Davion, you are right. even the shapeshifter said it. Dean had dreams too, Dean also wanted to go to college, or do something that wasnt hunting, but he always felt the responsability to take care of his brother, of the innocent people they helped and help his father. He had to give up everything he could have ever wanted because he had to be a good son/hunter/soldier ps, he also clearly knew about monsters earlier than sam did since he was like 5 years older, and he had to carry that secret and protect his brother. maybe some people sitting ther ask too much of a 10 year old mmmm???? hahah

Thank you for standing up for Dean, Davion. He had a messed up childhood. I'm with you about how Dean missed out on his childhood and having to act as a surrogate parent for Sam. Then his brother Sam leaves them to go to college - which to Dean would absolutely feel like abandonment. It isn't fair to Sam that he wanted to go to college and it turned into being out of the family, but Dean definitely was screwed by constantly being in the middle. Literally in this episode.

I'm sorry y'all but I gotta agree with Davion here. Think about it, Dean lost a normal life at the age of 4 when his mother passed away and got dragged into a hunter life by his father. Imagine the kind of burden that must carry on someone at such a young age (and yes, ik Sam was 6 months old at the time, but he was a baby, obviously he's gonna freak out and cry, and he barely even knew his mom.. It just seems like a bigger scare when your mother, which you've known for 4 years, dies of an unnatural cause like that, it's traumatic), not to mention the fact that he had to go his whole life following his father's decisions, without even getting to make his own, up until this episode. He also had to carry another burden, which is the burden of protecting his younger brother for LIFE, by the orders of his father.. Sam, on the other hand, never got to live a normal life, as well, but tbh, it's not like he had a choice, he was a baby. His girlfriend died, and he had to resort to hunting with his brother, again, while finding their father, so they could continue their quest as a family to kill the son of a bitch demon that ruined their normal life. Then there's John, who pretty much lost his wife, then had to make sure the boys were always safe by teaching them the hunter ways. So think about it, who really lost the most here, and who has been protecting the other(s) the best so far? In my opinion, it's still Dean, then Sam, then John. Period.

Sam didn’t even know his Mother, Dean actually lost someone he knew and could remember. Also, John did the best he could in the circumstances he found himself. Not saying that Davion is right or wrong, or that he was a responsible father, but he loved Mary and he loved his sons. Well done guys, always enjoy your reactions. Take care.

What’s wild about this is that jensen (dean) and jeffery (john winchester) are only 12yrs apart in age. 12yrs still sounds like alot. But when one is playing their father it’s interesting to see jeffery easily could’ve just been an uncle or an older brother to sam and dean.

Yes, John 'wasted' a bullet, which does show he cares about his sons (even if he IS a terrible father). But I think shooting the Colt was also about proving that it could actually kill anything. Up until now they only thought it was a legend. Shooting the vamp proved that it really works.

I agree with Davion. As someone who has watched the whole show , I feel the same about how Dean has has more hardships in his life. And yet he’s still there for his baby bro. He acted as a father figure when John was out hunting weeks on end too. And he actually knew their mom but Sam was just a little 1 year old baby at the time.

dean and sam both lost a lot, neither did have normal childhood nor life. but the bottom line is, davion is right. i have so much to say here, but it would include some spoilers. long story short, dean had dreams, he wanted a normal life, he wanted this and that but he gave this all up for his younger brother and to take care of him. while sam went to college, which i don't blame him for, dean never had the opportunity to go because he was basically taking care of sam and he was more of his parent than a brother. talking about john, john put so much stuff on dean's head since dean was 4, it will be adressed very soon but it is true. sam had someone to look over him, dean. dean had no one.

At least Sam got to live his life for a few years which Dean never got....And Dean lost his childhood pulling up the broken pieces his family left behind ...yes Sam lost jess but Dean couldn't even afford to have his own jess to lose....that's how much he has been sacrificing his whole life to keep all the sh.. together. Look I love em both...and not trying to undermine anyone's losses or sumthing...but Dean has been losing things even before he would even get them because his life would not allow it and he never complained...he never tried for once to have things for himself and get out of the situation....he embraced it in such a way that the whole thing became a part of him...and people tend to forget how different he could look without all those baggage he so bravely carried....often with a smile.

Fun fact: Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who plays John Winchester was also playing a character on Grey's Anatomy at the time. That's why all of his scenes are filmed at night. Also, JDM also had Jensen and Jared put post it notes on their foreheads to read his lines cause he could not remember them along with his Grey's Anatomy lines. That's also why John Winchester is not in more episodes

Dean was responsible of taking care of Sam even though he was young himself. He had to grow up early. Also he probably felt abandoned when Sam left for collage. John was never around Sam was all he had.🤷‍♀️

As for losing their mother, Sam was just a baby so he wouldn't even have much memory of her, whereas Dean had at least four years of his life to be attached to her. Not to mention having to take the full force of John's anger after Sam left for uni. Even in this episode we see Dean acting as a parent would when John and Sam are fighting. Dean had to give up any dreams of his own in order to properly raise Sam, cause Lord knows John wasn't going to smh

ah, the eternal fandom disccusion of "Who had it worst". I just say, why do people discuss about who suffered most? Is something to be proud of if your character suffered the most? Like seiousley. I HATE that discussion, is like just because one brothere had it worst it desistimates the pain of the other. The way that discussions works is like saying you can't feel sad for something because someone else had it worst than you... And the worst part? It happens mostly with the Dean!Girls/Boys (and belive me I've seen it A LOT)... You can see it even in this coment section "yEs, DeaN hAd iT WoRst ThaN sAm". It doesn't matter "who had it worst" the point is tha both went through a lot of shit that afected them differently, both suffered, don't say things like "Dean/Sam had it worst" because as I said, it seriousley feels like by saying that you invalidates the other brother's pain...

I think Sam and Dean have gone through tons of shit almost equally and both of them didn't deserve even 0.1% of it. John cares for his kids but he is a horrible father. You all have to remember Sam wasn't hunting out of the crib. We already had a few episodes that showed they were protecting Sam from that crap for a number of years there well before Sam got involved. Also Dean was giving a LOT of responsibility right from the start according to what we have already seen. Side bar on parenting, it isn't easy and no parent is perfect. Add that to having to fight supernatural forces then poppa Winchester had extra worries on his plate along with raising his boys safely as possible in a world like that.

Nah I'm with Davion on this one. Up until this point, the one who had suffered more is Dean. He lost his mom when he was 4yo. Unlike Sam, he didn't grew up without knowing how it was to have a mom, he grew up knowing what it was to have one to have her taken away from him all of a sudden. So yes, both lost their mom, but their age and the memories they hold from this are very different. Dean was so traumatized by all these events (not just losing his mom but the way he did it with the fire and having to carry his brother outside leaving his dad inside with all the flames not knowing what was really happening) that he couldn't even speak for a really long time, not even to say a single word (as he said in the Lake episode). While Sam was still a baby who didn't know what was happening so he probably just cried more after Mary's death because he missed his mom, but it wasn't something that really marked him as he has no memories of her. At all. Dean was robbed from a childhood. Sam too because they both grew up as hunters and not as normal kids but the difference is the same that with their mom: Dean has memories of how his life was with his family, what it was to be happy and carefree being raised by a loving and funny dad and a sweet and caring mom. Sam doesn't. Which made the transition from the normal life to the hunter life more difficult to Dean, because he knew what he was losing. Sam didn't. The first memories Sam has are already about being raised as a hunter and having an absent father and a caring brother that tried to do anything he could to make Sam have a normal childhood, like the one he himself once had. But in order for Dean to make Sam's childhood easier and more normal, he had to grew up faster and stop being a kid. Now yes, Sam had it bad too because he never liked the fact that they were always moving, staying in motels, changing schools, not sharing normal activities with his dad as going to a soccer game together or watch movies on sundays while eating ice creams. And because he instead was trained on how to fight, shoot and use a knife, but he never knew what it was to have a normal happy family, the only normal he knew was thanks to Dean so he never suffered from this perfect life being taken away from him, unlike Dean. As they grew up, Sam became more rebellious while Dean stayed as the loyal son who took dad's words as law without questions asked. So when the time came and Sam got to be old enough, he left in order to chase that normalcy he always wanted. John was mad with him for it because, as he said in this episode, he was too afraid to think Sam would be all alone without him or Dean being there to protect him. And Dean didn't take it good either because of the same reason and because he values family as nothing else, so to be separated from Sam after so many years together 24/7 was really hard, yet he respected Sam's decision and didn't bother him for 2 whole years. Sam left to college when he was 18 and he was there for 4 years. In these years, he never talked with John again, even tho he still maintained communication with Dean for the first 2 years. In all this time, he was happy: he found what he always craved for, a normal life, a place to study, estability, friends and a nice and beautiful girl that stole his heart. And even when he missed his family, he was good with what he had. Dean, on the other hand, was very lonely these years. As he got more mature and older, John decided they could start hunting separatedly, so Dean had to travel all alone around the country looking for cases to save people. He wasn't miserable because he liked his job, but as we know he is a family man, we can just infer that he really missed hunting and being with John and Sam. So no, these years were not really good for him. After all this time, Sam got into hunting once again in order to help his brother and find his dad, and that's when he loses Jess. Her death destroyed him as he felt responsible for it for the dreams he had about it but that he never cared to tell her about because he prefered to convince himself they were just dreams and it wasn't worth it to tell her and worry her as it "obviously" didn't really mean anything. This helped Sam to finally really understand John and Dean's thirst of vengance for Mary's death. The love of his life was taken away from him all of a sudden and in a very unnatural way, now he wanted to know who did it coz now he finally shared the pain Dean felt for the lose of his mom. Because yes, losing a lover at the age of 22 vs. losing your mother at the age of 4 is completely different, yet the trauma is very similar. So in this context, they start hunting together and spending all their time with one another. Almost like they did before Sam left. This brought happiness to Dean, but not really to Sam. See, as they said in previous episodes, all that Dean did ever want was to have his family together again and go hunting with them, while Sam didn't. Coz he still wanted his normal life: he wanted to venge Jess's death so he could go back to school, find a job and probably have a whole apple pie life after that. And that was because Sam never liked hunting, unlike Dean. He believed he could have something more than just killing monsters, unlike Dean who thought the job had to be done by him and only him so he couldn't get a happy normal life. Except now, they are both being miserable but for different reasons: Sam for not being able to kill the yellow eyes demon when he had the chance because Dean didn't let him; and Dean for thinking he's not enough for his family. He thinks he's going to be left alone and he's scared of that. Sam and John were all he had left and he realized that for them is more important to venge their dead beloved ones than fight to stay alive and together with him. To this, we have to add their fear of losing his dad. But all in all, Dean is having it harder right now. Coz yes, Sam is frustrated because killing the demon has become his priority no matter what and he lost his best chance to do it, but Dean is scared and hurt deep inside because he thinks that he's not important for the people he cares about the most in the world. He thinks that their love for their girls is stronger and bigger than their love for him and as it's not like that for him (because yes, he wants to venge his mom but his love for his dad and brother is way bigger than his thrist of vengance), it really is breaking him from the inside. So yes, I repeat, up until this point, the one who has had it worse is undoubtedly Dean, not Sam. Sam has sufferred a lot too, yes, but certainly not more than Dean has.

whats hurt most about John comparing himself to Sam is that, even tho Dean is the loyal son that took most of his father abuse and Sammy is the one that holds resentment, Sam is the one that slowly grows more like his dad, from the way he abandoned his normal life to go after the same demon that took the woman he loved to [spoiler], like, talk about repeating your parents mistakes isolating himself and leaving Dean in the blind :(

My brother is 14 years older than me and raised me because our parents weren’t around much, he sacrificed a lot for me. He is now happily married and a new Dad 😊 I always felt for Dean and related to the boys’ dynamic (although me and my brother aren’t as competitive over every day things haha). I don’t have a favourite but their bond is my favourite thing and is written so well and so realistically (which is amazing for a show about supernatural beings) lol 😊
