That "one scene" in this show got Superman in a way so few ever could. Tyler's sweet smile and complete lack of irony, shame or anything other then honest to goodness... well... GOODNESS when he replies "Thanks, My Mom made it!" and flies off. Perfection.

Tyler nailed both the character aspects of Superman and Clark Kent. These versions of Superman and Lois have become my favorite live action incarnations of the characters.

It’s a terrific show - they were able to give us a traditional Superman because at the same time they were doing something different - showing us a Superman with a family - a Superman we’ve never seen before on screen - balancing his responsibility as a superhero with his responsibilities to his wife and boys It’s very well done with a lot of heart!

It's so fascinating how the TV show understands the whole reason why the "Injustice" plot that Zack Snyder tried so hard to put on the silver screen works: the evil Superman gone bad means nothing without the contrast of Superman at his finest. Touch an ice cube when you've been out in a blizzard, it doesn't feel different. Touch an ice cube when you've been in warm sunlight, and it stings a little. We feel the difference and we can comment on it, describe it. The canon Superman in the Snyder films is too much like the Injustice Superman gone evil to really make audiences invest in the fear of a hero fallen from grace. We have no warmth to contrast the coldness of evil Supes. In the original Injustice video game, we do have that moment though - that ray of light at the end where Superman challenges his evil counterpart, proves that he's wrong, and shows what being Superman actually means. Without that, there's only darkness and misery. The Snyder films didn't have enough light to show that contrast. Superman and Lois does. That's why that plot works.

I think the thing people forget about Superman is that he was a baby when he came to earth. He basically was human his entire life

this vid actually made me start crying, no joke. I've missed to badly seeing heroes that can be comforting to us, that love us and care about us and WANT to protect us. As a depressed bitch living out an uncertain young adult life I'm so tired of jaded cynicism in superhero movies, i just wanna go back to something fun and escapist to give me warmth and comfort when the real world seems so hopeless

To quote lois from the show when talking about Clark: 'hes the greatest hero this universe has ever seen, but he's an even better man', that is exactly how you present a character like superman, and this shows done a fantastic job at it. great to see him being portrayed correctly in media again

I love Henry as Superman but Tyler's version is just written and acted so well. It's the modern Superman I've always wanted, he has kids, a wife and real world problems to deal with. It's sad Supergirl wasn't good cause man it had so great potential hopefully Supergirl in the DCEU will be lovable and written well.

I wouldn't necessarily say that we don't need a deconstructed Superman... but rather, that all those deconstructions of the Superhero genre feel like they forgot the next step: reconstruction. Superman & Lois (and similarly, last year's Superman: Man of Tomorrow animated movie) feel like refutations of the deconstructed takes, going back to the source and delving deep into what defines these characters and why they aren't grim and angsty. This quote from Kurt Busiek sums the idea up nicely: "It strikes me that the only reason to take apart a pocket watch, or a car engine, aside from the simple delight of disassembly, is to find out how it works. To understand it, so you can put it back together again better than before, or build a new one that goes beyond what the old one could do. We've been taking apart the superhero for... years... it's time to put it back together and wind it up, time to take it out on the road and floor it, see what it'll do."

Perfect that this came out a day or so after Donner’s Passing.

Does anyone else just have a massive smile every time this show shows Superman? Especially in the flashback episode/scenes, I can’t stop smiling while he’s on screen.

I'm here after seeing the season finale with tears in my eyes to tell you that: YES, this is it. This IS the perfect modern adaptation of Superman, they nailed it in every single aspect, Tyler Hoechlin and Bitsie Tulloch made me believe, not only that a man can fly but a man can love. Hands down to say that i never liked Henry Cavill as Superman, he has the body (debatable), but the script Snyder made for his role as Superman is everything he's not in essence. And it's weird that in times like these, where we see Evil Supermen everywhere (almost every streaming service has his own) CW decided to come and wIpe people expectations of what a modern Superman is, they took everything what Smallville did good and polished it to modern audiences. Incredible, it really shows that CW shows have heart, but sadly it's the budget sometimes what make them totter.

just aggravatingly perfect

That's what I love about Tyler's Superman. He goes back to what he's supposed to be: not just a hero, but a friend. Not someone who people worship, but someone who people trust and are inspired by. Badass, but also wholesome. Superman is once again the symbol of hope.

This version, Christopher Reeves, and the animated series Superman are my all time favorite iterations of the character.

My favorite episode so far is when Lois shares her grief with Jon about her misarrange. And the scene where Lois blows her top at Jon and Clark is pretty much speechless was incredible and really shows how well everyone works on this show. Here we have the strongest person on the planet look at his wife with the biggest "I ain't messing with her right now" look and it is so good and Bitsie's acting in this ep cements her as one of the best version of Lois on screen period.

RIGHT??? Like there’s nothing wrong with making a hero a nice relatable dude, that doesn’t mean it’ll be boring which this show proves putting the core theme of Superman in this era still would work, whenever this Superman shows up we feel a sense of comfort cuz he’s literally the symbol of hope

I knew as soon as I saw Tyler on Supergirl that he could be this generation's Superman. I love Henry, he has the look down, but the writing in the movies always failed him. Yes, seeing a Clark who struggles with where he fits in the world is of course interesting, but not when it's done by writers who clearly don't know HOW to write it. You never spend enough time with Henry's Clark to really love him in the role, or to truly get behind his feelings. With JL (both versions) he has such a 180 turn in his portrayal that tries to feel like the Superman we all love at the end, but it's the same issue of not getting enough time with him at that point in his life. With Tyler, it's different. You get to see the man behind the suit in ways we haven't on screen in years. Granted, it's a tv show, but with the right writers, whether it's a tv show or movie, it shouldn't matter. If you get the character, than you simply get him. Great video as always, dude.

I’ve been watching this show with my dad. Whenever Clark has a nice moment with one of his kids he gets emotional. That’s the sign of a great show.

I love to hear others talk about how Superman’s greatest strength is his unabashed, wholesome, down home country-boy kindness and the depth of his love for humanity as a whole and as individuals. Superman is the farthest thing from dark and complicated and I wish we’d stop trying to make him that way 😒

Part of Superman’s appeal, for me, is also that he follows the classic sci-fi trope: the one guy/thing that isn’t human is actually the most human, and loves humanity the most. I love a kind, caring Superman just being the most human he can be (most, not best).

Controversial opinion: I like both Henry Cavil and Tyler Hoechlin’s Supermen

They even nailed the character of Jonathan in the show really well. Like that is Jonathan. Has every bit of his dad's heart. Even when he was talking with John aka Steel he hit him with that classic line "There's always another way". Won't lie Jordan got on my nerves abit, but I did enjoy the relationship between them.

My favorite part is that all these characters are able to say sorry and admit when they’re wrong. They act out of emotion and then we get a scene where they apologize and explain why they felt that way. It feels so real

This take is PERFECT. I wish The CW would allow the DC shows to focus on shorter, tighter seasons with better stories and more heart. “Superman and Lois” has managed to give us pitch perfect takes on the titular two, as well as an emotionally investing plotline with John Henry Irons, their take on the “evil Superman” trope, AND a realistic family dynamic featuring a super powered child. Like, that is so commendable to me, and I recommend this show to anyone I know who likes these adaptations.

The thing that let me know this would be a pretty alright show was a little ad on instagram of all things. Superman saved someone and they did the classic AC cover with the green buggy and I instantly thought oh great fanservice for fanservice sake but afterwards a kid complimented Superman's suit and he just said "thanks, my mom made it for me" it was simple, showed how humble he is, and also showed how much he loves humanity as a whole because he is part of it. He has the time for a random kid talking about his suit and used that moment to praise someone else. It's just Superman.

What sold me on this show was the scene with the kid Kid: cool costume Superman: thanks my mum made for me. And his smile is just so fucking wholesome.

This show is my favorite right now. The humanization of superman is awesome!! This is the Superman I have been waiting for!!

The discussion about how Superman, if nothing else, is just a man doing his best by choosing love is something that resonated deeply with me. Years ago, I saw the Kaptain Kristain video about the Fleischer Superman cartoons and how Superman, without his powers, is just a man from Kansas doing his best and it changed my life. There is no fictional character I look up to more than Superman. Great video!!

I honestly was not a big Superman fan growing up. But I have grown to really love him and the relation between Clark and Lois in this show - it is so simple, and very novel. I am excited for this show as it goes on.

I think what’s most special about him is that he’s basically a god among men but he still chooses to be a kind person. The thing that separates him from other heroes is his warmth and how he is a genuine friend to everyone.

Tyler is my Superman now. Henry Cavil is great and Christopher Reeve is a classic but the writing is so perfect and his Clark Kent is perfect

One thing (among many others) I noticed this show does which I really appreciate, in addition to the Superman and Clark Kent personas, you also get some subtle personality & movement differences in Clark Kent depending upon who he's around. You can see it when Clark is at home with just Lois and the boys versus when he's Clark and interacting with anyone who doesn't know he's superman. Kudos to Tyler because he transitions between the variations very seamlessly. Many things like this that the show does makes me as a viewer feel that the people working on it really care about what they are producing and have thought about the feeling and the message they want the viewer to take from the show.

It's good to know Superman is being properly portrayed

This is only show I have bothered to watch weekly in years. I genuinely cannot wait for each new episode. Superman is my favorite, and most important fictional character to me and this show is EVERYTHING I want from Superman. He's the overly optimistic, often cheesy goody two shoes attitude that Superman should have and the seriousness that he also needs. I can't believe this show is on the CW. Tyler Hoechlin is my second favorite Superman by Reeves and it's a very close call honestly

Super man in this show the type of guy who will help his kids prank a kid like a normal human. Like I love it because there is nuance and humanity.

This beautiful essay on the series brought a tear in my eye, as a Superman fan who always loves to see him fly no matter in what media, I absolutely adore Tyler's portrayal of the character, he is in my opinion the best live action Superman we have to date, Bitsie as Lois is awesome yet caring and loving as Lois should be and is. And while my favorite versions of the characters will always be Erica and Tom, I have to say that this show is really close to my heart.

Hopefully this gets more love because at this point, this is the probably the best show the CW has ever produced. Anyway, great video

Wasn’t expecting to cry today, but here we are.

Your narration is poetry in itself! This was top-notch content. Apart from the fact that I am an ardent admirer of Tyler Hoechlin, I wanted to watch this show, in particular, because there is a quality in Tyler Hoechlin that brings an unbelievable amount of empathy into play. In the series Teen Wolf, he played an extremely difficult role with such nuanced elan that even though he was being (somewhat unfairly) portrayed as an antithesis to the main hero, he went on to become one of the most memorable characters. That was why I was so excited when he was roped in to play 'Superman' in the Supergirl series and even as a cameo, I adored his old-school take on Superman. I really hope more people watch this show and kids of this generation learn to love superman the way we did when we were young.

When I first saw this video's title and thumbnail, my heart froze. Finally, FINALLY HiTop Films makes a video on something that I genuinely, TRULY LOVE with every single cell in my body. But I knew I couldn't just click on it like any other RU-vid video. Because it ISN'T any other RU-vid video. It's not an academic study, a rant, a random opinion. It's a love letter. To a show that we need now more than ever. So, I decided to wait. To wait until the day Superman & Lois closed it's chapter on it's First Season. Today was that day. This show is EVERYTHING Superman should be. While Tyler isn’t as jacked as Cavill (still in phenomenal shape tho), he captures the essence and heart of Clark Kent. And Bitsie’s performance as Lois is absolutely fantastic. The characters feel real, Smallville feels real, the set design is great, etc,. I pray this show stays the way it is with limited episodes and continued funding by HBOMax. Arrow’s first two seasons, season 5, and The Flash’s first two seasons were really good, this show manages to go above and beyond and so unlike the current and typical CW crap.

This show lives up to Donners idea of verisimilitude, Completely being true to itself. Episode to episode feels like the continuing adventures of a guy who’s been looking out for me since I bought my first comic book (Superman #75) back in 93 when I was six. Fantastic video essay 👏🏻

What I think a lot of movies got wrong was they were attempting to cast 'the' Superman when they should've been casting Clark, the studios treated Clark as an after thought. Superman is what other people called him Clark is the Superman but Superman isn't Clark also this iteration of Lois is the best live action one I've seen and she doesn't feel like an afterthought she's a fully fleshed character. Studios can use other hero's for angst or moping, and that may work, but it doesn't work with Superman what makes him work is his love of life and his family (including his friends).

I love coming back to this video. It's so poetic, and well worded. The whole segment describing what love really is almost brings a tear to my eye.

I keep trying to explain to my friends that superman isn’t ‘boring’ and that he isn’t technically ‘all powerful’ because his greatest weakness has always been that he cares so much about everyone. He really is just a normal guy trying his best and that’s why I’ve always loved the character. Hopefully if I send this video to them they’ll come closer to understanding. Love your videos!

The scene where Clark takes Jordan to the Fortress to burn the kryptonite out of his system was heartbreaking. And then crying and hugging him after the fact reminded me alot of the justice league unlimited episode where Clark was in a mind trance and had his own son and had to say goodbye to him. Very powerful stuff

Last Month I bought and read the best Superman story of all time: All Star Superman, and in that graphic novel, I saw my childhood hero becoming the representation of good, kindness, and wholesomeness. Hollywood needs to open their eyes. DC really needs to open their eyes, especially now. It's the perfect opportunity to demonstrate how we can all become Superman. The thing I like the most is that this Superman is just a chill dude who chooses to help people. Other takes can be fun to see and I like that what if aspect being explored but I think at his core, that's what Superman always has been and should be: Someone just like you or me, aside from the fact that he's super, that helps people because he loves everyone. Glad ur shining light on this underrated superhero show

“Just a matter of time, I suppose”, I thought (in the voice of Watchmen’s Comedian) when I found this on here. 6:57, this is what I appreciate most about the show. At the risk of sounding cliche, it truly feels like a “loveletter” to all previous Superman content, using the best elements of all of them (even elements from iterations some disagree with, like Snyder’s Superman), to weave this new tale. Even down to Dan Homer’s at times simple but still glorious score (and the way it kind of blends of John Ottman’s Superman Returns with Hans Zimmer and Tom Holkenborg’s Man of Steel/Dawn of Justice/Snyder Cut) the show feels distinctly Superman. What I found most fascinating is just how much this show got me personally and so many others to care….to actually….care about it and pretty much every character in it, even ones I thought I was going to hate or grow tired of. Hell, by the most recent episode, I had gone from seeing Kyle as just some pesky obstacle to be taken down by Lois and Clark in the future to the well meaning but struggling man trying to do right by his community and his family, playing a song on a guitar with his daughter. I went from seeing Jordan as this typical troubled and angsty “quiet kid” walking the line of a Chronicle/Brightburn type character ready for an inciting incident to drive him over the edge, to a genuinely good person with a dealt a bad hand, but who loves his family and knows that his family loves him back. And I most of all didn’t expect to even begin to care about John Irons and Morgan Edge. Not just angry, hateful, and spiteful villains with no capacity for anything more underneath. But deeply hurt people the show manages to portray convincing as hurting people that people can feel empathy towards while still not agreeing with them (though, admittedly, not always). I especially liked how John was first introduced as a “Luthor”, a name synonymous with singlemindedly hating Superman and him throwing away the name is what starts his path to being more of a real hero than some vengeful man haunted by his tragedies. As to the other big theme of the show, I don’t simply think it’s why Clark does what he does. Or just about the importance of knowing and understanding love and hope. But also about pain, hardship, and stress and everyone’s relationship with it. It’s something every character is faced with and how they respond to it helps define to us who each of them are as people. Wether it’s Clark and Lois struggling raising their kids as well as balancing their respective careers, or Jon and Jordan just being kids trying to navigate life as it changes around them, or Sarah’s frustration with her parent’s flaws the expectations put on her by others, or Lana’s strained relationship with her husband and daughter, or Kyle fearing losing his job and his relationship’s due to forces beyond his control, or Sam deciding wether to be a soldier willing to do anything to protect humanity or a family man that stands with his family, or John failing to protect his world and fearing being unable to protect this new one, to Edge being raised by a cruel father after losing his world while secretly being desperate to not be alone and unloved anymore. Everyone knows pain, but the true heroes are the ones who manage to not let it consume them and rise above it. It’s a simple theme, but it’s so well utilized and well woven into the narrative that it becomes truly impactful. All this to say that it’s incredible to feel as though the people who made this genuinely care about making a quality story from start and, hopefully, to finish.

It struck me that you can always tell a great concept when it's open to different versions and interpretations and that all of them in their own way, have great takes on the characters and mythology. This series' approach needed people who are "down-to-earth" and it found it in these two great actors. Their pauses and timing are on par with movie acting, as opposed to typical TV acting delivery (especially the usual WB fare) where the actors are clearly indicating their speaking lines written by others instead of thinking of it at that moment. And their chemistry is great - I can really believe these two would marry.

honestly, the first 10 minutes of the show, ticked ALL my boxes. This is it. The way superman is supposed to be written and portrayed. Superman is not a cold and arrogant emo boi- he is the embodiment of hope, goodness and love. And I LOVE Tyler as Superman AND Clark Kent. I think some people (cough) don't understand that Clark Kent is just as important to the story as Superman is, if not more. I loved everything about this show- so many times I got tears in my eyes and said "this is it!". The writing is beautiful, the family dynamics are interesting and respectfully handled- no drama for the sake of drama-, the acting is really good, Lois is amazing, the chemistry between characters is perfect, the cinematography and the cgi! It's so well made, seriously. I was reluctant to give it a shot because its the CW but thank god haha. Finally a show and a creative team that GETS Superman. Really happy with it!
