Thanks Rob. I didn’t think of using an ultra sonic cleaner. If one has to submerge the part, it wouldn’t be suitable. I’ve done that in the past using Green Gunk, and it generates pockets of rust in hard to get places. Also, there’s the wooden handle. Flash rust is a reason why I don’t use any lubricant when I’m using the abrasive.
You've made me wonder if I should give my Stanley 46 a going over. I know for definite that the skate soles aren't perfectly true or co-planer. Maybe when I've got more time, eh...
Yes! It’s finding the time, isn’t it? Thank you for watching. Even if you just assembled your 46 and ran the soles over some abrasive, it would make a wee difference. Fifteen minutes maybe?
This makes me think that my Stanley 45 needs some tinkering. I use mine all the time for grooves, rabbets, dadoes, and mouldings. Sure a router is fast and easier but i prefer the handmade.
An electric router is definitely faster if you’re doing multiple items, but they have their set up time too. Also the noise, the dust, the missing fingertips. At best, an electric router will give a medium finish. You’ll still need a further step of some kind to get a fine finish.
