Special thanks to Carson and Andrew for the Huge help while filming!
This video isn't perfect, but I had worked on it for so long that I almost considered scrapping the whole thing, but I'm finally happy that it's finally out! If you want to know my self critique on the video as a whole, the rest of the description is just going to be that. Thanks for watching!
Self Critique
There are a lot of things that I don't particularly like about this video, and I think most of that can be attributed to how ambitious I was originally. I wanted to have so many different moving parts through out the entire video, and it got more and more complicated as I went on. Certain shots I had planned were even cut out just because I couldn't manage to pull it off while filming. I only had a maximum of six hands, and it was very difficult to get everyone around the set without disrupting the lighting, and that's evident in some of the shots. A few shots looks really bad, and that's just because I messed up at certain points while shooting, and so I just had to salvage what I could. I also didn't consider how Focus would come into play when putting the characters on different planes. This made some shots look weird as I tried to split focus, or I just had certain characters out of focus entirely. Although this did give me the opportunity to have some shots include changing focus during, and I think those look really cool. Aside from the lighting, and the lackluster puppet movements due to not enough hands, I think the worst part is the backgrounds. I am very unexperienced in background art, and so with this video, I didn't even bother trying. That makes the entire set look quite bland as a whole. Even with the interesting hanging platform, the drab colors of the walls and floors make it look very uninteresting.
I was happy with a couple things though. I think my character designs have been getting a lot better. I am trying to improve my drawing and digital conversion of those drawings, and I think I did well with this video. There were a ton of expressions, I didn't count, but I think I had easily over 100 puppets. The set itself was very makeshift, but super cool to see in person. I used every random household object I could find to make the extremely complex set, and I was even able to set up this really cool dual light source contraption for it all. Maybe I'll make a short behind the scenes video, because the building of the set and the filming around the set was some of my favorite parts. I also tried some traditional animation for once! The intro may be short, and it is just a still image, but I think it turned out really well, and I am excited to try more complex animations next time.
So far my next video I want to improve Lighting, puppet stability, backgrounds, camera work, and I didn't mention this in the critique, but I also want to improve my thumbnails. I'm not quite sure how to make them more interesting, so that's something for me to work on.
If you made it this far, let me know what you think of the video, and any advice you have about my self critiques or your own critiques would be awesome! Thanks for watching!
