Great review of a great song. The perfect song that demonstrates not only great dynamics, but also the clever crafting of tension and release in a deceptively simple pop song.

"Dreamer" was the main single taken from the "Crime of the Century" album so you probably heard it on the radio a few times.

@@SightAfterDark I liked the bit where you looked at each other and both acknowledged and nearly mouthed "Heard it before". It's a fine catchy song, where prog morphs into pop to produce radio for the ages. Call and response is exactly right: If I could see something/You can see anything you want Boy! ... and was pleased that you pointed to the left/right switcheroo.

Saw them live on their closing tour- brilliant! They pole- vaulted from a superior band to one of the all- time greats, imo. Funnily enough the best Supertramp song never got released by them- it came out on Roger Hodgson's album originally called Jai Jai, then re-released as Hai Hai (name of both album and song). btw, until I can see the young lady's first name written, I hear "seafood"... hey, I'm old- what can I tell you. Greetings from Canada- be safe.... seafood graffiti... AND the young sir too.

I didn't hear "seafood" like that other Canajun old fart who was probably just hungry after hibernating all winter and needing to fatten up fast on anything in the river... I don't remember what I heard now. what was the question again? I forgot what we were talking about..... oh well... what's the next song? anyone else feel like fish and chips for dinner tonight?

Thanks for the info Michael, I didn't know, unlike various organ brands beside Hammond, such as Lowrey, I think Wurlitzer, Farfisa, I usually think Rhodes when I think electric piano. Cheers.

there was a guy in my high school who told me his fav song off Crime of the Century was Dreamer..... I liked Bloody Well Right more..... I still think I'm Bloody Well Right. for the rest of the school year.... every time I ever heard him say something.... I'd respond by saying, "well, can you put your hands in your head? oh no." I even got other students to singalong with me after the taunting..... "right, right, you're bloody well, right." if I ever see him again, he's gonna get it again too ha ha.... muah ha ha.

I had the fortune to see them in 79. It was one of my top 10 concerts for sure. I really miss those days. I think the ticket was $8.00.

Forever and a day there has been a debate which guy sings the best and leads the best Tramp songs.....very,very close but I like Roger . Both are better though ,in the same song !

these darn kids today are always lifting the record needles off their vinyls before the next song comes on their turntables instead of hearing the whole 33" album spin thru. what do you mean they don't even have a clue what I said?

@@JuandeFucaU - there was a certain gratification to listen to an album in its entirety, huh? They went through great pains to determine the ebb and flow of the tracks, what song would lead into the next and how, and what song would be fist on each side as well as the final cut. There was a real ritual in getting up to flip over the vinyl to start side 2. I’m guessing these guys will take the time to listen all the way through without interruption sometime.

It was grade eight when I got into this album, 1978, a few years after it came out. Everybody was into it and we would walk around blasting it at recess we thought we were so cool lol. I remember listening to it over and over and over again in the dark in those days!

SUPERTRAMP, "DREAMER". THIS WHOLE ALBUM IS ONE WITH WORLD. WHAT I REALLY FOUND INTERESTING IS ALL OF THESE TUNES WOULD OF FIT RIGHT IN, WITH THE BREAKFAST IN AMERICA ALBUM WHICH CAME OUT I THINK WAS 6 YEARS LATER...

Hard to believe that this album, Crime of the Century, was released in September of 1974, 47 yrs ago this month. Seems like yesterday I was playing it on my cassette deck in the car. Great album, for sure one of my favorites along with breakfast in America.

Yes.The signature driving sound in Dreamer is Roger's Wurlitzer electric piano. It sounds as if he had added a lot of quality chorus to the tone.

Great comment about being keyboard driven. Roger Hodgson has a very percussive keyboard style.

Their vocals tend to replace rythum guitar and guitar solos. Supertramp used a lot of keyboard sounds as the heavy lifters in their music.

Great review. I have been listening to this album since it was first released and have had it in all it's different formats. It is an album - like all their albums - that should be listened to from start to finish, lights out and headphones on. I'm happy you guys like the song, it would have been painful for me if you hadn't (!).

"Can you put your head in your hands" "Can you put your hands in your head". Clever rewording. That key board is playing those driving hythmic cords and just a couple of times this higher pitched note gets thrown in. And I don't know if it's the same keyboardist doing it, or the sevond guy,, but there are these tasteful bits of brain candy inserted so sporadically that its still interesting for you, during listen number 12.

Right as your get into the song or have been grooving for a bit, I think the song is WAY to short for what it brings to the table in tempo, rhythem, lyrics. This could have been built up for about 2 or 3 minutes. OR at least that's my wish.

Nah Michael, I really dug this one! I work long hours on Sundays before we film, so was probably sleepy or hungry because I head to filming straight after work w no break-but Dreamer was a jam!
