This brings back a fond memory of recording the band live for what would become the Paris album. They were great performers, wrapping the audience around their fingers with both tension and humor. Fantastic experience.
Supertramp may as well have called themselves Wurlitzer as they gave without doubt the depth and versatility the instrument could offer the public. Absolutely superb performance my friend!
Played with irreverence and feel making syncopated polyrhythms sound like absolute child's play ive always thought this piece was like the "classical gas of piano" the way it meandors and builds you play it flawlessly sir kudos!
Okay, the definition of polyrhythm is 2 simultaneous different rhythms, that can create rhythmic harmony or tension. I would point all of the people saying "no Polyrhythm" to the end of the solo where i am playing block chords over an 8va rhythm in the left hand. Polyrhythm to the max right there. And in other places too, but this example is the most obvious...
Very well played and with the right sound/feel needed for one of the best keyboard intro/song created in rock music...such a masterpiece!!! Thank u for sharing. A guy from France:-)
This video is best when played at three-quarter speed. How do you do that? Left-click on the small cog shape at the bottom right of the picture, click on 'Playback speed', click on 0.75 and then play the video from the beginning.
Killer! Sounds great, very accurate. I didn't realize until recently that both of the main singers in ST played Wurli 200As. Quite a revelation to me. BTW, I feel your pain about being a player, relegated to the garage...Me too...
Dude, can you do a full cover of this? I've never seen someone actually recreate this intro. I also really dig the rhythm you put into it after the interlude.
I like your rendition, it's sassy and classy with just the right amount ummph. Okay got to ask you where did you find that awesome wurlitzer?. I sold one to a guy a bunch of years ago on ebay and always regretted it...LOL
Oh, great, now every time I see one I am forced to think of bbq grilles. That is as bad as when my son said Stevie Nicks sounds like a Billy goat. Now you can never here her sing the same again. “Shit, the kid was right, she sounds like a Billy goat.”.
Hi Mark!! Excellent cover and playing! Having a real Wurlitzer is my life's dream. I have a question, does your your wurly has a nice/comfortable action? For example to make fast runs like in this song. I have a Casio electric piano but its soo hard, it gives me a hard time making fast licks. Also you should try putting your wurly through a chorus pedal, it's instant Supertramp! Cheers!
The feel of this piano is very good, not perfect. It needs to be regulated, and the felts probably need replacing. Playing any kind of fast run should not be dependent on the keyboard. Any reasonably good action should be able to get satisfactory results. I think that finger/wrist/forearm technique is a more important playing factor. Adjusting your technique to different keyboard actions is essential for any working keyboard player, just because you will find yourself playing many different keyboards very often. This is one of the parts of playing keyboards that GTR players never have to worry about. Once you have a GTR you like, you can gig very often with that 1 instrument. With keyboards, you are often switching between different keyboard responses, due to the need of providing different sounds and textures. I use an Eventide Time Factor for chorus sounds, just not paired with this particular amp. The SuperTramp Wurly sound is taken Direct, without an amp. I do not know if chorus is done in realtime, or added at mix...
+mark schomaker Thank you for the response. yes i think i should improve my technique but still i believe the Casio Privia 160 is a bit too hard. Again, nice seing a supertramp with a real wurly. yes! i think thats how the recorded. live however i think they must have used an amp and mic'ed it
Verywell played! The sound is amazing, I have a Mark II Rhodes and I've always liked the sound of the Rhodes more but right now I just find they are two great e.Pianos.y I love Supertramp and this intro is one of my favorites. A question, how do you find the keyboard compared to a Rhodes. Is that just different, better, or .... Thanks and regards I.
Yes, I can imagine that the keys are faster and lighter (agile?) Thank you for your opinion. I find that very interesting. (sorry, my spanish is better :-)
Perfect, nothing to add .... !! What have you done to modernize the 200A amp? I have one at home but the amp is original and the sound is not great ....
Well, the onboard amp I recapped and put new FET transistors on the amps output. There is also a new preamp with modern transistors and caps. in this video, you are hearing a little bit of the onboard amp and speakers, but mostly the little Princeton Reverb that I repackaged and put in a piggyback cabinet with a 12 inch speaker. The "perfect" outboard amp for this piano....
@@markschomaker3053 thanks for the info, it's not easy to check the electronics of the amp .... I have already replaced a few caps in the past but it has not improved the sound which lacks clarity and brilliance . On the other hand, my 200A no longer has a metal cover which covers all of the reeds ..... I will perhaps invest in a replacement kit.
@@roazhonbreizh The biggest improvement came from replacing the Preamp. You can buy them fully assembled from Vintage Vibe. They also make a solid state Amp Kit. The Hum Cover is pretty essential. It goes a long way to quieting the piano, especially when you crank it up. Replacing the onboard speaker set will help you out too. Good Luck!!
