I’ve gotta say, I wish the dean cain Superman and this lex Luthor were in the crisis on infinite earths crossover. Maybe dean Cain will make an appearance as Superman considering he played supergirl’s adoptive father, so it wouldn’t be much of a hard sell to get him to put on the costume again.
@@skadooshly I definitely agree, but I'll admit that Rosenbaum is growing on me. If John Shea shaved his head for the role, he would have been perfect. Maybe wear a toupee during public appearances in the first season.
Some of the greatest scenes in the whole series. Many fans hated the “Clone Arc” because it delayed the wedding. Also that the two amnesia episodes dragged it out too long. But John Shea was fantastic in both Double Jeopardy and Seconds. The Phoenix was a great episode but that should have been a 2 parter after such a long build up of his return. Here we finally get Lex Luthor as full out Super Villain and Superman’s archenemy. Him learning Clark’s secret is payoff finally from the Foundling when he learned Superman was raised as a Human and walks amount us.
Yes, Lex was awesome in both his appearances after being exposed as a true villain at the end of the first season. These two episodes especially take the cake!
He didn't get many of these moments in the first season when he was the same criminal masquerading as a wealthy respected businessman. But once that charade passed, he was out for blood each time.
I completely agree. Because it's not about being bald - it's about the sparkle in the actors eyes. Look for the real terminator in 1984 and look in the cgi arnold in 20...äh, I guess 15. You can create very much but not that sparkel in these eyes.
it was a great show; first 3 seasons were great!!! the problem was that after they got married all that tension was gone they needed to create more tension and they didn´t so the show went down!!
Luis Felipe Silva Sampaio Yep. post crisis Superman = depowered and more human. John Burn reigned in the Man Of Steel's powers to make him more realistic. but I believe Superman's powers in the comics have grown again. I think he can move mountains and planets again.. Not sure about planets, but he really powerful again..
yep he is much more powerful now because after he returned from his death in 1992/1993 he got back even more powerful because of something that the eradicator did if i´m not mistaken!!!
@onizzy24 It depends. One of the great things about L&C for me is it's faithfulness to the Post Crisis era in the comics. Lex was a billionaire, Clark was the real guy etc. etc. Yes, Shea was a great Lex too. I totally agree. As for Rosenbaum on Smallville, he was good too but he was way too much of a "Spoiled brat" kind of Lex than the cold, calculating one of the comics which Shea's version is based off of.
For me it's a tie between John Shea and Michael Rosenbaum. Both of them elevated the character of Lex Luthor into a very nuanced and more human portrayal than anything that had come before, especially Gene Hackman's campy portrayal (even though there are elements of that version that I love, like some of the cheesy one liners, including "We all have our faults. Mine's in California.")
I was more a fan of Shea's Lex when he was cool and collected during the first season instead of the almost over acted version he did here. I know it was for story purposes, but it just came off as way too theatrical in many ways. I was glad though that Shea came back to give closure to the character.
***** me too. it's a natural progression of losing your mind. When you want something so bad and you continue to fail again and again. Then it becomes your obsession. This is exactly how I picture a superman /lex relationship. Lex is completely driven to the brink after countless failed attempts to destroy superman
@superstarwarsrocks yha it's awesome, i am going to go back to my public lib. and rent the show now because i haven't seen the show since i was a kid and i think it's about time to see this awesome show again. Thanks for sharing the video.
Michael's up there in my top three. For me, it's John Shea, Clancy Brown (Superman Animated Series/DCAU voice) and Michael Rosenbaum. Special mention to John Glover too. I know he was Lionel, but my god he was simply amazing as a Luthor.
@MissChloeWhinchester Because Lex knows that hurting people Clark cares for hurts him MUCH MORE than if he just killed him. That's Superman's biggest weakness and greatest strength - Kryptonite isn't his biggest weakness, his heart is. And if any enemy of Superman truly wanted to break the Man of Steel, they'd aim for his heart.
OH MAN... I sure wish i knew how that turned out. Just a couple more minutes please!... what a tease, at least show us how he escaped? I gotta buy the series.
@Theshark15z Geez, I don't know. Each actor brought a unique quality to the character. Rosenbaum showed us a tortured soul, Hackman showed us a charismatic individual, Spacy showed us an intellectual madman, and Shea showed us a level headed genius. However, each and everyone ofthem portrayed a man losing his cool quite well.
Wtf there are no weapons of earth design that can truly harm superman without kryptonite. Even comic lex with all his crazy science and genius couldn't do it. This makes zero sense.
Dude why are you arguing with me.......I was serious, if superman just strapped on a pair and snapped his neck the problem is solved. I wasn't having a go at man of steel, thought it was awesome, star trek was better tho
The actor (John Shea) said that, as Lex is one of the most brilliant and wealthiest people in the world, there's no good reason why he should be bald if he didn't want to be. It's a fair point, too. Apparently, way back when, Lex did have hair, but an artist's mistake made him look bald and they went with it.
@Theshark15z I'd have to go with Shea to be honest. Hackman was too campy, Spacey wasn't used to his full potential, Rosenbaum while a great actor had to play a spoiled brat version of Lex and Shea played the billionaire CEO who was a thorn in Superman's side just like the comics.... With hair. So definitely Shea.
The footage of the building blowing up is from Lethal Weapon 3, Lois and Clark is from Warner Brothers, so logically they would have access to the footage, plus there's no way a T.V show would have a big enough budget for a full building demolition.
@brawlman18 He is - But, in LOIS & CLARK he wasn't. The reasoning behind that was someone with a billion dollars at his disposal would learn how to cure his baldness.. But in the series, he DID go bald in Season 2 but his hair grew back in Season 3.
@LynxProd In the comics around the time this aired, Lex had full head of hair. He actually had a mullet and a goatee like beard. Of course the L&C version never had a beard but he did have hair.
you know, and i'm sorry if you disagree with this, but only a coward attacks a superheros family. He could have just dragged clark off and killed him, or just killed him there, but no, he had to threaten clark's family. That is twisted and wrong.
I love Smallville, but then I love any and all things Superman. Smallville had better effects, Clark had a lot more issues and struggles. It was interesting watching him grow into his powers as well as becoming a man. I think story lines were better. It took a lot more to put Tom Welling Superman down for the count. Lex on Smallville was bad ass. Let's face it, Michael R. played the hell out of that role. Smallville also had the only Lois Lane that didn't get on my nerves. TBC.
