Hi Jessica! You are so much more organized than I could ever be! I do my pantry like you do...cans together, etc. My pantry is not all that big, but I don't live in Alaska...lol! All my things are done in dozens...like 10 or 12 of each. I love that you and your Mom go shopping together. I lost my Mom in 2008, and I miss her every day. Give your Mom a big hug from me, just because!!!! You are so fierce and focused!! Big hugs and many blessings, sweet one!
I just stock my favorites. I figure if there is a tornado, earthquake or bad ice storm I'm going to want favorites. It's the little things that make me happiest. Grilled cheese and tomato soup, biscuits and gravy, quesadilla jalisco, banana bread, blueberry bread, apple or cinnamon danish, etc. I have all the ingredients in stock. Lol.
Good choice! I couldn’t agree more. Like simply have hot chocolate or a favorite treat that eases the mind! You are on the right track in my opinion fir sure!
Another way to build a pantry and what's worked best for me is to write things on the shopping list as they're used. Ex: made tuna noodle so I put Mac and cheese, tuna, and can of peas on the list. To build the pantry I'll get 2 or 3 or 4 instead of just 1 to replace it. I know we'll eat it because we already have! A couple things are required for this though 1. Cook (pretty much) from scratch 2. Cook with shelf stable items as much as possible. Just a different spin on things that I don't find talked about
Great idea. We spent few weeks everyday. giving to our grand boys school daily giving box. We had pasta & bread fir supper so We donated pasta , sauce, bread kits. We had soup so we donated soup and crackers, we had rice and beans so we donated rice and beans kits. Made us think meals are important. So we do 4 basic meals a week then 2 more complicated lol . So we remember those basics to donate and buy and how many we need to do those meals and donations. Such a good way to remember your meal supplies.
once a month we give to a local churchs food pantry. we have been very blessed so we like to give to them so they can bless others. We send them food for three meals a day for at least a week. i try and get as many fresh items as i can and always add some treats so the children (and the parents too) can have something special.
That's a great idea! I love that. I got some soups that are like princess or kids shapes. Nothing like a sick child that needs to eat. Simone said to make birthday boxes for parents. Like a pan a cake mix birthday candles. I love all the ideas you all come up with. Nothing like thinking of helping a parent brighten a child’s day with a treat. Thank you so much for what you do.
I received my first bulk beans and rice today. I’m just starting but I’ve been watching many people and taking advice that pertains to me. I’m excited to get the bags into the freezer and package them for long term storage. Thank you so much for being detailed in your advice.
Sue...just a friendly hint. Before you buy any more rice and beans, round out your long-term storage with pasta, flour, yeast, cornmeal, salt, sugar, instant potatoes, oats, and fats like olive oil, avocado oil, and coconut oil...and butter if you can store it in your freezer...I'm just thinking aloud. You know what your family will eat and what you already have on hand The goal is, though, is to go beyond rice and beans...and to have seasoning/salt to cook your foods with. Also...curious...what varieties of beans (and rice) did you buy? You don't want to only have 50 lbs of pinto beans, for example, and do diversify with several varieties, and the same with rice. You want to have a way to "doctor" up your beans so they don't taste the same way every time you eat them. That will get boring REALLY quick!!!
My husband's been out of work for 9weeks, and I'm unable to work, so having a well stocked canned pantry has been a life savor for our family of 4. Its desperately in need of a restock, but our budget is barley able to keep fresh milk for the kids in the home. And living in California means prices are ridiculously high. Keeping a reserve of even a few months of foods you eat is so important, and not just for major disaster situations, anything can happen to anyone. Thank you for sharing your stock! And a very big thanks to sharing the love and donating to your local food drives. Every can counts!
You are a rock star! A woman who prepared for the worst and is able to see her hard work being put to use. I’m so proud of you! I’m also so sorry you are struggling I’m keeping you in my thoughts!
Thank you so much for braking things down. Stocking up when your not used to the thought process is a challenge. I’m grateful for your encouragement and inspiration 😇
Your thought process is "Spot on"! ! ! Again, I really enjoy seeing your basement stock of foods. What a pantry! I do not really have a pantry anymore, as I am in a rental. So, I have shelf units that my son built me.....one of those is in the sliding door closet, as you come into the house.......then another is in my room, and that one holds my personal tools, empty canning jars, lanterns for emergency use...things of that sort. Then, I have a double door unit, that holds some canned goods. Actually 2 of them, but a smaller one is in the kitchen area., and it is my go-to pantry. Sounds confusing, I know, but, its actually quite organized. I miss the basement, that I had when all my children were younger. I had the freezers down there, and many shelf units. I did can back then, as I had quite a large garden. It is very rewarding to open a jar of pickles, or string beans, knowing that you canned them yourself. I used to go upstate Maine, and buy 100 lbs of potatoes. That was good, for my family of 11. Now, there is just me, and one of my daughters that lives with me. She is 54 and has fibromyalgia quite badly. It seems like we take turns not feeling well. Anyhow......when my children were little, I would bake 6 loaves of bread at a time....that recipe was wonderful! Thanks so much for taking us down in your basement supplies. I really enjoy it so very, very much. PS I have some SPAM in my absolute EMERGENCY pile of thing.....I am not really a fan, but with eggs, I can tolerate it! Have a great week, Bev in Maine
I love hearing from you Bev. You have had such an amazing life and I love the stories. We are at different points but clearly a same mind set! Thank you for always showing such support!
My daughter loves those little mini jams and things as well as a Christmas memory. I got her the 24 days of bonna mamas jams one year and she loved it! The jars are so cute.
In Arizona, we have Fry's but haven't experienced any shortage of tomatoes. In fact, I have so many I've donated a bunch. The shelves are full at our local Fry's. Only a very few items I can't find. An example is Best Food's Mayo. I like buying the small jars because there are just the 2 of us and we don't use mayo very often. I ended up having to settle for a large jar. But better to have some than none. Love your Costco hauls!!
That is awesome! I love that thought. It’s crazy here with tomatoes! And they are such a staple in my house. And honestly I don’t want to have to pay an arm and leg.
I think very similarly to the way you organized your pantry, it makes sense to me. It's always interesting to see what's happening in different areas and how much things cost or what is in short supply. You were sure right about the temperature in Dallas being cold. I had to pick the last of my tomatoes before our first freeze a couple of days ago. So there's that, tomatoes in November, crazy. I appreciate your explanation about the whys, etc of the reason you do things. You throw out a lot of tips and tricks along the way that are helpful. Thanks for sharing
So nice of you to drop in. It’s a slow process but someday I’ll be satisfied then someone will eat something. Oh man it’s never ending. Thanks for watching.
You just gave me great ideas of things I did not think of. Thanks. I think my OCD kicks in when I organize my pantry, it’s all in alphabetical order, yes I know crazy.
you can freeze crm chs n sour cream u can store it upside down before its open n you'll get longer time iknow sounds weird we did it in our resturant we were told by the vender n my grandma used to store it upside down til opened
You are so organized! That’s great! I was really able to follow you really well. I’m so glad you are feeling better, but don’t get to frisky!! Lol! I really love your videos! Ty for taking the time and patience to share them!
I have had something in my thoughts to buy, but for the past few days it has alluded me! Bingo.. you have it!! The can rollers/rotators. I could hug you!! The day is getting long here, have taken my fall things down and packed for storage. I have the opportunity to have a friend come and put up our tree in the morning. Will be out of town for Thanksgiving and we can live incognito til Black Friday!! Wow, your yard looks great! You can tell that a lot of work happened there! Until we visit, hugs to all and blessings. ❤ Momma G
My brain apparently works a lot like yours. My cold room is down there’s in a 8x8 room. It holds at fridge temperatures most of the winter. So I keep cans, rice, beans and pastas and my home canning, then fresh fruits and veg down there. So similar to yours. Great video Jessica 🇨🇦💕
Same I'm a condiment person got more condiments then anything else. Wish we could share pics in the comments lol no shame in having too many. I like sauces and such lol
We had to buy another fridge to put the condiments, water, juices, kids snacks and drinks, alcohol, beer and soda, teas. we had no room for reg stuff. I hear ya we are super fresh with cold drinks and lots of sauces.
I am in need of reorganizing my pantry. I will have to think if I want to try a different method of organization. Thank you for your overview of your pantry organization. Here in east central Oklahoma, we are having our first snow of the season today!!! It's 34 degrees, but the snow is not sticking very much yet. Have a great week, and many blessings!!
I’m laughing because I’m warmer in Alaska. How does that even happen. Goes to show these thoughts and practices can for sure be shared! Stay warm my friend.
Please do a video scanning your entire pantry….I see all the black tubs with yellow tops. I wish I had led a different life when I was younger. Living vicariously through you.
With the cold weather moving in we are better about putting complete meal items in our pantry. We look in the freezer to see what is oldest & pick up the side foods. I always watch your videos when my daughter is watching TV with me hoping to motive her into weekly meal planning & stocking. We are so different- and that’s okay-- she’s a procrastinator & I think everything should be done last week. I’ve had to change since I’m dependent on her to do everything! 😄. Once she lets me know what is oldest in the freeze, she likes help with getting the list made for sides! Aw Such is Life! Thank you for all of your tips on setting up a long term pantry! Blessings! 💜
Fred Meyer is a Kroger family store. :) I’m so happy your feeling better. Thank you for sharing how to build a pantry from the ground up. Absolutely love every signal video you post.
Fred Meyer is an affiliate of Kroger to us in the lower 48. I love your channel. Thank you for sharing your content and life with us. Praying for you , hope you feel well soon.
Got to love the condiments ❤️❤️❤️ Have been slowly building a stock pantry and I totally agree with your ethos on food security 👍👍👍 Tins I find are the best for donating and pasta. Jessica always enjoy your videos 👏👏👏👏👏👏 Blessings to and wishing you good health Love from the UK x
What a great video... your pantry has come such a long way! I just picked up my first pressure canner and am excited to start putting up more. I also have more than a few varieties of mustard..lol. keep the videos coming!! Take good care Jess... was nice to see your mom too! Blessings to you all 😀
WOWIE Aaron sure is putting his new toy to use! the transformation of the driveway and all around the house looks amazing!!! YAY Aaron! when you mentioned not finding split pea soup lately it made me wonder if you've ever tried the Ball/Bernardin recipe?? it's delish and I happen to have it on pretty good authority that you have a pretty good stash of split peas 🤣 ... the glass of course isn't great to take camping etc but you can just empty the jar into something else to go! just a thought but we sure love that homemade home canned version! ❤
You are so sweet. He did do such a good job. I do need to just can it myself. I like the Pre-canned fir simple reason. You are right I just decided I’ll do it myself!
I did good last week and spent 60 on groceries but some of that was to replenish the pantry with canned veggies going on sale. We’ve got a new refrigerator coming Wednesday if the storm holds off so the November challenge has been a great motivator to work with what we have.
Stale water fix to “freshen it up.” When it comes out of the faucet, it usually has some air in it. It’s sounds too easy, but if you just take two glasses. Put water in one glass and pour it back and forth between the two glasses, you put some of that air back in it. It makes a difference. It seems silly, too easy and like it wouldn’t make that big of a difference, but it does. 😊
I organize mine by type...so pasta & sauces together, baking together, Mexican ingredients together, Chinese ingredients together. It works better for me and is how I categorize my meal types. I have about 100 ingredients on hand and have lots of them. I just try to streamline it all. I don't make a recipe that has a one off ingredient to keep costs down.
See that is such a great thought. Thank you for sharing it shows we can all build a pantry and does not all need to look the same. Just do what works for you. I love this!!!
@@modernhomesteadalaska aa of now, I've only tried 2 variations of Madagascar beans. I'm hoping to expand my selection and experiment over the next year. I found a vanilla bean co-op that is neat to order and learn from.
A lot of times I will buy the big bags of frozen veggies for cheaper and then can them into pints or quarts to save on freeze space. I'm in Atlantic Canada and a lot of prices are similar to yours in Alaska
We grew up as ketchup dipping kids, so now I dip in many different condiments, and at 61, I doubt that I will change. I have over 12 bottles of assorted condiments/sauces in the refrigerator, and that doesn't include the items that I can as well.
Grab those slices peaches! There are none in any Costco in my area (New York City and Westchester, NY). I'm sorry that I didn't pick up more the last time I saw them (mid summer). 😥😥😥
If the milk is so much cheaper at Costco, would you consider buying it there and freezing it? I freeze milk all the time and it tastes just as good as the day it was bought.
Perfect idea! I have or try to keep 6 gallons in the freezer. And you are 100% right it’s just the same we have frozen milk for years. And yes I should start just getting the month worth and freezing it. But also keeping the 6 extras for emergency. Sort of rotate through better! Great point. Has me thinking now.
Thank you I got them different places I just tell others to look at can rollers on Amazon. And you can decide based on the space. The have singles and doubles and so on. Thank you for watching
I stock by ingredients, not by meal. Perish the thought of not having flexibility!!! I stock for a year-plus for myself (it's just me). I have probably three years worth of pasta (and just bought 20 pounds again last week)...but I kept getting good deals on it. I can't pass up a good deal! I'll be sharing with my daughter, other family, and with the needy.
I like that. I stock items not meals. Well some exceptions, like a few Asian meals or some we make 1 or 2 times a year that require a few specific things. I’m with you on buying pasta. I do however need way more!
I find it quite difficult to built my pantry but i'm working on it, as prices go up like crazy here in france. I try to use the things i bought and that we don't really like in the challenge and beginning of december i promised to my self to re-organise the whole place ( 2.50 meters x 1.50 meters ). Thanks for all your help. Hugs from france
I organize my pantry by like items, but I think that is because I scratch cook all meals, and I use a variety of different things in each dish. Most of my vegetables we raise, and a little of our fruit. Otherwise I buy fresh, locally if possible and can them myself.
Watching this 12/2022 from Michigan. We did 2 shopping trips to Meijer this week, Meijer had canned goods 39 cents a can. We stocked up enough for a year. I am a canner, but I can't can at that price these days.
Yep that's what my family always does. Lived in Minnesota for years no walmart yet in those days. You bulk up for those crock pots, family Giving, church donate, meat fir meat raffle giveaways, and all that baking & jamming. We us the big tote method 5 totes for all those tomato cans so many kinds lately. 1 corn, 1 fruits 1, chili type beans 3 totes, 2 more just miscellaneous cans. About 8 totes things like cereal, oatmeal, scallop & dry potatoes, noodles, pasta, rice, beans, all that baking stuff. We would be like better to fill in August then tiny loads on snowmobiles in nov.. ya never know when you need to bug out for fires, storms, floods those totes are handy. Ans easy to donate we buy dated items year round but winter is our crock pot and baking time. We fill those totes. Keep it clean and tidy
@@modernhomesteadalaska yep feed the neighbors mentality it's rough in frozen states. Keep them bins full 2 months before everyone peak panic buys - when the snow gets nippy those prices go up & demand & low inventory. Basic economics. We purge the bins on canned tomatoes & veg & beans in June - to donations. And fill them June July August September bit of Oct. Then watch the hoarders buy high...lol.. we know everything we buy has a place. Either eating, giving, or donation to churches, city blessing boxes, schools. We see you Buy that extra. Bless you its so important to those needing it. I feel it's the best thing we do. Im a donation cans hoarder in off peak times to give when it's so important. Those totes have saved us thru disasters I can pull up with my bbq and full tote of veg. We get to cooking or giving. Ive been known to do both. Spring ice storm Elect outage well that's just a bbq for the city my freezer food is getting put onto my smokers and I'm feeding linemen and neighbors. We pull out totes to donate hot sides. You never know who God sends you.
Exactly!! Lol you made me smile. They just love that spam! But I can’t do it with all the condiments myself! But I love to see them smile! Do I buy all those little things.
Often times we don't realize the amt of people shopping at your town 60k can mean divided by 5 store sources. Canned tomatoes are often bought in bulk August - Feb peak buying times And shop both times a day as online and even restaurants are buying in the same stores. Often Costco only has 4 types or less. Those like kroger etc have 6 types with one shelving 150 cans a week. You are competing with 60k households. Buy these things every trip, as the sales are 10 for 10 or 10 for $ 20. One person buys 24 or 48 of each. It's not a shortage according to your stores it's a buying peak time and alaska it's snow falls you panic and buy Staples for weeks
I like the perspective. It makes me feel guilty to buy all of something when I’m only wanting 10-12 of the item. It’s frustrating when you need it but the mind set is to feel bad if you buy all you need. It’s for sure been a mind set shift. Like when I go get milk I should buy just 5 or so cans and stick the item slow but consistently. You gave me something to ponder and an idea to adjust fir sure.
Jennifer I love Tang but I can’t pee when I drink it same thing with Pepsi , I guess I’m strange 😢 we like pickled beets and bean salad. Thank you for sharing ❤🎉❤
Curious where you got your can rollers? (Please say Amazon 🤞) they look like the ones that load from the top front and roll down and around to the front?
Hi Jessica I was Watching another RU-vidr-And Cardboard & things in Bags that Rodents can eat Through I know you know flour get bugs in it 11-15-2022👍🏽👍🏽♥️., I need those Can holder but I do not have much storage space & I do not really like cans I preferred to be frozen
@@modernhomesteadalaska Thank you !! Still Loving your channel , recipes , tips , just seeing your beautiful surroundings ! P.S. Your hair looks cute in a braid and a hat , I prefer watching family channels and women that aren't all dressed up in the kitchen , I find them hilarious walking in heels 👠 and dressed up👗 long fingernails 💅, scared to get a little dirt on them 😂
I never liked to store food. But since the pandemic, that has changed quite a lot. And thanks to you, Jessica, I am slowly but surely building up our pantry. And I like to sort it by categories, like everything in the house I have to store. That's the easiest for me to find the items. Thank you so much for this video and greetings from Switzerland
Flour in canister powder milk in glass jars I can jelly glass jars pasta sauce jars picante sauce glass jars store baking soda powder milk instant potato in these jars
It’s a damed if I do and damed if I don’t situation. I get hate when I share the total. It’s a hard balance to decide what to share and not share. So I try mostly to share what items cost as opposed to what I personally spend
@@modernhomesteadalaska i only asked for comparson to what same amount in detroit area..yes taxes are different and some of your prices are lower so wanted to know total in comparision
Lol we are not canned veggie fans! But we will eat them just a couple times a year. It’s so funny! It’s like a last ditch effort! I do use lots of frozen and fresh ones that we do truly prefer! Thanks for watching anyway! Lol
No spend November?!?? I’m so confused on how you can post all these no spend November videos but then spend $1,000 at Costco in the middle of the month.
This was recorded in October I got very sick and was put on antibiotics and had to go to the hospital twice. So I did this shopping at the very end of October. I then got sicker again. And have struggled to put the stuff away and work on my basement. So I simply struggled to get the video made and put out. I put pressure on myself to not put it out until I could put it away. And I should of done it earlier.
@Dale Drake great point. I set my no spend or no waist full spending month. Like personally we are refusing to buy anything that goes into the freezer for all of December either. Use what we have.
@@modernhomesteadalaska thank you for explain, not that you have to explain yourself. I hope you are putting your health first!! I love watching you and your family’s journey!!!! Be well!!
