Supertramp is Roger Hodgson & Rick Davies. Both are singers, songwriters and keyboardplayers. So there are often two voices and always lots of keys. This album is their prog masterpiece and Breakfast in America is their commercial masterwork.
Awesome album, great song! IMHO this is the single greatest rock song ever about sanity and insanity, the duality and the limits imposed by society between them. A masterpiece.
"Supertramp is music to my ears" - La That is what we have been telling you gentleman. 😊 Supertramp's dynamics are S tier. BTW - 15 p is Pence or Pennies in England.
Great tune by Supertramp. The more that you hear them, the more that you realize how so far ahead of the curve they were in the Prog rock genre. I definitely heard the early Elton vibes with the piano and string and the buildup. Great reaction La and Che!
No doubt my favorite Supertramp Album & best recording too...Next are Crises what Crisis & Even in the Quietest Moments...saw them 3x in Concert...never disappointed.
You guys should start doing some of their live tunes off of the Paris album. From start to finish one of the great live albums of all time. Love your channel by the way.
La and Che thanks for reintroducing Super Tramp to me. Fabulous musicians. They went completely radar. Excellent reaction fellas! You are the best. Appreciate you 🙏 ❤
Great reaction, guys, as always!! My suggestion, for what it's worth - every single song off "Crime of the Century" followed by each track on "Crisis? What Crisis?", then "Even In the Quietest Moments" and finally "Breakfast in America". All excellent LP's and well worthy of you reactions! Peace,
15p is 15 pence - brilliant album - great review - you still have 'Hide in Your Shell' & 'If Everyone Was Listening' to finish off this album. - can't wait.
Consider hearing "Try Again", off of the first album. The album wasn't much to talk about. Not for me. "Try Again" wasn't played on the radio. But you hear this song and think, OK, this is the first time the great arrangement potential revealed itself. I think at that time they had a different woodwinds guy. This song has flute. As I recall, it's a long song... so I hope that's OK. It's not as incredible as some of these masterpieces that you have heard, but it's quite unique and I loved it the first time I heard it.
Love Supertramp, bought this album when I was 14 and saw them live on the tour. You should really be doing this whole album but "Rudy" is a must. Also check out "Even in the Quietest Moments" and "Fool's Overture" and more. Thanks guys, loving your channel!
THE best sounding album of all time, and this is the peak of it all, production wise. George Martin couldn’t have improved this, Phil Spector couldn’t have, Brian Wilson couldn’t have… it’s just PERFECT❤
I’ll suggest again, their magnum opus, Brother Where You Bound. The title cut off the first album after Roger Hodgson left the band. It is the longest song they ever released and has guest guitarist David Gilmour! Masterpiece!!
I don't know if there's a table big enough for all the bands that were around in the 70s 80s. At one point I had tickets for, Moody Blues,Neil Young ,Jethro Tull and The Dead, on the night stand in my bedroom.
15p is 15 pence (pennies), or £0.15 (pounds), or £3.00 a packet of 20, pretty sure it would have been about £1 a packet in those days. Even now its not £15 for a cig!
Great reaction! It's great to see you react to Supertramp and being as blown away as I was some forty years ago when I started listening to them. Supertramp is an amazing band, extremely talented and progressive rock at it's very best. Keep reacting..., try "Even in the quietest moments".., "Fools overture"..., "If everyone was listening"....,
As with these prog type bands, and for the era of these musicians, the entire album is meant to be listened in its entirety. This song is a welcome “breather” in the midst of some other more energetic compositions. It’s its own gem in that it ties in with the theme of the album. Such a pleasurable album to listen to!
When you are old enough to have lived through this music and come to days sound, it's easy to understand why todays music seems flat. Thanks for sharing gents, you content is enjoyed and appreciated.
I saw Supertramp in concert when I was 18 and this song hit particularly hard live. I didn’t expect it, but WHAM…I got rocked. Prior to that, I wouldn’t have called it filler but just not as gripping to me as a lot of their other songs. It changed that day.
I've never heard this song, but it illuminates a critical point. The best songs are the deeper cuts beyond the hits. Tramp was channeling some Beatles and Floyd here. Great stuff.
I just now realized, I think like the Live in Paris version of this song more. And I still maintain that Bob Siebenberg is one of the most underrated rock drummers of all time.
This is so exciting to see you guys react to this album. It's one of my favorite by them. And like a lot of really amazing pans, they've got multiple members that can effectively do lead vocals and everybody can do fantastic Harmony vocals. Can't wait to hear your reaction to bloody well right, unless you've already done it and I missed it. I'll probably go check the playlist.
I don’t believe in G.O.A.Ts when it comes to music but this album is one of the few that when you listen to it you know it couldn’t possibly be better, perfection the lyrics, the instruments, the mix… incredible, every time I revisit it I’m blown away again.
Yes Boys, Mamma here, they say an apple a day keeps the Dr away, Mamma says Supertramp keeps the Dr away. Ok You gotta hear this whole flippin album , you're ears will thank you for the blessing. Cheers
Asylum.... at the very end it got cut off as the volume fell.... the coo coo clock sound effect... it's all the little things Supertramp added that make their albums as close to perfection as it comes... what better way to end a tune that states... "don't let them take me to no asylum, I'm just the same as anyone, it's just a game I play for fun..... Coo Coo....
You guys really need to react to Hide In Your Shell, the song just prior to this one on the album. To me Hide In Your Shell is Supertramp's all-time greatest song.
Ken Scott on production. Partly recorded at Trident Studios using their proprietary console, one of the best sounding desks ever made. They made good use of the legendary Trident Bechstein piano, also featured on many Elton John, Queen, Carly Simon , Bowie, etc. tracks.
Love it when you guys get back to Supertramp! PLEASE do a review for Hide In Your Shell from this album. It is one of my favorite Supertramp songs and I think you'll really enjoy it. Have a good weekend gents!
I just LOVE how much y’all LOVE Supertramp. Grew up loving them with very few friends that also had an appreciation for them. I’m sure “Fools Overture”is on your “to do” list, but I really can’t wait to see what y’all think of it!
I'm really, really happy that you like this music. She has never left my side since the first time, in 1977. She always amazes me. There is always a detail, something that still manages to amaze me, even after hundreds and hundreds of listens.
Pretty much anything from Crime Of The Century and Even In The Quietest Moments will never disappoint. Breakfast In America was their huge breakthrough but, to me, those previous albums were Supertramp at their best. I find it interesting that you would hear an Elton John vibe to the opening section. In 1969, before auditioning for the band that would become Supertramp, Roger Hodgson released a single on the Island label under the band name Argosy. He wrote both sides and each sounds so much like his style. The backing studio musicians were Caleb Quaye, Nigel Olsson, and Reginald Dwight. Dwight would change his name in a few months to Elton John. So there is a connection between Supertramp and Elton John. That said, it's also that this style of piano playing is indicative of the sound for many UK keys musicians from this period.
Gentlemen I love your reactions to the music I grew up listening to, Super Tramp is one of the best I suggest listening to there next album called Crisis what Crisis. Another album with all great songs.
I hope you guys can realize and understand how much these guys had an impact on us teenagers back in days. Let's just say that all the music that came out in the 70's made me who l'am today and I won't have it any other way 👍🏻
I am really enjoying your reactions… thank you… Keep it going. Can you guys try another band.. please…. THE CULT - songs… RAIN or FIRE WOMAN or SHE SELLS SANCTUARY… you will not be disappointed.❤
Lol. Supertramp does not hold back!! I love the risks they take. That's where true creativity resides - in the courage to blast through the fear of judgement from the critics, from the public, from the fans and ultimately from oneself.
Another great Supertramp reaction guys! Keep the train moving please. Even in the Quietest Moments, the Logical Song and Goodbye Stranger that has the best outro guitar solo EVER
Actually, you are both correct. This song and Elton's song "Madman Across The Water" explore similar territory both lyrically and musically. And they were recorded within roughly a year of each other. So in that sense, they are bound to share at least one momentary vibe. But aside from that, they are each their own singular artistic vision. And both are remarkable achievements.
It’s easy to pick a song that is not to your liking. A friend from WSU came back with Night at The Oprah and Crime Of the Century. Wow. What a day of music. Enjoy!
I'd have thought you'd have something to say about the drums, specifically. Pretty rare in 1975 for drums to be mic'd and produced that way, I mean, THAT massive, considering that this isn't heavy metal or even hard rock. Some might say the whole track, or the whole album (or all of Supertramp's output) was over-produced, but little details always made the difference for me as a 14yr old fan back then, like the attack on the organ when it comes in at 01:47, or the triangle/tiny bells at 03:28.
All of my favorite reactions from you guys are always a Supertramp song ! Watching 2 guys / musicians at least 2 generations below me Appreciate and understand their sound and there uniqueness is Awesome ! These guys have always been and will always be my favorite band from my teenage years which is the 70s ! I can't wait til you start to dabble in there "Even in the Quietest of Moments" album ! Their catalogue is pretty damn deep ! ✌️
It gave me Elton John vibes in the beginning, too! Glad I wasn't the only one, lol. Of course Supertramp always bring it, they're consumate professionals & extremely talented.
15 p in the UK is a pence or English penny ¢. And your response to my favorite Supertramp song reminds me of mine 45 yrs ago thank you for the smile you put on my face tonight 🎶
One of eight masterpiece songs from Supertramp's masterpiece of masterpiece albums. The live version from " Paris " is very good, it is played at a slightly faster tempo
I'm happy for you gentleman having found this incredible band but sad for you as well knowing that you'll never see a live performance. I saw them numerous times in the 70s and 80s and can tell you they were absolutely fantastic in concert. I recommend Fools overture for your next supertramp song.
