I first saw this when I was three. Nuclear Man scared the heck out of me. I remember when he scratched Superman and I shouted “NO” and spilled my popcorn
Thanks to this clip of Mark Pillow's voice I'm reimagining this film with Mark Pillow's voice with SFX filters to make it menacing in an original and supernatural way.
You're not the only one. Hockey as the effects and some of the acting was, it had a great idea. It was just executed poorly, but who cares. I loved watching a pissed off Nuclear Man attack Superman growling and snarling.
I liked Superman 4 Christopher Reeve and Mark Pillow battling it out! Gene Hackman was great as Lex Luthor Superman The Movie Superman 2 Superman 4 Christopher Reeve will always be Superman to me John Carter as Lenny he always made me laugh. DESTROY SUPERMAN
I knew something was wrong with flying effects and some new powers but I really enjoyed it as kid. As far till now I enjoy all movies of superman 1 till 4 coz of christopher reeve.
I really think that nuclear man was one of the best coolest villians in movie history... he was one scary character and looked cutting edge. The special effects around him were pretty awesome and were the best effects in the movie.. All the other effects were bad..Apart from some of the the take off scenes done by superman.. Very underrated it's such a shame this didn't help mark's career... We have to blame cannon for using the S4 budget on master's of the universe. If this film was on full budget it would of been a great movie.
I enjoyed his performance as Nuclear Man despite the movie turning out the way it did. He looked very menacing and synched perfectly with Gene Hackman's voice dub.
When you watch a movie like this you have to let your imagination go, that is the only way you can truly watch it / enjoy it, just think you're on another planet.
I remember listening to the commentary on the Superman IV DVD and the head writer Mark Rosenthal said he wanted Mark Pillow to do the commentary with him but no one knew where he was.
I know even Christopher Reeve said in his book "Still Me" that "Superman" 4 was a disaster. But in all honesty, I didn't think it was so bad. I kind of liked it. I thought it dealt with some relevant issues of the time. Whether it was Superman's right to intervene, etc. It also underlines how some people profit from keeping the fear of the destruction of the earth alive. Also the fight between Superman and Nuclearman was well done. I really don't think this was a bad film.
@eternalhalloween1 Exactly. By the way, I enjoyed Rocky V also, unfortunately it takes Balboa out of the ring but it has a lot of interesting stuff like the after effects of fighting Drago, Rocky having to go back to the streets because he loses his fortune, the family problems, and then at the end we see Rocky standing up to Gunn while knowing that any of the strikes could potentially kill him... thats great stuff.
I first time I saw Superman IV: The Quest for Peace, I was 10 years old and I was in Sri Lanka, my uncle/my mum's brother had it this film on a VHS cassette. I remember getting scared watching every scene with Nuclear Man thinking before Doomsday, Nuclear Man murdered Superman
I could see him being Shazam or Captain America back in the day if any of the studios had the RIGHT ppl on board, and I'm talking top-notch writers and directors. He sounded very laidback, calm, and chill, and I didn't even know he sounded like that because I always thought of that shitty dub.
Mark Pillow is probably off selling 5 million dollar houses, or cars, or something. He kinda looks like a young David Hasselhoff with a blonde wig. The Nuclear Man costume was the scariest part of the movie !!!
If they had finished the movie with a budget more matched to the first three, then this one would have been WAY more awesome than it turned out to be: having ACTUAL New York location shootings instead of England with fire hydrants and pigeons; eliminating the European spelling errors; making a better "love rectangle" conflict between Clark/Superman, Lois, and Lacy; and having a villain that Zod would even kneel before!
Yep, he lives there. Not too far away from where I live either. Would be tempting to try and meet him someday, but he probably wants his privacy respected so who knows. Hell, I don't even know what he looks like now.
Mark Pillow looks like a younger David Hasselhoff, & I think he played the priest in the " Boy's Town " scene at the end of the movie as well as Nuclear Man with his Nuclear Manicure.
@eternalhalloween1 Tommy was also real interesting because of that dark streak he had inside of him, the rough streak that would emerge every now and then even before Duke got him. He's an interesting and complex character, most people just don't really give him the time though.
when i was young this movie was cool, nuclear man was the best superman's enemy, the movie sadly was cut of 40 minutes, maybe this is why superman 4 was a flop
Mark Pillow was so hot when he played Nuclear Man which is why i love this movie. And i actually designed and created my own character of his son Nuclear Boy who is 13 years old with the same resemblance of his father but younger version like Superman and Superboy. And he fights against his father like Luke Skywalker and Darth Vador because he is more of hero almost but nuteral at the same time because he has part of his mother in him thats what makes him a good guy. And his mother which i decide is Kara Kent aka Supergirl, Cousin of Superman so yes Nuclear Boy is actually Superman's nephew and Superboy's cousin which they don't get along either. So yes Nuclear Man falls in love with Superman's cousin as they did had a relationship until Kara breaks it off because she realized his dark side later found out she was pregnant too of his son. Nuclear Boy's civilian identity name is Alexander Kent. But his father mostly calls him Alex so he can get really pissed when someone calls him Alex because his father calls him that which he prefers Alexander.
This movie, uhh, nuked Mark Pillow's acting career, but to be honest, I don't care. He was great in the role. Took it seriously. He seems like a good sport about it. Besides, his character is about to be imortalized in a new comic.
@sethmanrockandroll Yea. I also like how GW Duke was SO bad. But he was also SO hilarious. V got away from the underdog theme and took an interesting turn. (It dealt with deception. Something mentioned in 1, but never really explored.) I also liked how V showed that people loved Rocky even outside of the ring. And I liked how we were upset by TG's seduction by GW Duke. In fact, I can't help but feel "Rocky" V influenced "Star Wars" 'Revenge of the Sith.'
@sethmanrockandroll I think a lot of people didn't like "Rocky" V because they weren't ready to see the tragic fall of a hero. (Namely Tommy Gunn.) Going back to Part 1, even Rocky had some outbursts and issues. I see Tommy as a nice guy who had some faults. And he became corrupted through temptations that were hard to resist. How many people could give $20,000. and a nice new car back? Also Rocky was offered a chance at the title. It didn't seem to come for Tommy without GW Duke.
I'm so glad Sydney J. Ferie decided a different approach with Mark instead of the original Nuclear Man prototype screentest. The original looked like the elvish imp villain Mr. Mxyzptlk, horrible.
@TheGreenVoter ''The less said about Superman 4, the better'' Christopher Reeve Oh, it was also a box office flop, and not surprisingly prior to the film's release Reeve thought that the film was going to be ''terrible'' his fears ultimately came to fruition. You like it? great, but don't tell other's what they should like.
It wasn't my intention to offend (besides, food for thought: compare "colour" to sour and pour). I just meant that they're errors in the eyes of most Americans.
@eternalhalloween1 The problem with these hollywood guys is that they just don't know how to wing it. If you listen to a lot of the filmmakers working on these superman movies, you'll hear them go on and worrying about Marlon Brando footage and different directors, yatta yatta. THIS movie doesn't have any Brando in it, it has NUCLEAR MAN (or I use to call him Sun Man) and its my favorite! And then the Second one is right behind it, Kneel Before Zod!
@eternalhalloween1 It actually had a better underdog theme than Rocky III, as far as I see things. In Rocky III he has to try and get back to the streets and relearn the Eye Of the Tiger, but he still had his wealth to fall back on regardless of what happened. In Rocky V he actually was broke. I just didn't feel like there was much on the line between him and Clubber Lang either. I liked all the other ones better, Rocky III was mostly good for the footage clips, but thats me.
Mark could actually pass for He-Man. He played the villain in Superman IV, but he would be the hero if they didn't cast Dolph Lundgren as Prince Adam in the 1987 film "Masters of the Universe."
Yeah he would have made a great HE MAN. Masters Of Universe I remember seeing that when I was 10 HE MAN was my favorite and She Ra I used to watch those cartoons back in the 80s I haven't seen much of Mark Pillow he was in Superman 4 but what happened! Nuclear Man had powers but if he didn't have the sun he is useless. I saw Superman 4 when it came out and people didn't even like it. Dolph Lundgren played He Man. I miss the 80s and 90s so much and now everything sucks now. Everything went to pot and now movies have CGI I miss the movies that had magic.
My brother drew a picture of this guy as Nuclearman on my page go check it out and let's give the guy credit nuclear man can infact beat most of the DC and marvel characters who ever isn't smart enough to figure out his weakness will be beaten by him including Juggernaut and Doomsday sorry true facts
@sethmanrockandroll III was alright. I just feel Mr. T was too obnoxious. In 2, Apollo did some not so nice things, but we could see he had understandable frustrations. (The hate mail, a letter suggesting he kill himself, etc.) I did like how Apollo helped Rocky in 3. The character of Lang was just too exaggerated for me, and he had no redeeming qualities. Tommy was a decent guy, and I liked how we could feel sad as he fell under GW Duke's seduction.
I bet Mark felt really embarrassed having to voice-over Gene Hackman, instead of just improvising his own voice just regularly sinister. That like the how bad Christian Bale voice Batman in The Dark Knight Trilogy as if he had throat cancer.
Mark Pillow was screaming HOT...that, aside from Alexander Courage's nicely adapted score....is the ONLY thing to be said in favor of "Superman IV". I can only hope the original cast were paid shitloads. HOW did a director of Sidney J. Furie's talent make a film this bad???
Nemesis7293 Blame Cannon Films, who had no business attempting this type of movie. They should have stuck to cheap action films with Chuck Norris and Charles Bronson instead of this and Masters of the Universe, both of which contributed to the demise of Cannon.
@sethmanrockandroll I didn't much like 1. (Too slow) I thought 2 was a lot better. I liked how Superman had to fight 3 beings with his powers. And also that Lex had the courage to deal with them. And of course the look at Superman's character. 3 was my favorite. Richard Pryor was HILARIOUS. And also there were some dark serious moments like where Superman had to fight himself. I feel SM 4 (like "ROCKY" V) was unfairly maligned. 4 was what 1 should have been.
WTF happened to old school improve and acting, that teach this empathic techniques of acting and performance today at the Julian Academy for Dramatic Arts in New York? Today they act like shit. How did it get so below the substandard substance of mediocrity?
