Set Up: Use tables, chairs, or other objects of similar height to create a barrier/net across the middle of the play area. Barrier/net should be low, something most people could get over pretty easily. You will also need a ball that is soft and bouncy. Separate players into two even teams, one on each side of the barrier.
How to play: You begin by having a player from one team serve the ball to the other side. Players on both sides then continue to hit the ball back and forth across the barrier until someone scores. Whichever team scores gets to serve next.
Serving:
Serving is just like Volleyball. Teams must rotate servers each time they serve.
A player serves by standing in a designated area and hitting the ball to the other team’s side of the play area.
If a player serves but fails to hit the ball over the barrier to the other team’s side (this is called a Failed Serve), then they get a redo. You can get two redos. If you fail all 3 serves, the ball switches sides and the other team gets to serve it. No points are awarded to either team when this happens.
Other players who are not serving cannot help the ball over the barrier off a serve. The server needs to get the ball over the barrier on their own. Otherwise it is a failed serve.
Scoring:
A team scores points in one of two ways. The first way is if the ball bounces on the floor of the opposing team’s side 3 times without switching sides
The main goal of the game is to get the ball to bounce on the floor of the opposing team’s side 3 times WITHOUT switching sides. So for example, if Team A hits the ball onto Team B’s side of the play area, and it bounces on the floor twice and then someone hits it back to Team A’s side, then the bounces reset. The only thing that resets the bounces is switching sides or a player from the other team hitting the ball. So if the ball bounces on my side twice and then I hit it to a teammate, and then my teammate hits it back my way but it bounces on the floor before reaching me, then that counts as the third bounce. Players on the same team hitting the ball doesn’t reset it. The ball hitting walls or barriers doesn’t reset it. The bounces only reset if the ball goes over the barrier or if a player on the other team touches the ball.
Second way a team can score points is if a player on the opposing team hits the ball twice in a row without another player touching the ball. This is called a Double Hit. So if Player A hits the ball in the air and then when it comes back down, Player A is the first person to touch it, then that counts as a double hit. If a player touches a ball, they can only touch it again after another player has touched it. If a double hit happens on Team A, Team B scores.
A few other things to know:
You are allowed to hit the ball with any part of your body. This also means that if the ball touches any part of your body, even if it wasn’t intentional, that counts as a hit. So be careful not to double hit.
The ball stays in play unless there is a failed serve or someone scores. This means that there is no out of bounds and the ball stays in play even after bouncing off walls, barriers or other objects.
This is not Volleyball, therefore, do not assume something is required or against the rules simply because that’s how it works in Volleyball.
if a player who is currently not playing intentionally hits the ball, that counts as an interference and the round must be reset.
Players are allowed to reach over the barrier to hit the ball
There is no maximum number of hits a team is allowed before switching sides. As long as nobody double hits and the ball doesn’t bounce on the floor 3 times, a team can hit the ball back and forth among them as many times as they want.
