or done darkly. Here he just writes another wrong with a few deft 'Superman' moves. I miss those days, there's a mixture of innocence and entertainment that's lost on today's culture, or maybe...I'm just getting old haha! Either way it's an iconic scene and everyone feels vindicated that the bully got his just desserts....out with the garbage. "Garbage eating garbage"

Had one kid that would hassle me in school. Say all kinds of crap to me. I just took it but then one day on the bus he made the mistake of kicking the bag I was holding. Physical abuse was a red line for me. I would take a lot of verbal abuse but if you laid hands on me it was different. I instantly reacted without thinking about it. Jumped over into the bus seat he was sitting in and punched him right in the head with enough force that it caused his head to slam up against the window then I went back to my seat. That was the last time I had any problems with that idiot.

"Diner Revenge Scene" No, no, not _revenge._ Superman is not vengeful; that's not at all in the vocabulary of his character. That was _justice,_ which is very much a part of Superman's character. A vengeful Superman? ??? That does not compute-- that's not Superman, never has been and never should be. You must be somehow confusing Superman with maybe The Dark Knight, which are...not easy to confuse. ???

@BringerOfTheTruth : Mild-mannered _Daily Planet_ reporter "Clark Kent" is Superman's disguise, not his "human side." Superman's character remains as Superman and Clark Kent, both. He was motivated by a sense of personal _Justice_ , not personal _Vengance_ as the video's title erroneously suggests.
