Came out when I was in middle school and everybody got the album. We played it at parties I played alone in the dark we heard it on the radio we heard it everywhere! The whole album was amazing. IS amazing.
Crime Of The Century is my favorite Supertramp album, more than Breakfast In America. It is more earthy and intimate, some of the songs are a real gut punch. "School" is a good example.
The songs duel it out on Crime of the Century. Actually, Rick created 4.5 songs to 3.5 for Roger. On the next album, they follow that dueling format for just the first side. The second side of Crisis has great songs, but they don't playfully duel it out.
Yeah it was the CRIME OF THE CENTURY! a real FOOL'S OVERTURE! It was A CRISIS - WHAT CRISIS? Love all those albums and the rest as well. CD and UHQR vinyl as well. Still play all them all day long.
Great reaction Biz, good to hear you are listening to SUPERTRAMP. Fantastic band. The only negative is that's it a pity it was the live version you reacted to. The studio version is much much better, hopefully you'll get to listen to it one day.
I usually check live versions out *second* after I hear the way the band originally conceived of the song in the studio. But that's me, and you're you.
Went to a Supertramp concert at cap center in Maryland with my HS girlfriend . We got there late and she said shoot they already started playing ,as we were at the entrance and couldn't see the stage. Me wanting to impress with my concert knowledge said "no that's just the capital center playing supertramp music till they start" It's too exact sounding like their albums . Bands in concert can't duplicate albums that closely live. As we entered the arena sure enough it was ST playing . She gave me that your so full of $h@+ look. Haha Great concert.
Please, please, please listen to the studio version from the Crime of the Century album. You won't regret it. The whole album is a masterpiece! I just stumbled on your channel. Can't wait to see what else you have. God Bless!
You're right, Biz, that this song is a lot like "Logical Song" (and Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in the Wall Pt II") in criticizing the conformity forced on kids by schools, but this song is just the opening track of a concept album...it's the first chapter and the following songs take it further. "Bloody Well Right" is the very next song, and a very cool one; give it a listen!
You got it Man. "School" was the warning, "The Logical Song" was the right cross to the face, because not enough of society was listening, and caring about society destroying their individualism.
I love when you do Supertramp! You love when you do Supertramp! So much fun! There is so much to listen to...I would say you should do 'Bloody Well Right' or 'Child of Vision'. So many to choose from and they're all great. This was fantastic! Watching you dig it so much is so good!
First saw Supertramp in ‘76. Still one of the best live shows I’ve ever seen (and there’s tough competition… Zappa, Pink Floyd, Stevie Wonder, The Who, ELP, Gong, Ray Charles with the Rev. Al Green, David Bowie, the Tubes, Tom Waits, Bob Marley and the Wailers, Weather Report, Neil Young, Chick Corea, Deep Purple, War, Earth, Window and Fire, Chicago, Crosby, Stills and Nash, P Funk, Bob Dylan, The Alan Parsons Project, The Fifth Dimension, Yes, Genesis, Robin Trower, King Sunny Ade, the Dead, the Eagles, Elton John, Stanley Clarke, Buddy Guy, Billy Cobham, George Duke, Dave Brubeck 5, Steely Dan, Jorma Kaukonen, Steve Miller, Blue Magic, ELO, the Moody Blues, Rush, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGee, Jethro Tull, Kansas, Aerosmith, Heart, Bad Company, Queen, Alice Cooper, Herbie Hancock, ELO, BTO, Fleetwood Mac, George Straight, Seals and Crofts, Grand Funk, Ronnie Laws, Tony Joe White, Peter Paul and Mary, Joe Walsh, the Doobie Brothers, Jimmy Cliff and and Third World, Bêla Fleck and the Flecktones, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, America, Elvis Costello, Asia, Return to Forever, Peter Gabriel, the Dukes of September, Buddy Miles, Stanley Jorden, Corrine Bailey Rae, Jefferson Starship, Rick Wakeman, Alice Cooper, Linda Ronstadt… I haven’t even begun to dig into classical artists( Rostrapovitch, Yo Yo Ma, Galway, the Chinese symphony orchestra, the Russian symphony orchestra…) Marcel Marceau… and MANY, MANY more…… Just saying… Supertramp was special!
One of the best albums ever. On par with Pink Floyd. Listen to the whole LP. Crime Of The Century. Also, seen them about 79 or so. One of the best sounding concerts in my life. The other ones, YES, Jethro Tull, see a pattern. British=better. Hm.
They did some jam sessions with guys from Floyd . A lot of similarities . The personality clashes ? The main guys in both bands were at each other's throats . Hence both bands ended too early. .The Rudy train station noise sounds very pink .And the way the songs take a while to get full head of steam but when they did wow.kind of the stairway slow start wild ending trademark.
When you listen to this and Pink Floyd’s Another Brick In The Wall you realize education has been crappy for a long time. Check out John Lennon’s Working Class Hero it’s kinda the same vein.
Great choice, Brother Biz! Check out their song, "Rudy," or "Loverboy" next if you want a deep cut, otherwise your next song should be "Take the Long Way Home." KEEP ON TRUCKIN' MAN
They had a lot of great songs that start out mellow and then gradually put you on a rocket . Rudy is one example. I would hear a Supertramp song on the car radio which they make you turn the volume up and up then wait for the song to end before you got out of your car. Forgetting to turn the volume down the next day when you got into your car . The radio would blast you through the roof from the Supertramp volume the day before. Those were the days.
The songs in the "Crime Of The Century" are connected, is like telling a history and that's the intro for the all album. The next song is like a reply to "School"; "Bloody Well Right". I got always the chills when I listen to the all album! For me, one of the better ever! For me, off course. Great content men! Peace!
Wow, thanks for this reaction/review...First time hearing the live version of this...I loved it when it dropped on vinyl...The song received lots of play on FM radio back in the day...
Damn... DEFINITELY SHOULD HAVE DONE - Studio Album Crime of the Century Maybe you can do that as a follow up? And then do the album title track (NOT LIVE)
The twist at the end was they gotcha. Just like Johnny Too Good, now YOU'RE coming along. They get us all. LOL That's my take on it Btw, as awesome as Supertramp is, this is their best song. Well, it's MY favorite anyway. So thankful the radio would hardly play it. They run everything into the ground.
Goddammit, not a live version! I can’t tell you how disappointed I am. This just sucks all of the energy out of it. The piano is so freaking WEAK in this…. I’m sorry, this really sucks compared to the studio version, and I’m a huge Supertramp fan. If you don’t believe me, I challenge you to react to the REAL version.
It doesn't suck. Its a great unofficial live version which just goes to show how good they were live. Yes it might not be as good as the studio version but lets be frank what is? The piano is not weak, the recording is weak. Don't call yourself a Supertramp fan if you can tell the difference between a great performance and a poor unofficial recording! Social media makes people say unwise and extreme things.
The reason that The Logical Song and School cover similar ground is that both were written by Roger Hodgeson. Although earlier credits also added Rick Davies, that had been a gentleman's agreement between them that all songs would be co-credited no matter who wrote them. But after Roger Hodgeson left Supertramp, the split became ugly, and the resulting settlement caused the correct songwriting credit for each song to be listed, and it turned out that Roger Hodgeson wrote virtually all of Supertramp's biggest hits...School, Give a Little Bit, Dreamer, The Logical Song, Breakfast in America, and Take the Long Way Home.
@@nandlalsall8244 I bet to differ. They are great songs, but I think that Fool's Overture, for example is one of the greatest songs that Supertramp recorded. The ones you mention are good, but not, I think the greatest. But that is my own personal opinion.
You should always do the studio version for these guys for the full pristine production which is superior among bands. Also stopping a song 3/4 away through for a lengthy breakdown of the lyrics is never a good thing. You lose the whole vibe and build up to the climax. ah
Superb song ... together with the Logical Song it teaches you so much about real life and the meaning of it. Get out of the rat race and live your life
Crime of the century should be listened to beginning to end. Rudy and the title track are my favorites. This is not dance music which are basically all the same. This is music that exercises the brain like most the music you find on my rarely.never heard on radio list if you wish to experiment. I really don't like radio music the songs are short I'll listen to anything once that is longer than 8 minutes. Think about who want to hear a long bad or boring song.
Yeah. Indoctrination. Similar subject to Pink Floyd- Another Brick In The Wall. Also The Smiths- The Headmaster Ritual. They are about the austere strict British schools that are supposed turn them into upper class limeys. Oops that was a slur lol :P
My first post ever and Im a big fan Biz.Oh man...I waited for you to do this song and you didnt do the the studio version. No comparison. This live version is very weak. The studio version is a Classic. Please do the studio version.
